I am jumping in late on this one but I've tried all the creams etc. and what works best for me is rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. If I rub it on as soon as I feel one coming it can be prevented and if I don't get it quick enough it's minimal and clears quickly!

Are they Cold Sores or Canker Sores? I am just asking, because the treatment of the two are totally different. Also Canker Sores are more common in children than Cold Sores. Cold Sores are caused by the Herpes Virus. Herpes Simplex I causes the cold sore outbreak & Herpes Simplex II causes the genital outbreaks. So once you contract the virus, you have it for a life time and have to treat outbreaks only. My question would then be, how did she contract the virus? If you are a person who has the virus, I am sure you are careful enough not to pass it to her. So are you sure they are not canker sores? Very few children have herpes outbreaks at age 8... Just wanted to make sure before you tried treating such a delicate skin with such strong medication.

Lyseine and vitamin C works the best. Talk to your pharmacist for correct dosage for your 8 year old.

Bistex, the creamy kind not the stick, works well.

My daughter gets them ever so offten and the earliest one she had gotten was at the age of 8 as well. I was told from the pharmisist to give her vit B6. So I did and 2 day they are gone!! but keep giving her it for about a week after just to make sure it is gone away completely. Now at the age of 14 when ever she thinks that she might be feeling one come on she takes a B6 and it never appears.

I hope this helps

Because cold sores are viral, the best things are those that help abbreviate the duration of the infection. But, there is no cure, only treatment.

I'd second going to a pharmacist and seeing that is recommended for a child her age. Generally, you want to dry out a cold sore. Products like Carmex are designed for that. Herpecin-L is great (l for lyseine). Abreva is also very good, but her age may be a factor in whether it's the most appropriate product.

Best bet, go to a pharmacy and see what you can learn there and how to prevent future outbreaks:

Nothing but a little time will heal the sores. They are a form of herpes and very common in some people..lots of girls get one at each menstrual period:-( Nothing at all life-threatening, but a great nuisance. Some people get relief, in that it helps dry them up sooner, but putting Camphophenique on them a couple of times a day (ask your pharmacist where it is in the drug store). It's an over-the-counter, sort of a minty-smelling oily liquid and has been used for eons for small wounds.

Lysine tablets help my cold sores go away much faster. I take 2-3 tablets in the morning and a night depending on how bad of an outbreak. For me if I take the lysine when I first notice a tingle in my lip and my lips being chapped I can sometimes avoid an outbreak completely. Also a product called Zilactin will make a clear barrier if the sore is open. It stings when you first put it on but it will stay on all day or all night.

You can get cold sores by sharing a glass or similar contact so if one person in a household gets them then they do need to be somewhat careful about spreading them.

She also needs to stay out of the sun as much as possible...the sunshine will help draw them out. Good luck to her!

Herplex - it's a chewable tablet that you can get at the drug store. It works wonders for me, I get them whenever I get sick.
