Cleaning the Smell of Pee off of a Couch.

My son peed so much one night that we were sleeping on the couch, and it leaked onto the couch. I cleaned it up, and put febereze on it, but it still smells. It is not as bad is if you are sitting up, because you cannot smell it, but if you lay down or get close to the spot that the pee is it smells. My Son's first birthday party is this Saturday and I would hate for his quest to have to smell it, and I sure am sick of smelling it myself.

So I am wondering if there is anything that I can do to get rid of the smell? We had that stuff put on the couch that is suppose to stop leaks from going into the couch, but it did not stop this one. :( Any ideas or advice would really help. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I read every ones responces and was very thankful for all of the advice that you all have given. I decided to try the least expensive stuff first as we had it in our house. I tried the white vinagar and even though it stunk kinda bad until it dried, it did take the pee smell out which I was really happy about. I felt better with my Son having his 1st Birthday party knowing that they were not going to be smelling pee on the couch. :)

I got this stuff online called Proxy. I use it for animal stains and have sprayed the mattress when the kids have had an accident. It takes the stain out and the odor. I use it all the time and will not be without it. I highly recommend it.

There is a product called "Urine Gone" that should get rid of the smell and anything that might be growing in that spot. I found it at Walgreen's, you can either buy just the bottle (it's black) or the kit which comes with an alternative light source so you know exactly where to spray.

Vinegar works. Use the apple cider vinegar and you won't have the smell of vinegar. You could also get a pet urine remover, that works on all urine. If you want to go earth friendly get odo ban. I use it because it's biodegradable and I believe non toxic, yet is strong enough to scrub your stove and gentle enough to freshen your laundry.

I had to this problem with my matress. My son pee'd so much one night it went through EVERYTHING. I did not sleep in the bed for a few nights and I would spray it with fabreeze and then I let it air out outside. It really helped, there is no more smell!

I looked it up after reading Tammy's post. Here is the address for Grainger:

201 E. 78th St.
Bloomington, MN 55420-1249
Phone: ###-###-####
Fax: ###-###-####

Branch Hours:
7:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Monday - Friday)

It LOOKS like it is under $13 for a gallon and that dilutes 1:64, so that would be TONS. And if a county licensor for daycare is happy with it, it sounds like it's worth it. I am going to run up there in the morning to get some. TAMMY - would you spray it on and wipe it off? I have daycare, too, so lots of little kid smells as well as our pets.

I use enzyme-based pet urine cleaners for pee-on-upholstery accidents. I don't remember what its called off-hand, but if you go to a local pet store, they'll be able to help you find the right thing.

A word of advice for future accidents: NEVER USE FEBREEZE. Much as it claims to remove odors from fabrics, it does not. And, using chemical-based cleaners/deodorizers reduces the efficacy of the natural enzyme based cleaners. It will likely take a couple of rounds of treatment to get this smell out.

Good luck,
Ray

Try putting baking soda on it for an hour or so and vacuuming it off. Or clean it with vinegar. Vingear is great for odors - I use it when my dog has an accident.

You may need a new couch...

You can try bleach but that will make a bleach spot.

Try and take carpet freshner the powder or baking soda let it sit and then vaccum it up.

I know I had a ferret pee under my couch in the lining, I cut the lining off, used bathroom bleach spray, and did the poweder and vaccum method which worked better than anythihng else I tried but I ended up throwing my couch away.

Now with my brand new couch I am strict, no food, beverages, pets, or sleeping children on my couch. I won't even let adults sleep on it without a sheet or blanket underneath them.

I use Pine 64, it can be found at Grainger. It is used in hospitals and it kills everything. I use it for my daycare and my liciensor likes it better then bleach and water. You might need to do it a couple of times, but it has taken the cat pee smell out of things for me too. So I'm sure it can get human pee smell out.

If you can not remove and wash the part that was peed on I would soak it with a pet cleaning product with enzymes. I have two children and I got a spot bot it has been a life saver and is well worth the price. My son wet the bed after his bath just before I could get his diaper on. When the spot was still wet I was able to clean it up and there is no smell. I also use it on the cream colored carpet in the living room, I can just plug it in and let it do the work. Good luck to you!

My daughter pee'd on the couch several times while napping. Worked like a charm. You can get spray bottles (ready-to-use)at walmart. If you go to Sam's CLub you can get a gallon size jug of the concentrate that comes with a spray bottle. It is a great all purpose cleaner. I use it for everything. The only thing I haven't used it on is windows and mirrors.

There is an enzyme based cleaner at the pet store that is called Natures Miracle. Our couch had a funky smell I tried everything and nothing worked. I finally paid the big bucks for Natures Miracle. I soaked the spot in it and scrubbed it in. Then let it dry on it's own. No more smell. I am unsure if it was animal or human urine but whatever it was I almost threw out the couch. You only had to get within inches of the couch to smell it. The smell never came back and it has been almost a year now.

Good Luck!
