Cold Sore Treatment for 3 Year Old

Hi Ladies,

My 3 year old has been getting cold sores since he was almost 2. He gets them when he has fever, but he gets them at the drop of a hat even when he has a tiny cold.

I have heard L-lysine is good for cold sores. I have some Super Lysine ointment for kids that I think does help some, but you can only treat it after it has already broken out and then he rubs most of it off.

Does anyone know of a lysine supplement for kids, such as a chewable tablet or liquid, or anything that has seemed to help your kids? I'm looking to see if I can prevent them or at least reduce the occurance. They seem to really bother him, plus they last for up to two weeks and I'm afraid it make him look contagious to other kiddos.

What can I do next?

This is a treatment, not a preventative, but it should help. At the very least, it's cheap and harmless.

Boil a few bags of black tea in a cup or two of water. After 5 minutes or so, remove the teabags (or strain out the tea, if you're using loose tea). Continue to simmer the water down until it's almost gone, but *don't* scorch it or you have to start all over again. Pour the tablspoon or so of remaining liquid into the top of a small jar. Leave it out to dry. You'll end up with a very dark brown shiny layer, possibly one that flakes a bit. This is your medicine.

To store, put the lid on the jar and label it well. As long as you make sure the medicine is always dry before you put it on the jar, it should last indefinitely.

To use, wet a Q-tip and rub it on the medicine until it turns brown. Dab this medicine onto the cold sore or canker sore. Experiment to see how often you should treat for best results. It works best if you catch the sore when it's just emerging, but it works nicely on "mature" sores as well.

I've heard lemon balm works well for this too, but I've only ever used black tea.

Good luck!

Hi D.,

L-Lysine can be found in capsule form and the capsule can be opened if you can't find a chewable. It's perfectly safe and effective. L-Lysine is a needed amino acid that helps the body grow properly and repair tissue. If the body has enough L-Lysine a fever blister won't grow (neither will any of the other herpes strains, ie chicken pox).

High grade tea tree oil can be used topically as well to heal and sooth.

Just FYI, a fever blister will not develop in a strong immune system. That's basically why they appear after a fever because the system is compromised. A good absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex is a good maintenance. A detoxed home will also help. Synthetics break the immune system down. I also believe that regular chiropractic care allows the neurological system to function the way God intended it to.

Hope this helps!

vitamin E oil should help make them go away quicker. just break the capsul open and put it on him. I would do it after he falls asleep so he doesnt rub or lick it off.

He most definitely IS contagious to others, so be careful. I use the L-lysine, a natural amino acid, with great results.

However, a foolproof cure is his own earwax. You can gently retrieve it with a swab or tissue and then apply as much as you can right onto the site. It is a centuries old cure and while no one seems to know why it works, it works literally overnight. He's a boy, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal to him, but if you don't overreact, then neither will he. There are no side effects or health risks with this, unlike ALL "modern, conventional" medicines.

We have had success with 1. milk of magnesia - dab it on with a cotton ball 2. honey - a natural antiseptic.
