Hello B., You can use lime away as long as you rinse very well repeatedly after. I run it through my coffee pot from time to time. The directions just say to flush the pot with 3 full cycles of water afterward. Good luck.
I'm looking for a product that will get rid of lime and hard water build up on the PetMate Fresh Flow Water Bowl. I would use lime away or another product of this nature, but it needs to be pet friendly, so I'm not poisoning our precious fur babies. Dish soap and water just don't cut it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I tried the hot water and vinegar on our PetMate Fresh Flow water bowls. I turned the pump on and let it pump it through the bowl for about 15 minutes and used a toothbrush to scrub the water bowl. I would say it got rid of about 90% of the buildup. I think I might give the L.O.C. from Amway a try. About a week after cleaning the bowls with vinegar and hot water and rinsing with soap and water there was a slimy coating in the water bowl. I used hot water and more dish soap on it and it seems to be doing great now. Thanks again for all the great responses I got and for everyones help!

B.,
Have you tried using vinegar? It will cut thru lime really well. You can use it straight or mixed with water, depending on how much lime is built up. If its really bad you may want to soak it overnight. Good luck.
B.,
Have you tried citrus? Try sprinkling baking soda in the bowl and then scrub with the cut side of half a fresh lemon.
Try soaking it in white vinegar.
Vinegar works well to remove hard water build-up. Either by soaking the whole unit or rinsing with the vinegar--white, right out of the jug, let it sit, then scrub.
Does that help?
What kind of fur babies?

B. - Amway makes a product called L.O.C. That has been around for over 30 years. It's always been a "green" product and is safe enough to brush your teeth with! Not the "tastiest" but in a pinch I would use it.
It's probably one of if not the safest product you could get. Let me know if you're interested I can get you a website.
Good luck!

Fill the part that the animal drinks from with hot/boiling water and drop 1 or 2 denture cleaning tables in. Let it soak for about 1/2 hour. This also works great for sippie cup inserts and tops that are impossible to clean.
Its going to take a strong product to get rid of the buildup. You won't poison your pets if you make sure to rinse away all the residue after you clean it.
If in doubt, call the vet....but pets are pretty resilient!!

Vinegar! Let it soak. We have the hardest water possible in our area and use plain vinegar in our water cooker when it needs. It works great. Something less stinky, would be baking soda and lemon juice made into a paste, also let it sit for some time, scrub and rinse.
soak it in strong vinegar water until the lime loosens and is easily removed then rinse thoroughly before use. This also works with coffee makers!
I can think of two pet(and child) friendly products to use. White vinegar or lemon juice. A 15 minute soak with either one of those will loosen the lime and make it soft enough to scrub loose. No residue, either. Baking soda will make it bubble and seem like you are making progress, but adding baking soda to acids like lemon juice or vinegar just neutralizes some of the acid.
Works for your shower doors, coffee pots, etc. Just a little elbow grease needed.
good luck, L.
Hi B.,
A perfectly safe product to use would be Scour Off from Shaklee. I just love it, and I think it would do the trick- it is used by the Wild Dolphin Project to scrub the undersides of their boats, and it won't harm anything- it is made from cherry pits and raspberry- a smooth, fine scouring paste. I use all of Shaklee's 'green' non-chemical products and have fallen in love with them, so yes, I have a website now. You can check things out and order off of my website, or I can get some for you. It retails for $8.50 plus tax and lasts forever, as you only use a little dab. I live in Davison. You can go to my Mamasource business, 'M. Goes Green' or go straight to www.shaklee.net/marilynmalvey. Good luck, M.###-###-####
Hi B.
I have one of those, I use baking soda, with damp cloth, not to much water until your done scrubbin it. Rinse good and your finished. Always use soda on my stove too, doesn't scratch. Use it like you would a cleanser. N.
B., Vinegar and baking soda, HOT water, let it sit 15 min. safe, natural, cleans out easily! Can be used in bath tub and sinks too! Have fun with your babies! Kath
If you find anything that works, PLEASE let me know. I have the same problem with mine......
I know this wasn't helpful. But I thank you if you find anything!!!
I would try filling them with a warm vinegar water solution. It is what i use to eliminate the build up in my coffee pot and any residue left over from the vinegar will clean up easily with soap and water.
Have you tried white vinegar, soak a rag with white vinegar and let it sit on the "crusty ring" oh for about ten minutes, then be sure to rise well, vinegar is safe to eat but it smells bad, and your fur babies may refuse to drink if they can still smell the vinegar. Try also scraping off the "crusty" with a flat knife or blade, after you have soaked the bowl. I hope this helps-- M.
Try white vinegar, my mom used to use it on her coffee pot for the buildup, so it's worth a shot. GL
All I can offer is that my Krups espresso machine has to be cleaned monthly with vinegar. Maybe that's a thought. Or go to a health food store ---Better Health or Whole Foods---and ask their advice.
Maybe you should just get a stainless steel water bowl for the pets.
