Any suggestions on what I can give my just turning 2 year old son for his cold? He has a runny nose, a little bit of a cough, and is congested. I can tell he is not feeling well so I'm not sure if there are other symptoms he has that I can't see or hear. Any suggestions? We are using Vicks Baby Rub on him at night and during naps but I was wondering if there is any other cold medicine I can give him to relieve him from some of the discomfort.

What can I do next?

Hylands Homeopathic line is great and safe for 2 year olds. It doesn't work as good as real drugs - but it does alleviate the symptoms and it's the only thing on the market that I have found that says for ages 2+

Also, don't forget to keep him hydrated and that milk can exaggerate congestion so stick with clear liquids for a few days.

Honey is awesome for allergies.. But make sure it is local honey.
However, it is not allergy season.... so....
There is really nothing else to do for him other than what you are doing other than getting a humidifier for his room. Make sure he is drinking plenty of fluids.

1. Honey for the cough
2. Vicks on the feet works wonders for a cough.
3. Pick up some little noses saline nasal spray...its really helps to open up those nasal passages and is safe. The first few times you give it to the little guy might be a challenge - but it does help.
4. Tylenol or motrin for any pain or discomfort
5. Warm soup - my kids love the Lipton cup of soup with extra noodles when they have a cold. The warm broth really helps.
6. Lots of cuddles, movies, and quiet activities.

I have found Hyland's Sniffles 'n Sneezes 4 Kids to be a real life saver for stuffy runny noses. It is little tablets that just disolve in their mouth. Follow the directions on the packaging and they work really well.

I use Hylands Homeopathic medicine. I found it at Pick N Save, and I THINK I saw it at Target as well. I gave my 'just turning 2 yr old' 5mL (a tsp I think) last week and it took the edge off. You'll have to buy a separate syringe type thing to administer it though as they only give you a medicine cup.

Hope this helps.

1. you can put vicks vapo rub on his feet at night then put socks on. Works great for coughs. Not sure how or why but the feet absorb that stuff and it really helps.

2. Get him to the doctor to see if there is more going on. I give my kids nebulizer breathing treatments. Opens up their lungs so they can get out what's making them cough. He may also have a sore throat or ear infection that needs antibiotics.

3. Use a cool mist humidifier at night.

Call your doctor and ask if you can give him some. No meds without dr. approval first.

If he gets stuffy, I heard you can put Vicks on the feet. Somehow, its supposed to work. I haven't tried it, but I have heard from a few people that it does.
I always gave my toddler cold medicine. I know you aren't supposed to, but I did anyway. I have a pharmacist in the family and she would tell me what dosage was safe. We took it as kids and turned out fine...

If you live near a Cub they have an Ibuprofen Cold (their generic brand) that doesn't contain any cough medicine and is for ages 2 and up. You have to buy it at the Pharmacy counter but it works awesome!!

My doctor gave me permission to use Triaminic nighttime cold and cough medicine. My kids are 2 and 3 and have both used it (as needed) since about the age of 18 months. Check with your doctor first to get permission and dosage suggestions because it has really helped us a lot! My son especially tends to get a kind of loose, croupy cough every now and then and the triaminic knocks it right out within a day or two. No doctor visit needed and it really helps him sleep. Good luck!
