Hello Moms, I am in need of some advice. I have been watching my God son who is 2 1/2 months old and all he does is cry and scream because he has colic. It's driving everyone nuts! His mother changed his milk several times and nothing helps. I hold him, walk around the house with him, take him for rides in the car, sing to him, place him in his swing and bouncer and nothing prevents him from crying except feeding him. I kept him last night and wow I had a ruff night and now he is wide awake and I am tired. If someone can please give me some pointers on colic that would be great. I read on line that it goes away around 4 months and I hope this is true for all of us. Thank you in advance and have a bless day.

I lived with my niece when she had colic - same thing if I remember correctly. (She is 8 now, so it was a while back.) I remmeber that there was nothing that we could do but that it did eventually stop - around 3 or 4 months. Just hang in there and know you're not alone! My niece is a great kid now!

My daughter was the same way -- "Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD and book -- saved us. Around 2 1/2 - 3 months she just got better. After that she was an amazingly happy little girl.

My grandson who is 2 months old also has colic. His pediatrician said there are different things people can try which have a 50-50 chance of working. (Mostly it goes away around 4 months.) My daughter started using something called BioGaia drops which are probiotic drops that the pediatrician suggested. They are not a prescription, but CVS had to order them to be picked up the next day. (I had also called Walgreens.) They seem to be helping--he's on his second bottle of them.

Hi. There could be a chance that your Godson has acid reflux. Pediatricians normally do not like to treat infants for this until about 6 mnths which, trust me, I know is a lot of screaming. My eldest daughter had this and was very hard to consol until 6 mnths when they decided to put her on powder prevacid which we mixed with water. This did resolve the problem and now she is a healthy, happy 6 year old! - suggest you talk to your pediatrician about it. Sometimes it is a milk allergy but normally chanding to smthng like soy milk resolves this. I hope that this was helpful! Take care and good luck!

Hi Faythe,

I'm so sorry your Godson has Colic. My son had colic at 2 1/2 months and it does wear you out. A friend of mine suggested Baby's Bliss. It's Gripe Water. I gave him one dose of it and he was happy as a clam. You can buy Baby's Bliss at your local HEB Grocery Store in the baby section. Not only did it help the colic it also helped with the reflux he had as well has gas and poop. It has all natural things in it. I know a lot of people don't like Gripe Water but you will be amazed how happy this will make him. :) My son's Colic finally disappeared by the time of 4 months. You can give the Gripe Water straight or you can mix it in water. I mixed mine in water because my son had constipation issues and needed to give him water. Hope this helps! Poor little guy it's so rough on them and also rough on mom and Godmom!

I tried this home remedy on my boys and it worked for both of them. I found it in Rodale's Encyclopedia of Natural Home Rememdies. Get a garlic capsule (it looks like vitamin E) and pierce it with your teeth or a pin, squirt it in the baby's mouth and then feed him. Do this everytime before feeding for about a week. You should see noticable improvement. The book says it relaxes their GI track so they can pass gas easily instead of cramping. I had it around the house because it is good to take for colds. The only drawback is that the baby smells like garlic but the results are amazing. My babies went from sleeping 3 hours day or night to 10 hours by the end of the week. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Faythe! First, let me say THANK YOU to you for your services to our great nation!! You and your fellow soldiers are always on my mind and in my prayers! May God bless you all. :)

OK...now to your problem...I haven't read any responses yet, so I'm not sure if this has been thrown out there...but...

My daughter, who is now nearly 4, suffered from GERD - basically it was bad heartburn, reflux. She spit up ALL the time and huge amounts...she cried after every meal and her little body was tight. I KNEW she was in pain and something was wrong. Well, she was diagnosed with GERD and we used some sort of antacid formula on her. I honestly DO NOT recall what it was, but it worked great!! *If you need to know what we used, I can get my hands on it...just let me know by sending me a message.*

Now, when my son came along, I was prepared. When he started crying after meals, I knew he had a reflux problem as well. Now, his was not nearly as severe as my daughter's was. So, I went online and found a homeopathic solution. It's called COLIC CALM. Google it - but the website is: www.coliccalm.com.

It's pricey ($25 including shipping), but medicine for GERD is too. But, it's not too much to pay for a happy baby!! They shouldn't have to suffer after they eat! Poor things. :)

What happens is this: There is a little muscle in their throat that isn't quite mature enough to remain closed, keeping the stomach acids OUT of the esophagus. Stomach acid BURNS! It hurts...and that is why they spit up and cry.

I used this Colic Calm stuff on my son and he became one happy little guy! In fact, the first time we used it, after about 1 minute, he smiled at me as if to say, "Gee, Mom...thanks! That worked!"

Anyway, if your God Son is crying all the time, I encourage you to try this. If this doesn't work - they might even have some sort of guarantee. But, if this doesn't work, I would recommend a doctor visit -- ask for some sort of GERD medication. Also, look up the symptoms of GERD on WEBMD or any other medical website. If this is indeed what he has - and if the Colic Calm doesn't work - then a pediatrician should be able to help.

I should also mention that this Colic Calm stuff works for Gas pains as well and even mentions colic and hiccup relief! It says that it "temporarily relieves the symptoms of restlessness and irritability that can result from colic, gas, teething and gastrointestinal distress including bloating, stomach cramping and acid reflux."

Good luck and let me know if this Colic Calm works for you! Also, let me know if you need more info on the medicine that worked for my daughter. :)

Mu nephews baby had colic really bad too, (years ago) we found a product called DeeWees from a local family owned pharmacy. They still carry it, or at least they did last year.( I had to purchase some for my baby, he was getting tummy aches.)
It works & it helps them rest. Its like paragart (mispelled)but isnt & doesn't have that in it. If you message me privately I can give you the pharmacy name, its in Louisiana but you can get the Deewees mailed to you.

It could be reflux. Even if your baby doesn't spit up, she could still have reflux. What helped 2 of my 4 kids were drops called Kid-e-col. I got it at a viatmin supply store. They special ordered it for me. You can buy them online too. I noticed a difference within 2 days. They are catnip and fennel drops. best of luck.

My now 17 month old son had colic from 4 weeks until he was 5 1/2months. Nothing seemed to help. I was at a health food store and saw something on the shelf that I had not tried and decided to give it a try. It was a miracle! My little guy could sleep and was happy and did not feel terrible. It is called Colic Ease and it is made by WishGarden Herbs. You can order it online. I bought mine at the store in Pearland. You give the baby so many drops before/during each feeding. It helped immensely. Each bottle cost about $13 an you will go through 2-3 a month.... but when you are going through it with a little one, money becomes no object :) Hope that helps!
BTW My son also had terrible reflux and was put on prevacid and Xantac and neither one helped. It was not until the Colic Ease that he had any relief.

If it's REALLY colic (fussy in the evenings) gripe water (I bought it at Kroger, but you can get it at HEB and other places) worked wonderfully.

As others have said, it could be reflux. He may not be spitting up a lot, and have silent reflux/ GERD. Perhaps he arches his back or acts like he's hungry and then doesn't eat. He might think he's hungry because he's feeling pain but then it hurts to eat. After feedings he should recline in a swing or carseat or lay in his bed with his mattress propped up on one end. Laying flat makes the reflux worse. Feed in smaller amounts more frequently. My girls ended up getting on meds but were fine by 6 months. We have used Reglan, Zantac, and Prevacid. I didn't like the Prevacid as much as the liquid Zantac. Reglan worked wonders. They don't like to prescribe it because it's bad long term, but usaully reflux is outgrown and it's not needed long term.

Good luck and thank you for serving our country!

I found that my daughter did better while upright and in motion. I wore a snugglie a lot and she did great it that. When I needed to sleep I put her in a vibrating bouncy seat or a swing. She always slept great in those. Just be sure to always belt them in. White noise is another great suggestion. Try putting on the radio inbetween stations.

Buy "Fennel" seeds in the spice isle at the grocery store. It has a licorice flavor, and is a natural way to settle the baby's stomach. take one teaspoon and make a tea with it ( boil it on the stove for a few minutes in a little water, then cool it, and add a little sugar to it to make it palatable to the baby.straining the seeds, give it in a bottle, and watch the magic happen! This was the cure for my son, and he had terrible colic! It's an old Portuguese cure!

The thing that helped me the most is to hold the baby close and tight on my stomach. Her stomach on my stomach. I held the pacifier in her mouth to keep her sucking and from spitting it out to cry. I rocked her in the rocking chair hard and fast. Within about 10 mins she would fall asleep. I tried everything and this is the only thing that did the trick. 10 mins of crying was definitely better that 3 hours.

I understand your pain. My son had colic and it was so hard! Time is the best thing and your helping her is wonderful! Mylicon has some drops that help and you can also try Gripe Water. Both just help a little, but nothing will take it away. Try holding the baby on his tummy. Pressure on his tummy helps. Changing milk won't help. In fact, I would try to stay more consistent.
Keep helping her so she can get some rest. My son got better after 3 months so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Gripe water is what you need to help him find relief.. If you go to Whole foods you will find the homeopathic drops..

I am sure I will catch heck for this, but my SIL used to put her son in his carrier on top of the dryer while it was running. She would sit right next to him and it did give him some relief and allowed his to fall asleep. She did not know about the Gripe water...

We dealt with Colic here too and it is horrible. We tried everything - finally after a call to my SIL; she suggested we rty the vacuum - she'd heard it from somewhere and what did we have to lose. Well it worked. I turned it on and he calmed him right down. It didn't have to be in the same room so I placed it behind a door right off the living room. I used ear plugs and put the TV on mute for the close captioning. It lasted about 6 weeks.

Just to give you another potential scenario...my youngest was 'colicky' and I thought I would die from exhaustion. It turned out that her 'colic' was actually an allergy to all things dairy. She was allergic to the protein in dairy. I cut out all dairy and she was a new child in a matter of two days. I was nursing so that was relatively easy for me--not so easy with formula. Have them ask the pediatrician if there is a non-dairy formula they could try. Good luck!

Hi,
You have my total sympathy. I know how hard it is. My son had very bad colic, from very soon after birth until we got it treated. He just screamed, and every second feed it seemed he projectile vomited. He (and we) barely slept.
When babies scream with colic, it's because they're in pain.
You don't have to suffer this anymore. Please take him to a cranial osteopath. They are experienced in treating babies. Osteopathy is a recognized scientific discipline studied at regular universities. It is gentle and non invasive and perfect for babies, and IT WORKS! It manipulates nerve endings to gently fix the problem.
It took only 3 visits, a week apart, to fix my son's colic. He was a different baby.
They seem to grow out of it around 3-4 months because the developing body makes adjustments for whatever is causing the colic, but this does not mean the underlying cause goes away. You don't have to wait that long, and neither does he.
In my son's case a difficult birth had pushed the plates of his skull together, probably causing him very severe headaches, hence the screaming.
Make sure it is a cranial osteopath, not just an osteopath. There should be one in your area.
Good luck!

My son is almost 31 yrs old now but when he was a baby my MIL had me fold a receiving blanket long wise several times and then wrap it pretty snug around his tummy. Either put him on your shoulder and "burp" him or lay him on his tummy with this wrapped. It seemed to work for the better part. Also put baby oil on his tummy and use your thumbs and start under his ribcage and go down with slight pressure. Keep "massaging" . This also seemed to soothe him. Of course, now a days thay have colic drops at the store. Good luck. Just be patient.

Hello,
Make sure that the baby does have colic. When I had my first child I thought she was colicky too. I was visiting my mom out of town, so I took her to another Pediatrician and he changed her formula....well the problem continued. When we returned home we took her to her regular Pediatrician and he told me that my daughter was not having colic problems. My baby was born T. weeks early and he explained that her colon muscles were still very weak. Every time she needed to have a bowel movement it was painful for her. She outgrew the problem.
Make sure the baby gets evaluated or get a second opinion.

Best of luck,
Elisa

Oh! This may not be it at all, but... my friends baby was always crying and seemed to have colic, she took her baby to a specialist and they determined it had something to do with headaches and pressure in his mouth??? To help the lil guy she put her thumb in his mouth and applied slight pressure to the roof of his mouth and it soothed him immensely!

Been there, ended up with the soy milk, warmed. it worked. Is it also possible the this child is ready for cereal. That could also be the problem. To check on this put a small amount in with the milk in a bottle, you will need to open the nipple a little bit more because of the cereal. This worked for my son,the soy for my daughter. Good luck you may get some sleep yet.

My daughter had colic when she was this age. We could set the clock by it. It came on in the late evening, but lasted for hours. If you have gas drops they can be a big help. (Mylecin gas drops-walmart, target) Also, if we laid my daughter on her back and alternately pushed her legs up towards her belly, she was not as fussy. My dad's cousin called it riding a bicycle. You take their legs as if they are peddling on their back. It was a helpful technique. Colic does subside. We had a couple of months of it. You are so kind to help. I know you are all sleep deprived. Hang in there and sleep well.

The good news is most babies "outgrow" colic by 3 months I understand. Mine did. Although, I must say it was a long 3 months! The one thing that helped mine was what we called a "Jeri carrier". It held the baby in front so that the babies tummy was actually up close and tight to the mom's tummy. Then I would just walk. Usually our colicy time was from 3:00 in the afternoon until 7:00 at night. I lived it a climate that was good for walking outdoors at that time. So I was lucky about that. Nothing else worked! Maybe the tummy being warm, feeling secure in the carrier and the movement of walking. I dont know why it worked but it did.

Hope this helps and that the colic ends soon!

All that walking really helped my figure too!

I'm a huge fan of home remedies.....my grandmother's remedy was chamomile tea.....just warm no sugar and especially NOT honey.....honey can be fatal to babies when given under the age of 1.....should he get constipated you can add 2 drops of Karo syrup (white) into his formula or in the chamomile tea and it will make him poo...sorry, going back to the colic....the warm tea should do the trick...u can also lay the baby down on his back and bend his knees to his tummy and just move his legs back and forth towards his tummy and then straight and that will help him release any gas he may have....hope this helps....i dont know if your godson is also being breastfeed but colic has a lot to do with the mothers diet because it's transfered to the baby thru breastmilk....and if hes only taking formula then it could also be the milk or the bottle that is being used...i switched to the playtex w/the drop in liners and it made a huge difference because u are able to take out all the air out......well, these r a few tips that helped me hopefully they help u too.

My son was exactly the same. It was a horrible experience. It did start to get better after 3 months and completely went away after 4 months. Consider giving him more frequent feedings? You may even add a bottle of water every now and then if that's what soothes him. It should help flush out his system as well. You can add a drop of Karo syrup to the water for taste and digestion aide. As hard as it is, for your own sanity and his safety, you will have to let him cry. Put him safely in his crib and leave the area! It sent me into a depression due to frustration and lack of sleep. So, even if you're miserable every now and then - thanks to people like you who are willing to step up and help out to give mom a break - it is so necessary for the mom. My MIL did this for me and I would shudder to think of what could have happened if she hadn't.

My son did the same thing...and nothing soothes him except feeding and he was diagnosed with reflux. Now that he is on medication, he is a dream! The reason he wanted to eat all the time was because that is the only thing that made the burning go away. It may be worth a trip to the pediatrician to see if that is what is bothering your little God son. Please keep us posted.

My children never had colic but I have had many friends, whose children had colic. The one thing that I remember is them placing the children either on the washing machine or on the dryer.
