Cleaning Childrens Potty

This may sound like such a stupid question, but I am looking for some opinions on what others have done!! My 26 month old son is starting to show sings of potty-training readiness and has a small potty. I'm just confused as to how others clean the potty!!! It has a removable part where the pee/poo goes, but I guess I am just concerned about cross-contamination. I don't want to end up with sponges/sinks/etc that get germs from the process and assume there is a good way to go about it! Any thoughts??

Skip the children's potty and get a seat the goes over top the toilet seat. It fits over nicely and there is nothing to clean up (except the little cup that catches pee splatter) They are probably sold in the same area of the store as the pottys. This will also help him to adjust to using the real toilet (which will prove very helpful when you are in a store later and he has to go and there is no little potty!)

I recommend teaching him to use the toilet also. What worked for us was teaching him to sit on the toilet backwards (facing the tank.) He is very stable and does not feel as if he's going to fall in. It was very easy for him to do, no clean up, and nothing extra to buy. My son has been doing it this way almost from the beginning and it works great.

I would dump out the smaller part in the regular potty and to celebrate, would have my daughter flush. Then I would rinse in the bathroom sink or bathtub with a little soap. To clean the larger part, I would spray with bathroom cleaner or wipe with a clorox wipe, let sit and then rinse in the tub with hot water. This worked well and I never had any issues. You can always wipe down the sink or tub after or just rinse with hot, soapy water (which is what I would do), to make sure nothing icky is still lingering. If you want to use a rag or sponge, just dedicate it to that and rinse/reuse when you clean it out again and again.

***A HUGE piece of advice----If your son will go on the big potty using a smaller seat, do that ASAP...the switch from little potty to big potty can be a struggle, so the sooner he can make the switch the better. Also, less mess for you! :)

I second the comment on teaching him to use the big potty.

If you choose (or he chooses) to use the little potty, you could get the scrubbing bubbles flushable disinfectant wipes. Dump his pee/poop into the potty and then wipe it out with them and flush it all away.

Going on my 3rd potty training child I have always done this remove bowl empty into toilet then pump soap into the bowl fill with water swish dump in toilet repeat then flush toilet if it is really messy then use paper towels with an antibacteril spray such as Lysol for all purpose cleaning I typically keep Lysol or clorox wipes on hand to use on the potty training toilet itself do a clean over daily.

I dump out the pee/poo from the little potty, rinse with warm water from the sink (dumping into the toilet) and then spray a water/vinegar mix into the potty, swish it around and dump it into the big potty. If there it was a messy poo, I'll leave the vinegar to soak in the potty until the next time it needs to be used. Using chemical cleaners on the potty gave my son a rash on his bottom so I had to switch to the vinegar. Sometimes I do still wipe it out with a lysol wipe or spray it when I'm cleaning the rest of the bathroom but I have to rinse it really well with water so he doesn't get the rash. I also find it helps cut down on the smell that seems to linger after a little boy sometimes misjudges where he's supposed to aim :)

My daughter hated her little potty. She only used it a handful of times. She really preferred the bigger potty so she could be like Mommy. Anyway, on the few times that she did use the little potty, I would dump the waste into the big potty. If it was poop, I would put a little of the toilet water in there and sort of swirl it around. Then I would rinse it in the sink with antibacterial dish soap. I would wipe the whole thing down with a Clorox wipe and use another on the sink. My sink was never as clean as it was when my dd was using that potty! LOL!
I wouldn't use a sponge. They just harbor germs. The fecal matter and urine would get stuck in all the little grooves. If you don't like Clorox wipes, use a paper towel or something else you can throw away after using it.

We have both the traditional potty seat and one that is built into the toilet seat in our bathroom. We started our son on the traditional potty seat and when he went we dumped it into the big toilet and then rinsed in the sink and wipe out the sink and bucket with a disinfectant wipe.

I hate to break it to you, but it is likely you already have that "cross contamination" because when you flush the toilet microscopic bits of whatever you're flushing come into the air and spread at least 6 ft from the toilet.

pee isn't dirty per se, so i just rinse it out with water.

as for #2, you can pout it into the toilet as it usually just slides out of the removable part of the potty, then you can use water or toilet paper to wipe it out.

I know you already have a potty, but our potty chair has a removable seat that clicks onto the regular toilet seat so your son won't feel like he will fall in when he sits on the big toilet. You may want to check and see if yours does that as well. Good luck!

We used to put ours in the shower with us. Our shower does not have a bathtub so we didn't have to worry about soaking in the germs, and after a couple of soapings with shampoo the potty always came out quite clean. It sounds strange but it worked.

I really disliked cleaning the little potty. For me, it was worse than changing a diaper! Yuck! And, I didn't think I would have to, I bought the potty seat for the toilet. But, my daughter was a little scared to poop on the big toilet, so I ended up with a potty chair, but, only for a couple of weeks, thank goodness! to clean it, I would dump the waste into the toilet, sometimes needing to use a bit of toilet paper to wipe it out, then rinsed it in the sink with very hot water, which cleaned it with nothing remaining, then I left it in the sink upside down to dry, when it was dry, I used a lysol wipe for the cup and then one for the sink. I didn't like using all of the wipes, but it just seemed more sanitary. Good luck to you!

My son has the same potty, and I, with him watching- so he knows that all pee & poo poo goes in the 'big potty', dump into the big toilet and then rinse and dump into the big toilet- I don't actually dump any toilet items into my drains but only because I don't always have time to clean them each day. Then I use Sol-U-Guard to clean, and let it sit 10 mins to disinfect the little potty once a day- since he does touch it constantly and it is also his sink step stool. This is chemical free- yet is effective in killing 99.9 percent of germs including the H1N1 virus! Spray on, let sit, wipe off.

Rinse with water every time he pees and wash with soap every time he poops (it is not that nasty, I do not use sponge...).My son uses the potty since he was 20 month, never had problems with germs or any cross contamination...He is 28 month now.
