I have a 30 year old sheet vinyl floor. I have heard to clean it with a bleach/water mixture (maybe include some dish soap). Firstly, what is the ratio? Secondly, I have a septic tank; how do I dispose of the used mixture safely? Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

Don't know about septic tanks, but I've used dish soap on the floor, and it's worked great! I'm not sure about the ratio - maybe 3/4 cup to a gallon? Might be worthwhile to visit a website like www.clorox.com or something - they might have something there to tell the ratio.

Good luck!

Use hot water with some vinegar, it will clean your floors well and is non-toxic and one of the cheapest ways to get stuff clean! I probably use 1/2 cup to a gallon of hot water.

Regardless of what kind of floor you have, please don't use bleach - in fact get the bleach out of your house. Your baby(s) are going to be crawling on it and bleach is one of the most toxic chemicals they can be exposed to. You should not be exposed to it especially when you're pregnant. Please look into ridding your home of toxic chemicals before one of those precious children gets badly burned or worse. The manufacturers don't tell you of their dangers or no one would buy their products, but the majority of children's poisonings are caused from household cleaners, many that you would never suspect are very toxic. They are also very hard on your septic system. Many laundry products turn into a hard lump which will even clog up your pipes before they get into the septic system.

I learned about how dangerous these are when trying to overcome my son's allergies. I was not looking for something to sell and in fact very seldom do any selling. But I couldn't resist sharing what I've learned to help you protect your precious Mia and #2. You'd also be surprised at what bleach espcially does to childrens' behavior. When I read some of the questions here I often wonder what a difference getting the toxic cleaning products out of the home would make.

Here's were I get the safest ones on the market. By the way, this company has been green for over 50 years so it's not a trend they're following: www.shaklee.net/changinglives.

You asked some great questions and I know you want to product your precious children. Here's a real easy way - and by the way, you'll save about $250/year. S.

Please don't use bleach water around your baby and especially if you are pregnant. I use Basic H2 for almost everything in my house and Basicg G if I need a germicide. They work great, are non-toxic, are environmentally friendly and actually help septic tanks. I think you can call posion control and ask them how to dispose of the bleach mixture.
The best part about the Basic H2 is that you use 1/2 oz per gallon of water and that turns out to be about 12 cents, as a window cleaner you put TWO drops in 16 oz of water. The window cleaner works to be less than a penny a gallon. I love this stuff.
Congrats on your growing family! Let me know if you would like to know where I get my Basic H2.

Is there a wax build-up or yellowing that you are trying to take care of too? There's a product line called New Beginning by Armstrong. I have bought it at flooring stores and it's AWESOME! Good luck!

Hi L., I had to respond to your question when I saw that you have baby girl, you are pregnant and you have a septic tank. I have been using a line of products that would work great on your floor ( + more) and they are completely safe -- no toxic fumes, and they are 100% environmentally friendly. After using them for about 5 years, I started selling them. It was so great to have only products in the house that were safe for my 2 sons. One had some allergies and the laundry products were helpful too. you may have heard of Shaklee...? here is my site www.dianeshealthyalternatives.com
take care, D.

well one cup of bleach to every 10gallons of water. How do you use bleach in your laundry? Or do you go to a laundry mat? Or do you use bleach? It all goes pretty much the same direction...right? Other than that, bleach will evaporate overnight...so you don't have to worry about it doing any harm to anything after that. Especially if its deliuted. Good Luck!
