Hi. My 4 yr. old son has been having difficulty urinating (can't get all of the urine out and complains that his stomach hurts. He has been peeing frequently but says that it doesn't hurt when he goes. The cultures have come back negative yet there is clearly something wrong. He has an ultrasound scheduled for next Friday (the earliest they could do it) but I have been going crazy. Does anyone know what else might be wrong with him? I have the worst feeling (which isn't like me).

I'm not an expert, but I seem to remember that frequent and difficulty with uination can also be sings of diabetes. Has that possibility been raised?

Are you talking to a pediatric urologist with the ultrasound? My son was actually diagnosed in-utero with a urology issue. Before this I knew next to nothing about urology, but since have learned more than I ever hoped. They noticed that my son's kidney was slightly dilated - in upper normal limits - so they followed him through the pregnancy and after birth. They suggested that he may have a blockage which could cause the dilation. At birth they decided he didn't have a blockage, but did a test called VCUG to confirm. It's NOT a fun test - especially with an older child I would imagine. They put a catheter in and fill the bladder with dye. Then they take xrays as he empties his bladder to see what happens with the urine. They found that my son has reflux which they grade. My son's is the worse level unfortunately which means it is unlikely to self-repair. The reflux puts him at increased risk for uti's so we test him at every well visit and he take preventative antibiotics every other day. If your son had tested pos for a uti, they probably would have immediately done this test since it's rare for children to get them - especially boys. With reflux, some of the urine goes backwards towards the kidney during urination so it could cause your son to feel like he needs to go frequently or that he doesn't go all the way. I do know someone that had a daughter diagnosed around 3.5 after discovering an uti. Sometimes it repairs itself if it is lower grade. If not, they can do surgery which is supposed to be quite successful. My pediatrician compared reflux to an ear infection for a urologist. We see the chief of pediatric urology at Children's Hospital of Pgh and he's quite good. If you are looking for a urologist, we'd recommend him - Dr. Docimo. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Well I am not a doctor or a uralogist by far but I do have a daughter who has a kidney reflux disorder. It's where the urine goes back up towards the kidney and there are four levels of this reflux. You could always ask to get a kidney dialouses test done if nothing comes up from the ultrasound. If you would like I do have a urologist that is in Richmond who is very good if you would like his name and the number to his office I will be more than happy to give them to you.
My Oh My...You have great responses on this one....it could be anything....Jus be there for your son, and dont think the worst...I myself would think that it is a UTI....But again, it could be that he is backed up...I really feel that as uncomfortable as it is, and that he is 4, you should take him to the ER if it gets any worse, and I would also call around, and see if you can get him the proper treatment...you have some great ladies here giving you doctors #'s, and of all sorts.....Take care
He may have a narrow urethra that just hasn't caught up with the rest of his growing body.

Well you know that the best thing to do if he is complaining of pain is go to the ER. Or call other places to see if they can get him in sooner. Quantum Imaging (my employer) there number is###-###-####. I work out of the hospitals so I am not sure if they are open on the weekends. They are an outpatient imaging center off of trindle road. But like I said the ER is the best bet if he really is in pain.

Sometimes a constipated child or one who tried to hold his bowels will have those symptoms. I know I get focused on a problem that one of my children has and I go a bit nuts too. Especially when it goes on all day and night. I have had one with some UTI issues. One currently with bed wetting. I think there is more to it, like a valve problem. What doctor are you using? Please let me know if you like them because I am going to scedule her for a urologist.

My son had similar problems and we found out he has urinary reflux. His was only slight, so we opted not to go with the medication. Maybe it could be that?
My first thought, with stomach pain would be his bowels. Has he been going, how often, are they hard, etc...? I used to be in the medical field and that's the first thing we always checked when patients complained of stomach pain. My son had constipation problems around that age. If came from eating too much cheese, peanutbutter, and various other foods that cause it. He still sometimes has problems. That's why we constantly keep some type of prunes in the house. It's just a thought. Hope all works out.
