My poor 5 mos old has gotten a cold - he's got a runny nose and a cough - no fever, but he's so congested. Any suggestions on what to help make my little guy feel better?

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

Colds are the worst for babies :(. Try rubbing some Baby Vicks or Little Colds Baby rub on his chest, back, neck. FOr some babies it even helps if you rub it on their feet and make them wear socks. Make sure you rub little amounts.

Also, try making him sleep in an elavted position (on a pillow or elevate the mattress with books). This will help him breathe better. Also make sure the room is not to dry, use a humidifier. Finally give him a warm bath. THat really comforts them.

These are things that really help my 6 month old baby girl.

Good luck.

Elevate the head of his crib, saline drops work well, too. Ask your pediatrician to be safe. Hope he feels better soon!

Hello B.,
I have two boys one 18 months old and the other is 4 months old. What has worked for us is a humitifier in their room and nightly baths with a bath wash with a little eucaliptus or some kind of menthol to help clear their sinuses. I found a great mild milk bath packet at Whole Foods in the baby skincare aisle or Johnson and johnson also makes one with menthol. Both seem to work well. They only downside is when you use the humitifier with the door closed it can make your paint/wallpaper peel if you do it for too long. But your five month old will feel better. Hang in there!

To help with the congestion, try running the shower. Run the water really hot so there is alot of steam and put the baby in the bathroom so he can breath it in. Also, there is baby vick's. I use the waterless vaproizers that have the eukaliptis to help breathing during the night. That seems to help alot. Other then that there really isn't anything you can do. They've taken all that stuff off the market cuz people were overdosing their kids.

He's really too young for any meds so to help with congestion use saline solution, drip it into his nostrils and suction it out with the thing from the hospital. He won't like it, but he'll be able to breathe better for a while....

The suggestions that Noopur gave are all great and I used with my dgtr at that age. If you use a humidifier - use a cold air one (they are supposed to be better than hot and less prone to germs) - if you use a hot one - do not use the vick's medicine in it - it's not supposed to be for infants from what I understand.

If his nose is stuffed at all - get some saline spray (little noses) and spray some up each nare - it makes them sneeze and clear the stuff out.

Other than that - just make sure he's still drinking. He probably won't quite as much - but as long as he still has a runny nose or eyes and wet diapers - you know he's not getting dehydrated either. And, of course, lots of love - my heart always feels so bad for those poor little ones when they get sick! Hopefully there's someone around for you when you catch this cold and he's feeling back to himself again!! LOL

Hi B.. They really don't recommend anything nowadays for colds, especially since all the baby cold remedies were recalled. If anything, mayb some benadryl. I always used a plug in vaporizer thing (sudacare i think it's called) and I swear by vicks vaporub!! they make one just for babies... also maybe some tylenol or aches. yu can also use some saline up the nose and teh bulb syringe to get the goop out.
hope that helps.. good luck!

You may want to take him to the doc so they can do a better safe than sorry test for RSV. My son seemed to have a cold and then he spiked a fever and when we took him to the emergency room, he tested positive for respiratory synctial virus (I hope I spelled it right) with a touch of pneumonia!!! Yah, we were surprised too. He had to spend two days in the hospital. Apparently RSV is fairly common, like a cold, but some kids get pneumonia from it.
Anyway, that is my suggestion. Otherwise, keep him elevated and give an extra helping of TLC.:)

Use a cold air humidifier in his room to help him breath. Maybe a little baby Tylenol for any aches and pains (check with the doctor for dosages). And keep in mind that if you use meds the cold will probably only last about a week, without meds it will last about 7 days!

In other words, all you can do is make him comfortable while the cold runs it's coarse, you can't cure it.

I don't know if you are breastfeeding but breastmilk is antibacterial and thins mucous. Express some milk and use a medicine dropper to put in his nose. It works wonders and the antibodies in your milk will fight the cold on contact.
