Just wanted to know if any moms drank coffee while they were pregnant and had colic infants? I know that the recommended amount of coffee per day is 150-300mg while no consumption is preferred. I was just wondering if there was any correlation between the two? I have given up coffee 99% with the second one, and my first gave it up 100% but every once in a blue moon i'll have a cup....and boy do i miss it :-)
Hi J.. I am a coffee lover too. I have to admit I drank about 1 cup a day when I was pregnant with both my boys (now 3 and 19 months) and they didn't have any colic. Not saying that it was absolutely a good idea but I spoke to my doctor and read up on it and it just didn't seem like it was a problem to have a little bit every morning.

I drank about a cup of coffee a day my entire pregnancy (sometimes none, sometimes a little more), and nothing happened to my son in regards to colic or anything else. I don't know if this helps, but it was what my experience was! Congrats and good luck! ~M.

My doctor insisted that coffee was fine unless extremely excessive. Still, for my first, I didn't drink it. For my second, I said, "screw this" and drank one or two weak cups a day every day in the morning. My baby isn't collicky or nervous or anything. Have some yummy delicious coffee!

I cut back on coffee a little - but still always drank my normal cup in the morning - I believe it is the caffeine in it - but that can be found in numerous items. What is really funny is my first daughter was colicky - but I didn't drink coffee then - started a little later in life when I was pregnant with my other two children!

I drank probably one cup of coffee a day for each of my children (3), and they were calmest babies. One of my sons never cried unless he was hungry. I have a six month now and she is almost as good. They said at one time 1-2 cups of coffee is fine. Right before I had this one, I heard that now it might not be. The report said coffee may be linked to miscarriages, not colic.

I am on my third pregnancy and have not been able to give up my morning caffeine ( tea or coke) either. My son did not have colic, my daughter did. So, I see no correlation at all either because I drank about the same amount with both. I say if it is in moderation and it helps salvage the day then have your cuppa Joe!!!

I am vegetarian and my doctor was actually thrilled that I would drink a latte every morning - for the protein and calcium. He said the amount of caffeine in a latte is less than in a regular cup of coffee (I guess because the espresso shot is smaller?). Anyway, my baby is 8 months old and delicious. It sounds to me like the amount of coffee you're drinking is so nominal you shouldn't worry.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

When I was pregnant with my first son, all caffeine was completely taboo...I think I cheated twice during my pregnancy with a caffeinated soda and felt terribly guilty. The concern I had heard was low birth weight...the kid was huge and completely healthy. He had mild colic for a short period of time, but no biggie.
With my daughter (5 years later) caffeine was no longer taboo - in moderation. I did the math converting caffeine in coffee to caffeine in soda and followed the rules (my one craving with her was fountain Coke - and I NEVER drink regular Coke!). She was also big and healthy.
With my 2nd son, I pretty did what I wanted within the caffeine guidelines although significantly less than with my daughter and he too was good-sized.
I really think everything in moderation - and there's always decaf if you like the taste more than the caffeine. :)

With my first baby I gave up caffine totally, ate very well and did everything they tell you while pregnant - He had unbelieveable bad colic. With my second, I drank coffee, sometimes up to two cups a day, and she was angel baby. If you really miss it one cup a day is not bad. The recommendation is more for people who chug red bulls and pots of coffee all day. I continued to drink coffee while breastfeeding as well, though cut out the occasional afternoon cup, because it interferred with her nap time.

I always drank at least 1 grande coffee or latte during all 3 of my pregnancies. My oldest daughter was colicky. My 2nd was the best baby and the third will be arriving soon. I don't think coffee has anything to do with a baby being colicky. There is new evidence that coffee drinking during the first trimester can lead to more miscarriages. This study came out in the early spring.

I drank coffee every day of both of my pregnancies and neither of my babies had colic. I also had sushi, lunch meat, and glass of wine now and then (rarely, in all cases). And if I felt like having fish twice a week, I did it.
This is an issue I feel very strongly about. Women have been giving birth to babies a long time without all of these restrictions on our diets and activities. I'm all for being careful, but come on, let's be reasonable.
I hope you have a relaxed and enjoyable pregnancy,

If you can do it drink decaff. I drank decaff with both of my pregnancies and neither one of my kids had colic. However, I don't know if I was just lucky or not...there is supposed to be a little bit of caffine in decaf. I hope this was helpful.

I changed to decaf, but still drank two cups every morning...it was the oly way to get through my day (I also never drink soda, which is good). I can count the number of times my son has thrown up or spit up on my two hands (he's gonna be 22 months tomorrow). Check with your doctor though...you might have other issues to deal with and it would be safer to have a medical opinion.

Always check with your doctor about any nutritional concerns, especially if your pregnancy is considered high risk.

I only have one child and she comes with an easy temperament. I drank 2-3 cups of coffee daily at work until the phase of morning sickness abruptly stopped that, and then it was late spring onward (drank other stuff) and I don't think I went back to it until after I was done nursing.
I did receive a coffeemaker for home as I previously never drank it in the house. I had some and my daughter seemed fine, but the second attempt prompted an obviously caffeine induced bad day for her. It came suddenly and broke suddenly many hours later.
I don't think it mattered during pregnancy, although I did miscarry this January and that week the news was all about coffee inducing miscarriages. That was awful. The caffeine very certainly mattered during nursing.
I love coffee, too, on cool mornings.

Hey sweetie, Coffee and colic? Never heard of it. I too am an avid coffee drinker. I can't function without it. Anyway, I drank 1/2 caf while I was pregnant. I did limit myself to 2 cups per day. Or I would go strait decaf for the rest of the day. My son didn't have colic. As matter of fact he was perfectly healthy. I don't know if I just got lucky or what. But like I said I've never heard of a link between coffee and colic. Hope this helped.

Hi, J.!
I truly think that "everything in moderation" is a great rule to live by. For the most part, the restrictions on caffine are meant more for women at very high risk of miscarriage (ie: those with a strong history of it or those who have medical conditions making them more prone to it).
I drank some caffine with both pregnancies and while nursing both (I'm currently nursing #2, who is 10 mos old). One to 2 cups of coffee rarely effects a baby enough via breastmilk--it's almost always just a coincidence. If, however, you notice that your baby is effected by it (and it must happen at least 3 times in a row consistantly for it to be correlated), then you can always stop.
There is some fabulous info about this on the worlds best breastfeeding website: www.KellyMom.com That site is a Godsend!
Hope that helps some! Good luck & happy coffee-ing! :-)

I drank coffee with both pregnancies and had no problems. However, while breastfeeding, I HAD to give it up because the caffeine gave my sons have belly aches. The one poster who is the L & D nurse is absolutely right, caffeine can cause dehydration which in turn causes uterine irritability so just keep hydrated and enjoy in moderation.

Hi J.,
I gave up coffee 100%. In fact, if I did drink a soda (once in a blue moon) it was caffeine-free. And oh man, did my daughter have colic! I'm still not sure how my husband and I made it out alive! :o)
Any-who, I agree with the other mom replies. There doesn't seem to be a correlation between coffee and colic. In my opinion, it's the luck of the draw. Or horrible bad luck, if you ask me and my hubby...
Good luck to you!

Hi J.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I haven't heard anything about caffeine and colic, so I looked on Kellymom.com and thisis what I found:
<http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/caffeine.html> and <http://www.kellymom.com/pantley/pantley22.html> - they recommend reducing caffeine while breastfeeding as it can cause colic, but they don't say anything about during pregnancy. They do say that babies who weren't exposed to caffeine during pregnancy tend to be more sensitive to it while breastfeeding.
I would think that one cup of coffee a day or every other day would be fine.
Congrats again on your pregnancy!
J.

I never stopped drinking coffee with any of my kids and the first was an easy baby and the second not so easy and well I am hoping number three is another easy one.

Hey J. - I drank coffee with both my pregnancies and had no issues. I'm a L&D nurse and sometimes recommend to patients that an 8 oz cup in the morning may also help constipation as it is a gastrointestinal stimulant. Everything in moderation. Too much caffeine can cause dehyration which leads to contractions. Hope this helps.

I am not a coffee drinker, but I couldnt never give up my Coke. I drank Coke, usually 1 or 2 cans/day, with all 3 of my pregnancies. I tried to drink only 1/day during the 1st trimester and then increased it to 2 druing the 2nd/3rd, knowing the 1st trimester is the most important for development. I didnt have trouble with colic with any of my children. They have all been very healthy, very good sleepers, with no stomach issues.
I did have one misarrage, but I do not believe it was caffiene related.
Congratulations!
