I am desperate. I have come down with a cold (stuffy nose, sore throat, cough), but I am breastfeeding. Does anyone know of a safe/approved medication or method for relief?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you thank you thank you!! My Mother In Law picked me up some medication recommended by the phamacist. Bascially a generic version of Sudafed. I am already feeling much better. Thank you again for all of the great ideas and suggestions.

Organic apple cider vinegar, mixed w/ raw honey and luke warm water. I swear by it! My son has asthma so he can't take cold medicines like cough suppressants or decongestants... and b/c he has asthma when he catches a cold they stick around for a long time. I found out about ACV and raw honey and it has made a world of difference. You put one or two table spoons of ACV and one or two tablespoons of honey (for my son I do 1 ACV and 2 honey b/c he likes it sweet) Add however much warm water you need for taste... about a cup or so, however much you need. And drink that a couple of times a day and you'll be feeling better in no time. . Because it is vinegar the smell can kind of set you off, but if you use a cup w/a lid it's not bad at all. It actually tastes like tea... that's what we call it when we give it to my son.

Hi J.,

Check out www.kellymom.com. It's a website for breastfeeding moms. It gives a list of what is safe to take while breastfeeding and also has tons of other info. I hope that helps.

Anything homeopathic is just fine for sure (Zicam and others like it). From there, you should probably contact a lactation consultant who has a copy of Medications and Mothers' Milk by Thomas Hale. AVOID anything that has sudafed (pseudophedrine) in it... it has the effect of dramatically decreasing milk production. I have my copy in front of me right now and there are MANY pages of cold remedies, but a majority have pseudophedrine and state "probably safe but may reduce milk production. You may be able to access this resource on line by googling the title or author so that you can pick and choose. One thing about the milk-supply reducing effect of pseudophedrine is that the effect is temporary (but dramatic). If you have an abundant supply, than one dose might not be so bad... BUT, with a 6 month old (on solids?) your supply will usually be on its way down and easily compromised.

You may want to stick with single ingredient stuff like tylenol for headaches and pains, throat sprays and cough drops and teas for your throat, and a humidifier.

Good, good luck! And feel better

you can ask your ped about Coldeze (I think that's spelled right) I is an herbal cough drop you disolve in your mouth every 4 hours and it shortens the duration of the cold and eases the symptoms. I know it worked for me I have a heart condition and can't take any meds for colds but this works pretty well.. good luck and feel better

You can take wishgarden herbs cold remedy for pregnancy. It's a gentle effective remedy that will help with symptom relief as well as helping you get over the cold faster. And since it's safe for pregnancy, it's safe for breastfeeding.

I would think that any medication that you took while you were pregnant would be fine. I believe that you can take Robitussin DM. Most hospitals anymore have lactation consultants. Call your local hospital and ask to speak to them. Or your OB's office should be able to give you some info.

J., Seems you've already recieved many good replies and the advice about over-the-counter cold remedies and breastfeeding is important. I often tell moms to try homeopathy and the following for relief of nasal congestion, in particular and the headache that can accompany it. A few drops of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil in a cup of boiling water, then inhale the vapors. Be careful to close your eyes when inhaling the steam as both of these oils really can burn in vapor, but feel wonderful and clear the sinuses, thus relieving the pressure. You can do this a few times/day. Both oils can be obtained in a health food store usually. Tea tree oil is also antibacterial and antifungal. Hope this is helpful and feel better soon.

You can still breastfeed, you just need to ask your doctor what over the counter meds you can take. I remember my doctor telling me that Sudafed was ok to take while I breastfeed.
Although, all doctors have different opinions.. so your best bet is to call him/her up for sure! Feel Better!!

The most important thing is to drink plenty of fluids, that will help with your milk supply. When I have a cold I take Tylenol or Dayquil (just a little b/c it can dry up your milk supply a little). Hope you feel better soon!
