Chronic Bladder Infection Home Remedies and Relief

My mother has chronic bladder infections due to a protruding bladder. She does not have health coverage until October, when she turns 65 and receives Medicare. She is very uncomfortable, but just cannot afford to go to the doctor. Anyone know a home remedy or natural antibiotic to help relieve her pain? She takes AZO to help control the constant urge to go, but I'm wondering if there are other options. Thanks for your help.

So What Happened?

Well, thanks to everyone for your prayers and advice. Mom is feeling better. She was able to enroll in a discount program through Care Now, and go there for treatment. The last time she went to the doctor, she told her the repeat UTI's were possible, due to her protruding bladder. Lot's of you provided some good prevention tips, once this one is under control. Thanks again and God Bless.

I read all the post and see where Cranberry Juice was recommended. But no clarified that you do not want Cranberry Juice cocktail. Which is what most stores have. You want to get 100% juice. Its actually not that easy to find. I usually end up having to go with the Organic kind. It seems to be the only one without sugar and that is defiantly 100% juice. ALso GNC sells the pill and they work great also.

This is tough because I understand not being able to afford medical care right now, but I am sure you know that bladder infections can progress up the ureters to the kidneys and cause a kidney infection. You can become quite ill with that.

Perhaps you can find a clinic of some kind where she can get on some antibiotics.

I have some information on some natural products that would be very beneficial not only for you mother and her condition but any other conditions that you may run into with your children as they get older. If you would like to hear more information on these great products that can benefit all of you can call to ###-###-#### or see for yourself at www.triunfando.my4life.com.

I have battled with chronic bladder infections in the past. I get U-Tract from the health food store. It's about $30 a jar but well worth it!

However, if she has had this for a while, you don't want to run the risk of a kidney infection so you might want to get her on antibiotics to cure the current infection and then start using the U-Tract as a preventative and/or at the first sign of another infection. Cranberry juice is acidic and can actually cause more pain once you have a bladder infection. It is a great preventative though.

I also suffer from chronic UTI's. Yes, she needs to be careful & see a doctor if her infections don't clear up quickly (I ended up in the hospital once because I waited too long), but it is often possible to beat the infection without antibiotics. If she has them often she should know her body & when to get to the doctor. I prefer Cystex to AzoStandard. Cystex relieves the pain & urgency with an analgesic, plus it has an antibacterial medication in it (it also doesn't turn your urine orange). Lots of water (at least 3 liters a day), NO caffeine, no sodas, lots of vitamin C. Cranberry juice helps because it is acidic & hampers bacteria growth in the bladder. The water flushes the bladder & helps hamper bacteria growth as well. Good luck

Your mother needs to see a doctor no matter what. If she has an infection it will cause further health problems, including major damage to her kidneys. She needs to contact the JPS Health Care Connection for low cost healthcare until she gets on Medicare. Have her call ###-###-#### for more information. Besides the AZO and cranberry juice there's not much in the way of home remedies or natural remedies to help with her situation.
(I am on the Connection program as well, I pay $5 for PCP visits, nothing for visits to specialists and $10 - $5 for prescriptions).

I'm sorry to hear of your mom's health condition. The responses you've received are good, but may I add, has she considered health care through a County hosp., such as Parkland? If her infection gets out of control she might get an infection in the blood which is called sepsis or being septic. It is very dangerous and could be life threatening. I implore her to consider Parkland(it's really not so bad, their Dr.'s are really good) or another facility that will help her according to her income. GOD'S blessings to you both.

Cranberry juice! It works great for me whenever I feel an infection coming on, and I keep reading that it has been proven to do so, so not just a coincidence for me. I would have her drink it with each meal (or several times a day.) And look for the brands that have 100% juice and not the high fructose blends. I hope it helps her! -- Maybe after she is better she could make it her morning juice instead of OJ to ward off future episodes.

Hi N.,
I swear by cranberry juice...it is awesome and has always done the trick for me.

Of course, I don't know how long your mother has already let it progress. Ever since I've discovered the cranberry juice thing, I've been able to stop mine fairly early on.

Also, I'm not a doctor. But...I'm not so sure that your mother taking something to keep her from going is going to help with the infection. It may even make it worse, or perhaps combat the cranberry juice effect if the importance is to let the juice run all the way through the system multiple times.

Plus, our bodies tend to do the things they find necessary to combat whatever is troubling them. So, going more often may be one of those. Yes, she may find it uncomfortable to go a greater number of times, but it's better than allowing this infection to progress to kidney issues. Unfortunately the old adage is probably true here: no pain, no gain.

And, if this natural method doesn't work for your mother, I agree with another poster who said to take her to a clinic. Bladder infections are quick and easy to diagnose and a prescription can be given...not your most expensive clinic visit, for sure (not compared to what it could turn into before October!)

I hope this helps!!

If it is indeed an infection your Mom probably needs an antibiotic. Once she is cured a probiotic may help keep her that way. I know some yogurts have that in them now to get her started. Here is a link for a probiotic I think is awesome. I think it is cheaper and a more reliable probiotic for daily use. I was having problems with yeast infections until I started taking this. No problems since.

Prevention- cranberry pills, no cokes, drink water instead. Also, after toileting- wipe from front to back. I work with the elderly. You would be surprised to know some were never taught that and get urinary tract infections alot.

Your Mom really needs to see a doctor. I had an untreated bladder infection when I was younger and it turned into a severe kidney infection and I had to be hospitalized. It can also do damage to your kidneys.

I know it may cost a lot to go to a doctor but it will cost a lot more to go into the hospital and i think it would become that before October. October is a long ways off.

Dear N.,

I suggest that your mom drinks lots of cranberry juice and water, water, water! You can also buy cranberry tablets, but drinking the juice is better, I think. Also, the pain can be relieved with Uristat, which is available over the counter.
