Cloth Diapers - Abilene,TX

I've used cloth diapers with both my daughters. A total of almost 2 1/2 years now. I haven't bought any new diapers in almost 1 1/2 years. I spent about $300. I wash them twice a week. They are awesome! :)

There are a few people (who I'd like to add...haven't use cloth in decades) who will get on here tell you that cloth is terrible. They stink. You will smell like poop. Poop gets everything dirty. It stays in your machine. It's unsanitary. (The poop doesn't go in the machine!!!) Your bill goes up. Etc, etc. Not true, any of it.

I used cloth for 3 years. JUST stopped 6 months ago. I used fuzzibunz, bumgenius, and grovia. I used bumgenius pocket diapers at night, with 2 inserts and never had leaks. All of my diapers were one size. The cheapest route, is Chinese prefolds and covers. If you choose cloth, I highly recommend purchasing a diaper sprayer. It attaches to your toilet in 5 minutes, and you're good to go! You can spray the poop off the diaper, into the toilet. The sprayer has come in handy in other ways, too! You have to get a diaper friendly detergent. I use Country Save. You can buy it in some stores, or online. One box lasts us months. If you use a regualar detergent from the sore, it will cause buildup on the diapers, and they will leak. Speaking of leaks. Leaks with cloth diapers, are typically user error. They will repel water if you use fabric softeners, static sheets, and the wrong detergent. Hard water also causes buildups. If you live in Texas, then you have hard water. I get bottles Calgon water softer from the store (Walmart,) and used that in a wash once a week. I also stripped every few months or so. I stripped by turning up the water heater and doing a couple of very hot washes. Sun drying is great, since it helps the life of the diaper, and bleaches and sanitizes. You will want to follow the regular washing instructions, that the diaper manufacturer gives you. I put the dirty diapers in a "wet bag" and washed the diapers along with the bag every 2-3 days. The wet bag did NOT emit odors.

I find no downsides to using cloth. My bill only went up a matter of cents per month. My son never got rashes. I KNEW there weren't nasty chemicals on his most vulnerable skin. (If you aren't scared by the chemicals in diapers, please read about them. I never had leaks. I didn't have to spend thousands a year on diapers and wipes. (I used flannel and warm water for wipes.) I spent $200 up front, and was done.

Love Bum Genius. I used an all in one diaper. Was much easier and went on just like a regular diaper so others (like my husband) wouldn't be too "afraid" to use them :)

I used a local diaper service. It was cheaper than disposables and no laundry for me (other than the covers.) It was TOTALLY worth it!

We used a diaper service with prefolds and Velcro or snap wrap covers.

I didn't want to wash at home, so that worked great for me. If we ever have anotherone, I'd probably go with AI2 or pockets and just wash inserts at home (or use prefolds as inserts and have a service come pick them up).

I came from the old school of flat fold diapers and the cover. They were very economical as you could fold them any size to fit the child as they grow. A few still exist in the house as dust cloths and window cleaning rags some 40 years later.

The new ones are more convenient to the new moms as the all in one style. So with the many responses from you ladies I will most likely make the all in ones with inserts for extra absorbancy.

I'm using cloth on my third kid. i gave up using cloth at night with my second but they are great during the day.

I recommend some one size all in ones, and some newborn size/small.

I like rocks green detergent and most of my stash is bum genius. I prefer lots of other diapers, but for your money, bum genius or fuzzi buns is the the way to go.
