Hi everyone, so my 3 1/2 year old boy, has bad ezcema, been about 1 1/2 months that he had bad rash in his skin, different parts of his body, finally i was able to take him to a dermatologist and told me it was that, gave him some creams to put on his affected area and some samples of Aquanil cleanser and DHS clear shampoo to change his routine...well those i've seen them online and are expensive, and the DHS Clear Shampoo made his hair actually smell dirty..yuck! well, I've been trying to call the dermatologists to ask a few questions and see any other brand of soap and shampoo/conditioner he can use besides those....especially that I can buy them anywhere, not having to order it online or special order at the local pharmacy or even use Aveeno baby products. When my kids were babies thats what i used for them because of dry skin and it was great! But I don't know time passed and they were okay...now I guess because of the cold, detergents, etc my son has had this reaction so its time to change.
Anyone can suggest any good products for children with ezcema that I can buy out there or even if Aveeno baby is good to use with his condition??? and also what about laundry detergents good to use too?

Thank you as always I appreciate it!

What can I do next?

Hi N.,
I'm sorry your son is having a problem with ezcema. We all want our kids to be happy and healthy. Here's what I suggest to help him ...

Start from the inside.
Give your children good quality, organic vitamins. To battle ezcema, you might try adding a probiotic, omega 3's and alfalfa. (Flintstone gummies and One-A-Day are NOT good quality, organic vitamins.)

Use non-toxic, green cleaning products.
Clorox, Lysol, Mr. Clean and all the popular, name brand cleaners contain chemicals that are harmful. Have you ever read the warnings on the labels? There are thousands of chemicals in the products we use. Only a very small percentage of them have even been tested for safety. Some moms make their own cleaners from things like vinegar and baking soda, but I prefer a non-toxic, concentrated cleaner. Just 1/4 teaspoon makes a pint of cleaner that works very well. And 2 drops in a pint make a window cleaner as good as - or better - than Windex.

Use safe and gentle personal care products.
Find non-soap body wash, shampoo, creams and lotions with no harmful chemicals, artificial or synthetic fragrances and dyes. They should be natural and organic, hypoallergenic and pH balanced.

Pay attention to what you're eating.
Ideally, eat organic, whole foods without chemicals and pesticides. But, that's not always practical or economical. Eliminate - or at least cut back - on white flour, sugar and processed and packaged foods. Buy apples, broccoli and chicken instead of hot dogs, french fries and Twinkies.

To see the products I recommend, click my name to go to my profile. Then, click the Business tab.

I hope you find the right products for your son - and your whole family. The products I use have made a big difference in my life.

My 3.5yr old has it too.... we use Aquafor and I think it works great without stinging. We also use all Aveeno products... shampoo, bath wash, lotions, ezcema therapy, sunscreens, etc. Everything Aveeno.
We use cortisone only when the others doesn't work during a flare up.
Good luck!

Cetaphil has a great and no expensive wash and body cream. Another good brand is Aquaphor. Aveeno is still good, I used with my daughter how has have eczema since baby.
Some times a product works for a while and you need to change, at least we saw that on our case, we are trying now the new Neosporin Eczema Essentials that comes in a trial set with the body soap, cream and special treatment for itch, so far is good, butu we just stared 2 days ago.
There are times where my daughter doesn't have any patch, then we use the Aveeno conditioners but when she is having dry skin or res patches we don't use any conditioner and sometimes we use the same body soap on her head (this new Neosporin is not bad in the hair).
I also agree with the other moms, if your doctor hasn't send you to the allergist I would ask him to, my daughter eczema got a lot better when we find out the foods that she was allergic to.
Still some times and some things trigger her skin here and there, but we do also have times where her skin is soft and not patches.
PS: I also have find great products on stores like Whole foods or Weigmens, which are those kind of stores with many natural foods and kind of granola? Sorry, I don't know the definition/name for these kind of stores.

Treat from inside out, proper balanced nutrition. Particular supplemental nutritional products can help. My 2 1/2 yr. old grandson has Keratosis Pilaris and eczema, skin has improved immensely in less than 6 months. If you are interested in hearing how, personal message. Information only!

Could be food allergies too, get that checked.

I just saw an ad for some new OTC kid friendly eczema stuff, maybe ask your pharmacist, I can't think of the name!

We use ALL free and clear detergent, sensitive skin soaps, and fragrance free lotions. If push comes to shove, get the pediatrician to give you an RX for Elidel (if that stuff is even still around! It rocks!)

Good luck!

We use Cetaphil (generic kind is fine) to wash my son's skin and hair. Then we put coconut oil all over him. You can get coconut oil at Whole Foods ($7 for a giant tub that will last a long time). It's hard, so you scoop out a chunk and set it in a metal cup inside another cup filled with hot water to soften it up. It also spreads out and rally you need very little of it to cover the whole body.

We also give our son EFA fish oil to help from the inside.

Free and clear detergents for EVERYTHING.

Neutrogena products are very gentle-Aveeno also makes good products-but you have to use medication to stop the reaction-then use gentle products to keep from causing it to flare.

My daughter is almost 4 and has suffered with eczema since she was an infant. We buy fragrance free shampoo and conditioner at Whole Foods. Their 365 brand is very affordable - about $5 for a BIG bottle. We also use Aveeno oatmeal body wash (the adult kind now) but make sure it is fragrance free. We use All Clear or the Costco (Kirkland) brand of fragrance free, dye free laundry detergent and no dryer sheets with her clothes. She wears all cotton clothes and pajamas. We find controlling her environment and what her skin comes in contact with helps a lot. Good luck - I understand how frustrating this can be especially when your little one is itchy all the time!

Let me start by saying, that my son was plagued by a terrible severe case of ezcema at a very early age and we learned through a lot of sleepless nights and misdiagnosis that this was the outcome of his severe food allergies. That is a long story and he had many many food allergies as well as environmental/animals too. Anyway, he is six years old now. He will break out if he comes into contact with envirn. allergens and animals and still has some food allergies. The main point is to make SURE your son has not developed an allergy. USE ALL no dyes-no frags. --remember his bed sheets- no perfumes. Soap --- if not allergic to tree nuts - read all labels-- can use california baby products--- aveeno okay too. Cetaphil wash and lotions and eucerin good. Also, by wary of the prescriptions and the Elidel is a black box warning-- check it out for cancer warnings.....Check out the allergy and asthma websites too for good ideas and products for skin conditions.

I agree with some of the other moms--my son had terrible eczema and it turns out that he has a severe dairy allergy (among other things including peanuts, fish, eggs, sweet potatoes, blueberries...). I can't eat any of his trigger foods because I am breastfeeding and even that tiny amount affects him! So you may want to look at allergens and see if eliminating certain foods helps. Otherwise, babyganics makes a good cream called Bye Bye Dry (I got it at Babies R Us) that has helped with the dryness, but his eczema is pretty much gone now that I have eliminated the foods that caused it. What I did was keep a diary of EVERYTHING he and I ate/drank for a month, as well as symptoms (spitting up, diarrhea, rash, etc.) and then looked for patterns to see what foods were troublesome. Good luck--I hope you figure it out!

Any free and clear detergent. We mostly us ALL from BJs. I used to use Aveeno for years but it really didn't help and did sting because of all the additives. I now use California Baby. I first tried the unscented which was good and then tried the lavendar to check for any kind of reaction and that worked fine too. It is about $20 for the big container but I buy it at buybuybaby and use a 20% off coupon. The entire container will last about 10 months. For creams I use anything Eucerin that is a CREAM and fragrance free. I have used the aquifor as well but like the cream better because it is not as greasy. There are lots of companies out there that dermatologists will recommend but many didn't work for use because they have NUT oils in them and my son is allergic. I do use hydrocortizone creams as well in verying strengths depending on the severity of the flare up but the creams help keep the flare ups in check. Good luck
