I was told, that is is much more rare, for shingles to be contagious and someone to get chicken pox. (even in babies) Sometimes, it does happen. If you have immunity to chicken pox, you baby could have a mild case...because they are still carrying some of your antibodies, from pregnancy. In healthy babies, there are rarely any complications from chicken pox. You can call your Dr. and ask about the exposure. After that, if it looks like your child is developing chicken pox, take him in. Don't worry too much.
You know your baby was exposed, so you can act right away, should they have it.

My husband had shingles a couple of years ago and the doc told him to stay away from pregnant women and kids that hadnt had pox yet. That's all I know.

Its possible. I worked in a nursing home and if you were pregnant or never had chicken pox you could not take care of residents w/ shingles.

Hi A.,

Bug is right. It's possible but unlikely. The key to keeping chicken pox at bay is to have a good immune system. Chicken pox is an airborne virus and very easily transmitted while shingles usually is only passed on through direct contact with open sores.

PS I have know people to contract chicken pox through the vaccine. The vaccine only protects you for about 10 years so the risk of exposure before you are vaccinated again is possible. Usually if chicken pox is actually contracted it gives a permanent immunity.

Our munchkin did!! Terrible 1st X-Mas. 104 degree fever X-Mas EVE My husband was exposed from 2 fellow co-workers. Doc said it's not '"contagious". But it was too much of a coincidence to ignore, Our lil one was 6 months at the time and it was too late to avoid him once we knew. High fever and cranky baby, and Hubby was in the most terrible pain, I always thought it was an "old people thing" he's only 31!!! Our baby girl had the pox EVERYWHERE! Still scars now 2 years later, but faded mostly. So sad, too little to take medication or to immunize!
