I am 15 weeks pregnant and I want to find out what the safest medication is to use for cold sores. I have in the past used Abreva but it is my understanding that it has not been tested on pregnant women. Anysuggestions would be helpful.

What can I do next?

It is actually safe to take Valtrex for cold sores while pregnant. My doctor prescribed it for me and it worked great! Good Luck!

I am taking Lysine (1000mg per day) tablets and when it was blistery I put drying camphophenique on it, It's been clearing up very quickly and I am happy. Pretty soon I will be able to kiss my husband again! :) Oh, also, since I seem to be getting them more frequently I have decided to continue to take lysine daily, but after my cold sore is gone I am going down to 500mg per day.

I am 36 weeks along and what I have used through out the preganancy is A Herbal Lip Ointment from Arbonne. I love It!
My doctor approved of it but you should always check with yours. I can send you every ingredient that is in the product if you want to know.

My cold sores would break out all over my lip and abreva for some reason just dried it out but never stopped it from spreading. The Arbonne lip ointment stops it and it doesn't spread!!!! There is also a dietary supplement to help support healthy lips which is an all natural mix of ingredients that included L-lysine. It is very similar as taking a L-lysine pill.

If interested check out my products on NicolesNaturalBeauty.myarbonne.com
Right now I am offering 50% off any product in July and August.

Let me know what you think!

I had a cold sore when I was pregnant in the 3rd Trimester and my doctor told me I could use Abreva. My cold sore was gone within 2 days of treatment. Have you talked to your doctor about the potential risks associated with using it?

R.,

I saw someone recommended Carmex - Caution: Carmex has pheonols in it which is cancer causing.

I looked up Cold Sores in my Wellness Guide and this is what it said:

Since the virus feeds on and excessive intake of the amino acid arginine, diets avoiding citrus fruit and nuts should be followed. Supplementation with the amino acid L-Lysine, found in most health food stores, is advised to stop the early spread of the infection.

In 1991 a clinical study by Mayo and Semesh, revealed the effectiveness of Melaleuca oil for the treatment of this difficult and recurring challenge. Dab T36-C5 on the lesions immediately upon dtectio. Repeat every hour until the lesion either disappears or come to a head. If it comes to a head, continue to apply T36-C5 once every 2 hours followed by Melagel or Renew Intensive Skin Therapy. For persistent or large surface sores, use Triple Antibiotic Ointment every 4 hours.

(Side note: T=Terpenin and C=Cineole the properties of tea tree oil. Only Melaleuca Alternafolia oil has this higher quality of T and C. The higher the T, the more therapeutic, the lower the C, the more penetrating. That is why it is so effective on skin.)

So that's what the book said and it has never been wrong yet. Feel free to check out their website at www.melaleuca.com and let me know if you want to test drive the product for 60 days risk free.

Since you are pregnant, I highly recommend their prenatals. They have a patent on absorbtion so they are highly effective - best on the market in my opinion. You can feel the difference. They have an awesome Prenatal Omega-3 which is great for baby's eye and brain development.

I don't recommend using medication when there is a natural alternative. Especially when pregnant. Best of luck.

PS I'm not a distributor, but I do like to help others the way they helped me. :-)

I used to get cold sores all the time and the best medicine I ever used was drinking lots of Welsh's grape juice. I have used Abreva and it didn't work as well. The other two things I have used and are natural I would still double check with your Dr. is Lysine tablets and Arbonne International has a cold sore "medication" that worked great. Hope some of these help.

Hi there.
I've found "Lysine +" to work really well. It's natural and doesn't burn like other cold sore remedies. It just works on healing the tissue. I use it all the time now (when I have a cold sore.)
You can get it at health food stores, and I found that Walgreens carries it now.
good luck.

I use the following remedy, Crush 1 Vitamin C tablet and open and and mix with Vitamin C 1 Echinacea caplet. Add about 2 Table spoons of water and apply with cotton ball. The pain is gone almost instantly and the cold sore clears up in a couple of days. If this remisy is applied when you since the out brake is just starting most times the sore will be stopped before it actually appears.

I hope this helps.
Blessings To you

I am 29 years old and I have suffered from cold sores my entire life. I have taken Lysine through both of my pregnancies and throughout my life. I buy mine from my Chiropractor, they come in the easy to swallow capsules. I assume that you all ready know but stay away from Orange Juice and other high acid food, always us a high SPF. chapstick in the sun. If your doc. okays it, Denavier works well. Don't use Carmex, the Camphor will make them worse. Good luck!

My dr. and pharmacist both said the prescription Valtrex should be OK to use while pregnant. I did and had no problems. It shortens the healing time dramatically and prevents it from getting huge and really gross. It's great stuff!
To dry it out quickly, I dab it with rubbing alcohol.

Have you tried L-Lysine? It is an amino acid that your body makes naturally, but some of us don't make enough to fight cold sores. My midwife recommended it to me when I was pregnant with our second. I took 3 or 4 tablets when I had an active sore, and then one a day for a while after. I also took 2 a day leading up to the birth of my baby so I was almost certain to not have an active sore to worry about passing on to my little one. I don't take it at all anymore unless I feel that familiar tingle but I don't even remember the last time I had a cold sore. Because it is an amino acid that our body is supposed to make naturally, what we don't need, our body expels. Best of luck!!!

The best, and safest thing I have used for Cold Sores, Blisters, Bug Bites and other skin irritations happens to be bee balm that I purchased at a craft store back in February. The balm is all natural, and is fantastic! The place I got it from is www.beesalve.com. The women who owns it makes this stuff, I swear by it and wouldn't use anything else!

When I was pregnant and had a cold sore I used Camphophenique. I called and verified with my doctor that it was safe. I always use Camphophenique and have had no problems - it's what I prefer to use. They have it both in the liquid and the gel.

I've used Denavir (a prescription med) that my OB approved while pregnant.

You can also check the pregnancy rating of medicines (OTC and prescription) online (just Google the name of the medicine for reference info websites--I think I've used something called medline.com before??). Any pregnancy class A or B drugs are safe; class C is thought to be safe but not enough tests have been done to fully confirm; class D or lower--stay away! (I've never actually looked up Denavir's pregnancy class rating, but since my doctor approved it, I figure it's okay.)

Cold sores are the worst...good luck!

Your doctor and pharmacist should have a book that lists all the medications (perscription and non-) and the risk for pregnant women. Ask your doctor to look up all the possible medications and choose the safest one. That is what I did for my allergy meds.

Also, have your doctor check the lactation version of the book when you are breastfeeding. A different medication may be safer at that time.
