This may have been asked already. So sorry if it has been. I have been off the site for a few days, and I don't want to go back through all the posts!

I am going to a gift exchange party this week. We're supposed to bring gifts to exchange, you know, where you can steal the gifts, etc. My husband is bringing a gift card. i want to do something else. I think the limit is about $10 or so. Thoughts? We have joked about bringing a kitten, but I don't think I can pull that one off. It would be funny though. We might not be very popular when we leave though...

Thanks ladies! I know you'll have some good ideas.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the ideas, please keep them coming.

As a note, we are not really bringing a kitten. We thought it was a funny idea. The people coming to the party are all good friends. We would have brought the kitten home with us again if they didn't really want it. And, this is a Christian group, so both booze and lottery tickets probably wouldn't be a huge hit. LOL I wouldn't be offended by alcohol, but some there would be.

When playing Dirty Santa one must always be open to the idea they won't be going home with the gift they like the best...most likely it will be a dud. That is what always happens to me.

If you implement some rules at the beginning it does make it easier. Like a gift can only be taken away 3 times. That means one person goes to the table and selects a gift. Then another person takes it. Then a person can take it from them. Then only one more can take it and the gift is theirs to keep. As the gift is taken from someone they immediantly are the next person in line to get a gift and they can take any gift that has not already been exchanged until it is out of the game.

Anther rule is that when someone takes a gift from you then you have to get a different gift, however if that gift is taken by the next person in line they can go at that time and take the original gift back if they want to. Sort of no tag backs....but they do get another chance if they have at least one person in between them.

I enjoy playing with people that are really good friends and that will not have hard feelings over the changes. Have a great time!

Board games or card games might be fun. There are some cute Monopoly, Sorry, etc. card games that are popular right now and definitely under $10. Other ideas...

windshield ice scraper
wrapping paper wrapped up ;)
a tin of popcorn
a cookie cook book (or any cook book)
a bag of 3-4 popular weekly magazines
lottery tickets
a holiday decoration (like a window santa or snowman...I've seen some for like $8-10 at the grocery store)
scarf, hat or mittens
photo frame or photo books

We have had gift exchanges at our Sunday School christmas party... and even there, some of the most popular have involved wine!

There have also been some on the risque' side..... and have re-appeared every year as a gag gift.

You know your friends better, though, and whether they would be offended by alcohol.

I am going to a work Christmas party too on Thursday and the gift limit is $10 or more. I bought a coffee mug with peppermint flavor, coffee and hot chocolate in the mug.

I used to do this with my co-workers at my old job. One of the biggest hits was wine glasses. It really didn't appeal to me, but they were always fought over. I always liked the food or gift cards so I wouldn't end up with some cheap nick nack that just has to be dusted or only pulled out during the holidays.

Please don't bring a kitten. What if someone allergic ends up with it, or worse someone who hates kittens. It would not be funny at all. That being said, it is my experience that alcohol and lottery scratch tickets are the most sought after swap gifts.
