hey guys,

Got a lil situation and I'm wondering if you wonderful moms has any pointers. I'd appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

I had my daughter last week wednesday. I get released from the hospital on Saturday and come home to my 15 mnth old son...WITH A COLD!! Of course you can understand my concern. I already have to introduce the two, keep my son from feelign neglected, keep him involved, share myself with all of my kids, and so on.... But NOW that he has a cold, I kinda have to keep him away from her becuase i dont want her to get sick. I took her to her 1st appt yesterday and expressed my concerns. The Ped told me just to keep them separated and since my son is not fevering, dont give him any meds. So what else is there that i can do that will help him get better WITHOUT meds? he has the cough, the barking, running nose, and the oh so nasty snotty sneezes. What to do? I dont want him to feel like i am neglecting him because he is still a baby and dont understand. but he sometimes looks sad. any advice?

What can I do next?

I totally don't get the No meds comment. When we are sick with a cold we take decongestants to feel better. Why not him?

Vapor bath.. Hand the baby off to Daddy at night and let him play in a vapor bath. Put a humidifier in his room to allow the congestion to break up. While baby naps, have some reading time with your son. It should only take a few days to get over this... make sure you are all washing hands and using antibacterial.

Congrats on the new baby! It will be ok!

Do you have a relative or friend offering to help? If so, let them cuddle, change, walk the new baby while you give your first baby some one on one attention, he is the one who will feel neglected if you don't. Keep washing your hands and even changing your shirt to keep germs from spreading! Have hand sanitizer in every room for in between washing, not as good as washing but almost!

For my sons, I would grind up a little alfalfa, vitamin c and echinacea and put it in some juice.

You need to give your son some love - he is sick, has been displaced and missed his mama. I understand your concerns. If your son has a cold, there really isn't any medicine to give him - a virus has to run its course and that is what a cold is - a virus. To comfort him, let him play in a warm bath, everything that Sandy said already - and I highly recommend the Vicks plug-ins. I would put one as close to his crib as possible. They really helped me when pregnant and my infant as well.

Your baby will not know if she is loved over by others, like daddy or grandma, grandpa, while you give your son some attention. Your son will definately know if he isn't getting mama love. Wash your hands when you go to take the baby to feed.

Hang in there. It will get easier and the cold will be gone in a week.

Ultimate Aloe juice will boost his immune system and help him get better faster and will help keep him healthy. The strawberry kiwi tastes like a freeze pop so they love it. Here's a link to check it out. Completely safe for kids (all my kids take it) and all natural.
Hope it helps.

I just got this nose aspirator called a NoseFrida and it is awesome!!! I think it works so much better than the bulb kind, and so I would get one of those for you little guy. Also, cool night air seems to really help with the cold and congestion too, I don't know why. There was an article in this month's American Baby that talked about what to do for colds and when to call the doctor.

I hope you little one feels better, and your new little on doesn't get it. Congrats!!

Congratulations!!! Welcome to your new baby girl!! Personally, having just had my son 5 months ago, with 2 big sisters who are ALL OVER HIM - I have to say, do the best you can, use lots of purel and don't worry about it. Show both babies your love. My first 2 are 14 months apart. Good luck to you!
