Circumcision Healing: Is This Normal?

OK. I'm trying not to be overly concerned, but my little boy's circumcision (Plastibell method) is healing a little abnormally. It's making me so squeamish and panicky. Part of the skin underneath the plastibell has detached from the ring while the other side is still attached, so this skin is forming a "v" shape between the ring and the scrotom. Has anyone had this happen to their newborn boy? Should I take him into the emergency room? I hate that his happened over the weekend, just in time to freak out a new mother. Thanks, mamas for your advice!

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone, for your advice! This was uncharted territory for me so I was a little anxious. The plastibell fell off the next day, and things look normal again. I just wish that I could have been informed of the variations of "normal" healing by the Dr. so that I could've avoided the stress of worry. No helpful info on the web either. Well, now I know! Thanks, all!

I only have girls, and none of my friends with boys have circumcised their boys, but it sounds like a call to the doctor would be a good idea!

If you're that worried about it, YES, take him to the doctor this morning. Better safe than sorry!

Call your pediatrician and your OB -since that's probably who did the circumcision. Both should have answering services who will page them to get back to you. You can also call the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta nurse line and ask.

Call your pediatrician. Usually they have great advice nurses you can talk to about anything. The call will help determine if you should make an appointment or not. Enjoy your boy!

My boy's intact, but I would suggest talking to a dr, you don't want to mess with infection.

Two of my three sons had the plastibell and it's normal for it to heal faster on one side than the other. Keep an eye on it but as long as it doesn't appear red or swollen the other side should fall off in the next day or so. I was weirded out by it when it happened to me but the circumcision turned out perfectly. You should call your ped just to make sure they agree if you're still worried, I am just telling you my experience and what my ped told me.

Sounds normal to me and I've had two boys. It may be that the bell is detatching and may be caught temporarily on some skin. But I think that if you are concerned you should call the Pediatrician's office and talk to the nurse. I'm sure they have heard of this before and it sure beats sitting in the emergency room around alot of sick people with a small baby when it really isn't an emergency.

Hi Ana,

I agree, just call the doctor and leave a message. However, I will tell you in the meantime that I have two boys who had two different types of circumcision, and it doesn't look "perfect" either way. It is not an exact science, so I am sure they all look different.
