Hello,

My son has a cold accompanied by post nasal drip. As a result he vomits quite often, about 1-3 times a day. I spoke with his ped and she said that it is normal b/c babies cannot blow their noses. Has anyone else experienced this with their child? This has been going on for about one week. - thanks

What can I do next?

My little one had a couple colds where she had a constant runny nose and drip. However, she didn't throw up. HE probably just has a really sensitive gag reflex. I used those bulb syringes to get most of the mucus out of her nose, to help her breathe and sleep!. and try propping him up on a pillow while sleeping so it doesn't drip down his throat. You can get those bulb syringes (buggy suckers we call them!ha ha) anywhere CVS, Babies r us, asically any pharmacy and I think even the supermarket in the baby section). Hope this helps, it is horrible to se lil ones throw up, there is almost nothing you can do about it! hang in there, hell be ok.

oh man!
my son has this problem occassionally (as recent as last night)
He starts coughing and can end up throwing up the last bottle he had.
I try to suction his nose and nothing comes out.
I can't wait for him to learn to blow.
He just turned one by the way.

my daughter had been sick when she was only a few months old, then around about 7 months...and was having problems breathing because of all the mucus. she would start to gag if i didn't get to her quick enough...but most of the time she was ok. i tried to pay close attention to when she looked stuffed, and i would "suck" the mucus out with an aspirator aka booger sucker. she really hated it, (made her gag while it was sucking the mucus out) but i knew if i wanted her to be able to breath, i had to do it. also, i tried to keep her head elevated. when she was up, i'd hold her as upright as i could while she was still comfortable, and when she was sleeping, i had her on 2 pillows. 1 thin adult pillow under almost her whole body, then 1 smaller one...like a couch "throw" pillow (also not really too fat) under her shoulders and head. i also never left her alone. we have a video monitor, so when she was in her crib, we could watch to make sure she didn't roll over and have the pillow cover her. good luck, i know it's hard to see your baby not feeling well. just keep it up w/ the aspirator, and head elevated a bit and it should drain enough to keep him from throwing up.

Hi Marissa,
My daughter was exactly the same way. The vomit was from the mucous because she couldn't blow her nose and she was constantly coughing. Everytime her allergies were bad, this would happen. This started from when she was 1 year old. At 2 1/2, I had enough and told the pediatrician. He referred me to a pulmonary specialist. After testing, she ended up having asthma. When her allergies were bad, it would make the asthma worse. He put her on Pro-Air (inhaler) and she has been fine for the past year. Her airways were so clogged up and the mucous had no place to go. Chances are, you're son probably just has a cold and it's been only a week, but if it continues, you should definitely see a specialist, I wish I did it a lot sooner.
Hope this helps.
Jennifer

M. - I found it helpful to use an aspirator along with a cold water humidifier. you can get one at the pharmacy - it gently pulls out mucus which greatly reduces the vomiting. Hope this helps!

Hello! My youngest daughter had RSV when she was 6 months. What I needed to do was use a cool mist humidifier. Drinking liquids help to bring down the mucus. Also, using an aspirator helps clear it out. There is also saline that could be used to thin out the secretion. You could find it at a drug store. All it really is is salt and water. I forget the portions, but if you would like to know, I'd be happy to find out for you. Hope everything goes well!

i don't think that he should be vomiting... or is it just coming back up a little bit. vomit would be like a bucket full and that's not good.
see if you can suction out some of it and raise the mattress for sleeping on an incline.

hope he feels better!
