I didn't read the other responses, but I always took Tylenol cold. It was the only thing that would help me at all. I wouldn 't take the dayquil/nyquil.
Ugh, I'm getting sick! For the first time since my son was born. I guess it's good I've made it 6 months being healthy. I know I can still nurse while sick, but is it ok to take nyquil/dayquil type medicaitons while breastfeeding?

Here's what the Cleveland Clinic has to say:

Here's a list from babycenter.com:

Most of them have antihistamines in them and can decrease your milk supply.
I'd lean more toward natural things as so many synthetic chemicals leech into the breastmilk. Even if there are no short term effects, synthetics build up in the system and can wreak havoc later. Elderberry extract is great for colds and flu and is simply food so no problems in the breastmilk. Google it if you want more info. I used this and still use it regularly as it simply builds the immune system so your body will fight it off faster. An absorbable multivitamin will help too!
God bless and feel better soon!!!

I remember being sick and the only thing I used to medicate was Ricolas, just so I could calm down my cough and sleep. I noticed a drop in my supply, did a web search and found that other moms had the same problem. Not sure if you would even need cough drops, but I wanted to mention it as they seem so benign.
It will not harm your child... but may harm your milk supply for a day. Most will also caution to check for infant sedation - but over 6 months the danger lessens.
NOT to take:
Phenergan VC syrup, Primatene tablets, Promethazine cough syrup, Rynatuss tablets, Tavist allergy/sinus tablets.
Medications and Mother's Milk - Dr. T Hale, 2008 Edition
I have EBF my 7 month old and have taken this philosophy: most everything in moderation is ok. I try to use natural remedies when possible. When I have gotten a little sick, I took OTC meds in moderation. I do not feed my DD out of a bottle and nurse on demand. I have seen zero affect on my milk supply and only noticed occasional drowsiness in her when she was 2-3 months if I had to take some benadryl for allergies. I really feel that a mommy who feels well and is healthy is best-Providing that you arnt overdoing it with OTC meds and use them in moderation only when symptoms are approaching severe.
Boiled Ginger root, the hot liquid with tea and honey.
I avoided them. If you read the label, many will say not to take (obviously nothing with asprin). If you have questions about a particular medicine, as your pediatrician. I became good friends with my neti-pot and it really helped!
