Child Hair Loss

Hi! I have a 6 year old daughter. For the past month, whenever I wash her hair, she loses quite a bit of it. Nothing major, but concerning because this is not the norm for her. She has no bald spots and it doesn't appear thin. It just seems to be when it is washed, I dry it with a towel and run my fingers through it to get all of the loose hairs or they stick to her all over her back and shoulders. I wash her hair every other day or two. About 3 times a week. Has anyone experienced this with their child? Thank you in advance! ;-)

What can I do next?

Yes, this happened to my daughter and to a friend's daughter not long before. Did your daughter have an extended illness about three months before this? Not necessarily a serious illness - my girl had a nasty flu bug for about 10 days. My friend's child had something else. An extended illness somehow interrupts the hair growth cycle, so you will see a lot of hair falling out about 3-4 months after the illness. It's nothing to worry about. It grows back in.
If she didn't have an illness, I'd check with her doctor. I have no idea what else would cause that, but I bet it's not serious.

Every person loses an average of 100 strands of hair per day. This sounds totally normal. I've got really long hair and I shed constantly (burn through a lot of vacuums too!)... My hair is more noticeable after showering or brushing just because it's so long, and darker than my kids super blonde hair.

It happened to my cousins kid and it ended up she was pulling it out (enough to dislodge the hair but not pull it out completely..) I'd def ask a doctor about it!

I went through this at about age 8. And my hair did get thin for awhile. My mom took me to the doctor, and he could find nothing wrong. My doc said he had seen this before, and that my hair would come back in coarser and possibly curlier. And that's exactly what happened. The whole process took place over about half a year.

Since there are medical conditions that can cause hair loss, get her checked out to be sure the hair loss is not an indicator of a more serious problem. But don't panic until there is a cause to. For your daughter, this may just be a part of growing, like it was for me.
