My daughter is almost 4 and I desperately need to find her a big girl night light. I am looking to find one that is kind of a lamp that can sit on her bedside table and project stars, butterflys, flowers, something that she can look at on her walls and/or ceiling. I am having a difficult tme for some reason. I do not want a baby crib item, it needs to be for an older child. Any suggestions?

Hi C.,
I just bought a twilight ladybug for my daughter for Christmas. They also have a turtle I think. It looks like a stuffed animal with a hard shell and it displays stars on the wall in three different colors. You can find constellations when the kids get bigger; there's a book to go along with it. My daughter doesn't quite appreciate it yet, but it's pretty neat. Here's a link:

http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Twilight-Lady-Bug-Constellati...

Also, at the store Fireworks (there's one in Bellevue Square and one in Westlake) they have a lantern that spins and projects different pictures on the wall. They are spendy, about $70, but if you're looking to sleep it might be the way to go! Haha... Good luck.

Hi C....

I dont know about butterflies and such but I just bought a "Moon Light" from Target for my boys. It is from national geographic. It is the shape of the moon and hangs on the wall, with no wires, it uses batteries. It comes with a remote and the moon goes thru its natural phases. It is really cool! It stays on for half an hour if you start it and dont push the remote again. It stays on longer if you keep pushing the button. Just a thought.

My daughter is also almost 4 (Feb 26!) and has been having a tough time sleeping with her active imagination. I found a nightlight at Fred Meyer in their lightbulb section that is very bright, but low energy/heat. It is oblong and has a push button on/off switch on the top. It has done the trick so far. She also has a fish tank in her room and I turn the fish light on before bedtime.
Other than that, if nightmares are a problem, I used to (still have it) a garden gnome that stood guard by my closet door to keep the "bad guys" away. Good luck!

The Barbie Storyteller Alarm Clock has a projector that projects a butterfly, Barbie, or a flower on the wall or ceiling. It also has a feature that Barbie tells two stories. I got this for my daughter for Christmas, and love it.

We have a Twilight Turtle, as do friends of ours who have a 2-year-old and an almost-5-year-old. I highly recommend that line. It puts constellations on the ceiling, and you can choose different colors. Good luck!

My 4-year-old son loves his "Moon in My Room." It's a realistic looking moon made by National Geographic. It can be found at Target. You hang it on a wall and use a remote to either have it go through all of the lunar stages or you can just put it on one of the stages to control the brightness. It will turn itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity, which is just enough time for my son to fall asleep.

There's a couple really cute ones that look like turtles and ladybugs that project stars on the ceiling. I think BRU carries them now, but lots of boutique places also carry them. If you look online, I think it's called a twilight turtle.

What about a lava lamp or something similar? My boys had one when they were younger and found the continual burbling of the lava moving around to be very hypnotic / soothing.

Fireworks (at the mall, or there is one in U village, Seattle) has a lot of cool lights that can be pretty dim (some could use a normal lightbulb with a low wattage) - they include ones that have rotating designs or some neat hanging lights.

If you are in Seattle Land of Nod has a couple of neat options that look a little like hard plastic slugs (i know, they're not ugly though), and come in different colors. I have one of these and i like that it has a sleep feature and turns off after 15 minutes.

That turtle galaxy projector sounds cool, too!

Hi,
Okay, so it is not a real night light per se, but it is really cool. Check out the "Candela" lights by OXO. They sit on a base and recharge, then when you need it, pick it up, and voila, the light comes on. There is also a switch on the bottom, to turn it off. If my 4 year old son gets lonely / scared in the night, he cuddles it for awhile, then goes back to sleep. They are a bit pricey, but worth it and cute.

Go to a craft store, and get a light shade. You can get some stamps (the type they use in scrap booking to cut out the shapes) and then press out the shape on the lamp you would like for her to have. She can even help with the design.
Good luck

Hello. Have you considered the nighttime turtle that displays various star constellations on the ceiling? I've seen it recently in numerous catalogs, and just found it on ebay under "nighttime turtle." I hope this helps. Good luck!

We just use our stars and flower ones from Ikea. however we make our kids turn theirs off before falling asleep.

We don't have issues with monsters or being scared of the dark, but we also co-slept until just recently. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

A word of caution about nite lights. First a statistic for you, leukemia rates are much higher among children that use nite lights. The body clock is meant to be dark at night and light during the day. When there is a light in the room, the biorhythm is upset and melatonin levels go haywire, even just the light of a clock can upset this delicate balance. I even use black out curtains on all of our windows at night to maximize sleep times, especially during summer months. I did find a light that had a dual switch, one for a regular bulb and one for a nite light bulb, it houses both, so if I need a small light for something I can turn it on without having to turn on the large bulb at night. but I never leave it on. It was a vintage fisher price light that I found on ebay. My daughter always tells me to turn out the lights and has become accustomed to sleeping in the total darkness, even when she wakes during the night, she finds her way to the door, or calls for me. good luck

My son is really into the movie CARS and for Christmas last year he got a wall light/lamp thing that is in the shape of a Traffic Light. It's really awesome and it's his night light. So, maybe you could find something that she is into and see if there is something that is fitting your needs. I think that my brother got his lamp at Wal-mart. I'm sure you could look at most stores. You could also try e-bay....I just looked up "Princess Lamp", there is a DISNEY PRINCESS MOTON LAMP for 17.99 that looks pretty cool. Anyway - good luck. I hope you find that perfect addition.

We have a twilight turtle, by cloud b. It projects stars, real constellations. It has three colors to choose. My daughter loves it. She has used it since she was a baby. I got mine on ebay. Just bought one for my nephew from ebay too! It does not mount on the crib. Its kind of like a stuffed animal, but the shell is hard.

C.,

Check the Home Improvement section of your local Target store. They usually have a great selection of kid's room DIY stuff for boys and girls. I'd also check Babies R Us/Toys R Us. Could also try Home Depot/Lowes as well.

Because of where the outlets are placed in my kids' rooms a nightlight was not possible, so we got sliding dimmer switches for their rooms. The only thing about those though is that the energy saver swirly bulbs don't work with the dimmer switch. Just having some light in their room when they wake up in the middle of the night has helped both of my kids tremendously. I was surprised when adding that switch when my now 2 year old daughter was maybe six months old.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

Have you been to the Seattle Center Science Center? I am sure they have something. Also try the web. I am sure if you do some surfing you will find the exact thing. When my daughter was a teenage I found star and planets that glowed in the dark and attached to the ceiling--I am sure if you go to an educational book store you can find something like that. Also this is the address of a company that creates switch plates of different designs that you might find suitable. ____@____.com

I hope that these ideas help you. W.

I had a hard time, for awhile, finding a night light that worked for my son. I eventually started getting glow stcks. He loves them and they give off just enough light to last up to eight hours. Saves on electricity. Hope this idea helps! :)
