We recently became diary free and I was an avid milk drinker. I miss my nice cold glass of milk! I have tried goats milk but CANNOT bring myself to drink it. I like almond and recently tried coconut milk and LOVE it! I have read so many differening things regarding the nutritional value of coconut milk vs almond or rice milk and I wanted to know what you ladies thought! Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! I LOVE coconut milk! My 4 yr old who has never ever like the taste of milk actually asked me for a glass of it this morning. It was so wierd to hear the word "milk" come out of her mouth (when she was little she refered to nursing as nu-nuing). Thanks for your wonderful answers!

For the non-milk drinker, you have found the 2 best in my opinion. Almond milk has a nice flavor but coconut milk is the most like skim milk in my opinion. Also, coconut milk has a lot of nice fatty acids without actually being fatty. I think you can go with what you like in terms of flavor since both are healthy.

Coconut milk has the essensial fatty acids. Those are what FEEDS the thyroid and the adrenal glands and the brain. The brain needs fats.

I am a medical researcher. There has been an epidemic of adrenal and throid malfunction- even in kids- and one of the reasons is the move away from good fats like coconut and butter, and the move to margarines and manmade oils (all the liquid oils) which actually start the rancidity process soon after they are made.

Coconut milk/and fat keeps arteries clear, keeps teeth straight, keeps thyroid working, helps in brain function. using cocnut milk and virgin coconut oil will actually increase your metabolism and you will lose weight. coconut has anti fungal properties and helops fight hte yeast that is so prevalent in the american diet/antibiotic taking world.

It is SUGAR that causes weight gain and disease- not saturated fats.

I heard that coconuts have a type of fat that is easily used by the body as energy. It is great for the complexion and easily digested. The only thing about it is the lack of protein which can be found in soy or almond milks. Rice milk is okay (really good on Rice Krispies in the morning), but tastes a little thin. One benefit of soy milk over the other types is if you want to make a dessert like vanilla pudding it thickens well, unlike coconut, rice, or almond. You have to use more thickening agent with the other types which changes the result of the recipe a bit. Soy also works better for "cream" sauces. I usually have soy and coconut on hand for cooking. Try coconut milk ice cream...its REALLY good. Also tofutti makes a soy ice cream in Wildberry Flavor which it totally indistinguishable from cow's milk ice cream.

i love cow's milk (i drive an hour each way every week to buy organic raw milk which is illegal in my state, which makes me nuts). but i LOVE coconut milk. always have it on hand too. i just like it better than almond or rice milk (which are also good) and use it often in smoothies or recipes.
i just never developed a taste for soy, other than the creamer and eggnog which are surprisingly good.

A nutritionist came to church to speak to a group of us moms one day. She couldn't have promoted Coconut Milk any more than she did. She talked about how 1 cup of coconut milk has as many as or more nutrients than 2 cups of cows milk. So it's concentrated goodness. She talked about how it was sweeter than cows milk, so appealing to kids.

Suz T -- the nutritionist said that the best way to drink cows milk was to buy raw milk. She said that pasteurization of the milk kills so many of the nutrients we need from the milk. I just can't afford $8 a gallon that I hear it costs here in my area.

Coconut milk is really good for you. Yes, it has fat in it. BUT it is the GOOD fat that your brain desperately needs. I have found so many great ways to use coconut milk in a lot of recipes. I especially love to make our rice with it. Instead of boiling the rice in water, boil it with the coconut milk. YUMMY! Also, making smoothies with frozen pineapple and coconut milk is very tasty as well. Great, great product.
