I have never tried the disposable ones, but for my son I have always used the swim trunks with a built-in diaper. He has never pooped in them (he has never pooped in the tub either) but they do fine with just pee. The ones we have are from Children's Place or Old Navy, and we like them just fine.

I usually just put my daughter into a pocket diaper without insert or a diaper cover. Let's face it: the swim diapers are only meant to hold back any solids, they do not absorb urine. A nice and tight watertight cover does the same job.
I have always asked my pool if that was ok, and at our pool it is.
In some places you MUST have a disposable swim diaper - it doesn't make any sense, but they require it.
If this is for use at home or lake/ocean, just get some watertight covers or pants.
Good luck.

I use the Bummis swim diaper and have been very happy with it. The one I bought last year still fits my daughter this year! I would have at least 2. I got mine at pinstripesandpolkadots.com

And some places do require the disposable type which I hate. If my mostly potty trained daughter had a poo accident I don't think the disposable ones would hold it because they get so saturated with water and sag off of baby. The cloth ones don't hold any water/pee just solids-just like they are supposed to. :)

I used the iPlay brand with my baby. They worked pretty well and were super cute. We actually started using them because we started an infant aquatics class and the school required cloth diapers and did not allow disposables. Well-fitting cloth diapers are much more snug around the legs and waist than most disposables. I don't think either type is supposed to hold in the urine but the cloth diapers were supposedly better at containing the poo. A little urine in the water is ok since urine is sterile but poop in the water is a big problem since it contains bacteria that can make people sick.

The only drawback is when they do poop in the cloth swim diaper it is a much messier cleanup. I would usually just throw the soiled one in plastic bag until we got back to the house and I could rinse it out and put it in the washer.

I love cloth swim diapers. I use them with both my girls. The ones we have are the Imse Vimse. They are super duper cute :) They h old in the poo just like the disposables and let the pee flow, just like disposables. But, they are reusable so you save tons of money.

I use cloth swim diapers. I buy mine from onestepahead.com. Just do a search. I buy the kind with velcro so that the sizes are adjustable, and they work great. I don't think they really catch pee - just poo (but I'm not completely convinced that the disposables catch pee either, since they get saturated the moment they hit the water). BRU also sells cloth swim diapers - they aren't in the diaper section but in the beach/summer-stuff section. Good luck.

I use them and all kinds of brands!

Check out www.etsy.com too. You can get them custom made size and color wise for about the same price as other companies.

Imse Vimse was fine, as was all of the others I used. The urine can soak through a bit, but the BMs have been well contained when we used them on vacation and were in them ALL day long.

I have 2 for each kiddo and that was fine. Even when we were in them all day, I just rinsed them (if they didn't have poop) and hung them out to dry in the shower and that was great.
