It took me 6 month to begin receiving checks, but at that time it had built up the full ammount due as of the date I filed the claim. I got a lot of back child support. I filed in November and received my check in early May of the next year. Then the father wanted to pay it down and he sent in all the back child support and I got the whole lump sum. I know if you are on welfare you will not receive any more then $50 per month no matter what he pays. And you can't get back support even if you were not on welfare at the time the claim opened.

Call the Orange County Support Services at ###-###-#### and they will give you the status information on your case. You will need your case number. The check should not take more then 10 days to get to you AFTER they have received payment from him. So if his payment due the first of the month, then you may not receive the check until the middle of the month. You may also sign up for a pin that will allow you to call up and review your child support status. The status report will give you the date a payment was sent to you and the balance on the account. You can even review the history of payments over the phone. They will be sending you a monthly statement that indicates how much was paid out for the month. They also offer a direct deposit option. It can take up to three months to get your first check but you can call the worker on your case and bug her/him. Sometimes that makes things go a little faster don't be afraid to call for clarification on any of you questions. If they give you a hard time ask to speak to the supervisor because they are supposed to be accomidating and this shouldn't be stressful for you. The good news is once the checks start coming you will know when you can count on the money monthly and pay bills accordingly. I have been through this for several years now and I have learned that sometimes you have to be a pest to get what you have coming stress free. Also remember they get payed to answer your questions and you pay them through taxes.As you can tell I have had to battle in the past but i now realize thier stress is thier stress and not mine. Don't be put off. It is the responsibility of the other parent to help pay and just hang in there.

Yes, call the counselor that you spoke to at the D.A.'s office. They are very slow, I had to wait months and months for my first check, but stay on top of it, they do come through in the end.. Good Luck.

I would call the office. I had a court order for support, and waited and waited and when nothing came, I called and they told me that the father was just supposed to send me the money on his own, which would never happen! I thought that was the whole point of going to court. So I would make sure that they are going to garnish his wages, usually that is the last resort when they don't voluntarily pay.

If it can depend which county is handling it as well. I get child support for my oldest daughter (now 10) and went through San Diego. It took like 12 months to get everything finally done.. and dont expect the check to be there on the first. Mine comes on all different days of the month.. changing from month to month.. with garnishment it still takes a bit to get here.. Just be patient and make sure to check in with the office if you have any concerns. They will tell you exactly what you need or what the delay is. Good Luck!

Just wanted to say good luck dealing with the DA's office! My husband won an order 2yrs ago to receive child support from his ex-wife - they still haven't called him nor have they given him any updates on his case!!

We eventually had to resort to a collection agency WWW.SUPPORTKIDS.COM to help us out. I highly recommend them, even tho his ex refuses to hold any kind of job & we still have yet to see one check from her. They keep us updated 3 times a month and so far they have placed a lien on her SS# so that she'll no longer be able to collect SS, or a receive anything from the IRS. They have also suspended her drivers license.

Hopefully being a mom the DA's office will work more for you, being on the other side with a husband who is the custodial parent they seem to be stuck in the stone ages and refuse to help!!!

it can take a while, it depends on what state. im in CA and it did take a while...in fact he contacted me first to complain of the garnishment a week or two before i got the first check. GL

Being in the same boat, be prepared for checks to come one minute and not the next. He may even quit his job and work 'under the table' or off the books. The his paycheck is zapped before he even gets it, hence why he may quit his job and go 'underground'. In CA , they arrive the week he would get paid,and if he gets paid once a month in the beginning of the month. Does your state offer direct deposit? I just set mine up and it 'pops' up in my account each month.
I know how that check helps, but don't count on it - use it when you get it as a back up.

I actually didn't go through the DA's office. Since we agreed on everything, I didn't have to hire a lawyer, I went with a documentation prep place and when everything was filed, the courts sent me back all the paperwork and a copy of the child support order that I mailed to his employer and I have been getting regular checks now. I am just dreading the day he changes jobs then I would have to figure out how to get the support then. If I didn't do this, I don't know if I would even be seeing a dime for him. I, too, am a single mom but mine is a 6 year old who is having a hard time adjusting to home life without daddy!

Hello M....So, the case with the DA's office. Is this just an "order" to your ex stating he has to pay, or did they actually set up a program to automatically have his employer deduct a specific amount that goes to the DA, then they turn around and send you a check?

I have a situation in N. Cal where we had a "court order"..but that doesn't DO ANYTHING.. I went through the Co. of Alameda family and child support services department, where his employer sends the designated money to them (ex never sees the $$), then they process it and send me a check. There is a turnaround time of maybe two weeks at most.

If you are in any way confused as to what suppose to happen now call the D.A.'s office to clarify it. The withdrawal from his check, if that is what they are doing, will be done as a regular deduction for him per pay period. They usually pool the funds and send your child support in one lump sum each month. Never be shy about asking questions.

I am in your exact same situation. I am a single mom with a five year old girl also. I had my court hearing in August ordering my ex to pay child support but he refused to give me anything. I filed my completed paperwork with DCSS in November the first time. It turned out there was an error in my court orders that had to be corrected. But once I got the completed paperwork into DCSS it still took around a month or so before I started getting any money. I am on speaking terms with my ex-husband and he even called me and told me they had taken money out of his check the day it happened. It took an additional three weeks after that before I recieved my first check from DCSS though. The way it works is his employer sends a check to DCSS. DCSS recieves the check and deposits it. After the check has cleared they then issue me a check and mail it. The inital process is long and frustrating but once you start recieving the checks you can get them on a regular basis.
