Christmas Shopping--A New Tradition? and a GREAT Idea!

During the holidays, most families spend a proportionately large amount of money for gifts.
We work within a budget, trying to find that "right" thing for everyone on our list, right?.
It occurred to me that maybe the recipient of the chosen gift isn't the only one that can benefit from our choice.

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor.

This year can be different. This year Americans can give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans.
There is no longer an excuse that, at gift-giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands.  Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box!
Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut.  How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership?  It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed?
Small, American-owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen?  Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates.  And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half-dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.  Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom?  Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

If someone's computer could use a tune-up, and you know you can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

If you're looking for something more personal, local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves.
They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Etsy!

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner-operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip.  And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house?  When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community.  If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

I think we can give generously AND help out American businesses!
This is MY new American Christmas tradition. I am choosing to speak (loudly) with my holiday budget.
I think if everyone could incorporate some local, small businesses into their sources for gifts, it might make a difference.
Are you in? Thoughts?

That's a great idea. I always try to patronize the local restraunts. I'd rather my money go to a guy that has to buy his kids shoes like me, rather than putting it in Chilis corporate coffers. I hadn't thought about using gift giving opportunities to strenghten my community. Thanks For Posting This. It gives me a so much pride in my country to see people pulling together for the common good. That's how we built this nation. O. brick at a time.

This is awesome. After Christmas's with my kiddos getting seriously 50 gifts each from the respective extended family I started to request "gifts of experience" - dance lessons, gymnastics, etc - from my parents.

My MIL totally resisted (she loves to buy junk) but my Mom is completely on board - it's so much nicer.

I read that article yesterday and thought about posting it also. I think it's a great idea to shop wise this year, I hope most Americans will take that into consideration.

I got this same email quote for quote earlier this week. Thanks for posting it here! (I've been sick, but did think about posting it on here).

I say it's a great idea. I can always go for a burger at the local burger joint!
Car wash sounds nice too! Mani-Pedi even better.

(Of course, I'm O. of those who really looks at labels and tries to limit my 'made in china' purchases anyways).

added: Vocalpoint http://www.vocalpoint.com/index.html is even doing a "plege to shop small businesses" where you can win a $25 gift card just by pledging to shop at local small businesses the day after thanksgiving instead of the big chains.

Love the idea! Always go to a few local craft shows and see if I can find gifts. Have done the gift cards, too, but there really isn't much of a local eatery here - much is chain.... but I'll be thinking on it more!!
