My dogs have made a mess of the guest room carpet and we want to replace it. This has been going on for years so the pad obviously needs to go but we aren't sure what to do to the underlying concrete. I'm sure it will have stains on it when the carpet comes up. Any suggestions on how to get the smell out of porous concrete so they don't mark the new carpet? Do we need to seal the concrete afterwards so they can't smell any leftovers and nothing new can be added? Thanks for your help.
You need to have the concrete sealed-the carpet cleaning companies will be able to do it. I worked in apartment management and that is the only way to get rid of the odor.
That should also help keep the dog from doing it again to the new carpet

We recently had to do this to one of our Rental homes b/c the family had cats that peed everywhere. My husband removed the carpet and pad and then treated it with Moradic Acid (you can get it at home depot or lowes) and then sealed it. You will want to make sure you have no kiddos around when you do it and he wears a mask b/c it is very toxic. It works though for sure! Hope it all works out for you!

Hi L.! I've never had to do this myself, but I have some great products that get all kinds of things out. Stains (blood, grease, medicine, red wine, etc) and smells out too. They are all natural and work great!! They work great on clothes, carpet, tile, showers, dryers, etc.

As any of you who have had urine odors in concrete or tile grout, you know that surface treatments and sealers simply don't work. The first humid day and the odor comes right back. The only thing I have found that actually removes the smell is OdorXit's Concentrate. Unfortunately it is not available locally in most areas but is available on line. Further, getting rid of the soaked in urine is a bit of a job. The website had a really detailed procedure for using the product on any kind of masonry. If you don't follow the instructions you are wasting your time and money.
Don't bother with bleach it won't clean the pheramons out of the concrete. 2 yrs ago I remodeled my entire house. I ripped the carpet out and the padding. The concrete was stained from dogs messing up the floor over the years. I went to Home Depot, you can also go to Lowes. Ask them for a concrete cleaner. You also need a concrete sealer. I can't remember the name of the brand of cleaner and sealer we used. It takes 24 hrs to set, so do NOT walk on it once you mop it over the concrete. It is toxic so wear a mask when applying it. You can purchase that at the hardware store also. If you plan on putting carpet down yourself, make sure to have the carpet cut an inch shorter then the room. Put the tack strips down and then padding, then lay carpet. Rent a carpet kicker from the hardware store. This will stretch the carpet. If the carpet is not stretched you will end up with the carpet bunching over time, creating bubbles in it. I layed carpet in bedrooms, cermaic tile in kitchen, wood floors in living room. If wood flooring, make sure you buy the water proof padding under the wood.(this is a special type of padding) Concrete sweats, especially in the heat and will warp the wood if the padding is not layed. I have a lot of rental property. My maintenance man tells me that when he worked in apt maintenance, they used to paint the concrete underneath the carpet pad when there was pet urine and that the paint worked to "seal" the concrete. Also, I have discovered a wonderful product; I think it's called "X-O". It is a "smell neutralizer." You can get it at Elliott's - just ask the staff to help you find a smell neutralizer. It actually eliminates the smell by combining with the molecules and neutrailzing the smell. I recently had a tenant leave cats unattended for about a month in her apt; same as you but much worse and the apt was second floor so it went into wood. We ripped out the carpet and the pad, aired it out and used the X-O over and over for a couple of weeks and now the smell is completely gone. Good luck.
There's an allergy store in north Arlington that sells a product that neutralizes pet odors. You can spray it directly on the slab and it kills a protein (?). I'm sorry I can't remember the name. When we moved into our house, the previous owner kept a cat in the garage (which I'm highly allergic to because of my asthma) and my husband bought 2 bottles and sprayed the entire garage down. No problems! Hope this helps!

The house we first bought when we moved here had an issue with that with their pets. Of course, our pets marked the spot when we moved in. When we removed the carpet, we just soaked the area in bleach. We didn't have any issues after that.
Bleach kills all the germs too. I use it everywhere.

I just went through the exact same thing, although mine was with a cat. Cat urine is almost impossible to get out. We ripped up the pad and carpet. We tried bleach, special cleaners, painting the floor etc, and nothing really got the smell completely out.
Finally, we went to Home Depot and bought a Behr brand product that was a Sealer. It was in a regular paint can..I am almost positive it was called Behr Concrete Sealer-Vapor Barrier. You paint the concrete with it..and by the next day it was COMPLETELY gone. It was wonderful. The only thing is.. this stuff is oil based, so it is strong.. but the smell goes away after a few days.

I don't know the name of it, but I saw of HGTV somebody talking of a "neutralizer" to scrub urine stained hardwood floors with. I guess the smell was so bad, it was recommended they do it on a daily basis for about a week. I'd call PetSmart or someplace like that and ask them.
I also believe Kilz would cover and forever block the smell too. If it were me though - I would want to know the smell was GONE and not just blocked... just so after the new carpet was laid down, the odor would never surprisingly POP back up!
When we had to replace our carpet pad because of cat urine (which is 10x worse than dog urine!) we painted the stained concrete with Kilz II, the paint primer you can buy at any Home Depot, Lowes, etc. I heard from 3 different people that it would cover or block the smell on the concrete.
