Dear A.! Try changing the formula. My baby had TERRIBLE GAS and pain... I tried drops, gripe water, warm water... Then I changed to SIMILAC SENSITIVE FOR GAS AND FUSSINESS...NEVER again she cried due to gas, you believe it? Besides that, she is almost 3 months now and sleeps 6h through the night. :) Good luck!!!!

Hi - we had the same thing with my daughter - it really peaked at 12 weeks- it doesn't necessarily have to be colic but some babies really have a hard time digesting and passing the gas. Since both were her issue we had to do a combination of a few things to get her some relief. We did Mylicon drops (a few in the formula) to help her pass the gas easier and followed her feeding with a small bottle with the recommended dose of Gripe Water (whole foods has the hylands and target/BRU has the little remedies)for digestion. then we had to sit her upwards in her vibrating bouncy to help soothe her. She was also on lactose free formula. there is also a good over the counter pro-biotic called Florostar (it is expensive but worth it) that might help if the issue is digestion related (good to have on hand becuase if you ever have to go on antibiotics this will help her avoid diaper rash which is a major side effect).

Avoid anis - there are some risky side effects and now a days there are several things on the market that are safer so why risk it. Be careful with cammomile tea if you have history of allergies in the family.

good luck!

Mylicon or paragoric. Paragoric has worked for years, down through the ages. Check the formula and juices you are giving, what can you change?

A fussy little one is no fun with trapped gas. Good luck A. k. I hope you find a resolve.

Check with your peds to be sure this is not something more gastro-intestinal.

A little olive or castor oil rubbed on the tummy in the direction of digestion (clockwise as you are facing her) only a drop...gentle massage of the tummy and also the feet will stimulate the system. Also, please let your pediatrician know of your concerns. I don't like medicating when a natural remedy may resolve the issue.
If the gas persists, have you been trying different formulas? I was taught to transition the formulas by adding the new to the bottle a little at a time...

Hi A.,

Don't give you baby anise. There are some colic remedies that include a little but the jury is still out if the benefits of anise out weigh the danger and in what combination. Unless you have a trusted naturopath that is prescribing a certain formulation I wouldn't use it. I'm completely into natural remedies but not everything natural is good....Anise will help colic but it is linked with brain damage if given too much and it also has a narcotic effect.....and we make licorice with.... :)

Antacids are dangerous as well as they get rid of the acid (that the stomach is supposed to produce for the digestion of food) and then the babies food won't digest and then the pain is exacerbated and the colic will even come back with a vengeance. Formula tends to cause these problems and sometimes you have to shop around to see which one won't cause problems. Goat milk usually always digests well.

Sorry I haven't given you much to help but I did want to give you the info about anise...

You can either try the anis but they say that can cause constipation or Mylicon which can be purchased over the conuter.

If you're not using any drugs or medications breastfeeding would be good... anyhow, anise as was suggested to you could be helpful for the issue you describe, while I'd also recommend a bit of probiotics, Garden of Life has a banana flavored probiotic supplement powder for kids.

My baby is 4mos and he also is gassy and has been since birth. I give him a teaspoon of peppermint tea (no sweeteners) and it seem to help. It's caffeine free

I gave my little one Gripe Water for colic. They sell it at Whole Foods. I would give it to her with a dropper and on days it was really bad I would just add it to every bottle. It was a Godsend. Also, an ounce of warm Caffeine Free (unsweetened)Peppermint or Chamomile Tea always seemed to help as well. My first had it for 12 weeks and my second for 9 weeks. My heart went out to them to see them so uncomfortable. I hope this helps.

Do NOT give her "anis". It is definately something our parents used but it has been known to cause heart problems. Do a Google search.

She may be lactose intolerant, try switching her to a lactose free formula. Good luck!

hi,

Your daughter may be ingesting too much air when she eats, or may be swallowing air at to other times leading to gas and colic.

Where are you located? In two weeks I am hosting a meeting for care givers in Port Orange--my guest specializes in eliminating colic. Perhaps we can help.

Take Care,

B.

I don't know much about Anise but I do know for sure that Mylicon Drops do work. I always made sure to keep a bottle on hand and the ped said that it was okay to give as much as needed. I would also recommend that you prop your baby on her tummy with her legs tucked under her. The trapped gas will "bubble" and come out much more effectively than if she's sitting on her bottom. I'm assuming she's on formula, so it could be the formula causing it. Have you considered switching brands? What does your ped say? I'd go out and get her some Mylicon drops first and see if it helps her.

Have you tried going on a lactose free formula? Similac Sensitive or some type of soy formula? I had to do that for all three of my boys.
Best of luck,

Hi A.,
I gave all 4 of my children the star anise when they were newborns and had colic. I boiled the star seed pods in water, just one or 2 per 2 cups of water and then gave it to them in a medicine dropper when it cooled but was still warm. I always boiled more than I needed because I breastfed and I drank some too. I usually only gave them 1 teaspoon. It works wonderfully and relaxes them to help them sleep.
I've never heard of it causing problems.

It may not be the "healthy green" method, but if she is gassy, you can always use those mylecon drops (or the generic brands)... it is just simethicone, which will dissolve the gas bubbles. Very fast relief...

Used it with my son, and worked like a charm.

Hi,

I understand how you feel. When my youngest had colic, my mom gave him a few infant drops in some warm water, laid him across her knees and did a gentle pat and rock to help the gas. Also during this time, she would sing a little song to him because he was so uncomfortable. Then we tried what we only knew to do, if it is colic for what seemed like forever, my husband would put on a undershirt and have the baby close to his chest, then he would pray like he was building a kingdom; during the span of time we would sing songs from our childhood. We also did alot of pacing around the house to find a comfortable rhythm for him.

After that, when he was irritable, we would do the same, and it worked.

try nutrimigen or alimentum formula and give it a good 2 or even 3 weeks to see if it's helping.
people will say try lactose free formula, but really lactose is milk SUGAR (breastmilk is made up of mainly lactose) and most difficulties come from the milk PROTEIN, not milk sugar. nutrimigen or alimentum have milk proteins but the proteins very broken down.

what will also help for the gas is PROBIOTICS. go to whole foods and go to the refrigerated section and look for the infant powdered kind and follow the directions on the bottle.
