Has anyone had anything perscribed to them for colic?

I have a two week old and we are having bad tummy issues. Tomorrow we go to the dr and we've tried grip water and gas drops. It was really bad the first few nights in the hospital, I think he was adjusting. When we came home he was sleeping great, now we're back tracking. Last night he couldn't sleep more than an hour at a time, he'd wake up with a painful scream. My diet is very bland-- however I have had milk a few times. I had colic when I was little, but my mom had a very stressful pregnancy. And my husband had a milk allergy. Didn't know if that would make a difference. He has also started spitting up after almost every feeding(this in the past few days). Last night he pooped, tooted, and spit up. I thought today would be easier-- but no such luck.

Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Chiropractor!!!!!!!!

Find a good one who works on children they will adjust at this age, baby could be out of alignment from position in womb or birth. My son was diagnosed with "colic" three adjustments and he was the happiest baby ever!!

My daughter was so bad. She cried without being consoled for months! - - her skin was itching from a dairy allergy. It would be at least something to try to eliminate dairy to see if that helps things. I FINALLY learned that my daughter needed to be soothed by gently rubbing her wrists, elbows and ankles. (Eczema), but she was too little to scratch herself! I hadn't read that in ANY baby book looking to help her Colic.

I think that fact of your husband having a milk allergy is pretty significant. A two week old is so young to be going through this. Could you go to an outpatient clinic today instead of waiting til tomorrow?

It sounds like your baby has GERD or Acid Reflux. Start by trying Similac Alimentum or Nutramingin. If that makes a difference, then you can try soy and see if he can tolerate it. My dd could, my son can't. They both had it, and they were both allergic/sensitive to the breastmilk. I couldn't have any dairy while I was pregnant, so I was on an elimination diet and they couldn't tolerate it. Your doc will give you zantac and/or prevacid. You can also give Mylanta as needed for immediate relief. Get some Hyland's colic pills, and those should help more than the gas drops and gripe water. If you have a bad spell before you go to the doc, give 1-3 ml of mylanta and see what happens, the cyring should stop soon. GL!!

This doesn't sound like colic to me...my dd had it for almost 4 months. It was horrible. She'd cry for 3-5 hrs every evening for no apparent reason. This to me sounds like acid reflux. My ds dealt with some of the same symptoms. Doc prescribed some medicine and it made a huge difference...and he grew out of it. Do you breastfeed? Once I cut milk out of my diet...also made a huge difference with ds. He seems to be growing out of the milk intolerance as well. Hang in there! I know it can be stressful. Just keep talking to your doc.

My friend had to take her baby to a chiropractor for his colic. After the fourth treatment he was 90% better. You can google it and research it.

My son was like this for the first few months. It was a combination of a milk allergy and sensory issues. First, try cutting out milk and see if that helps (I wish I had tried that). If that doesn't work, try switching to formula, bot hypo-allergenic as well as soy and see if that helps. My friend's baby was like this and switching to formula made a huge difference. For my son, the act of nursing was very soothing and he would not take a bottle. All babies are soothed by something whether it be swaddling, motion, white noise, car rides, swings, ect. Find out what soothes her. For my son it was a warm bath, breastfeeding, and being held (by me of course). He also liked the carseat and car rides. Don't worry about bad habits.

My middle child had colic and no I never had anything prescribed. I found that if I stayed away from caffeine, chocolate and milk and burped him LIKE CRAZY it was *somewhat* helpful...but to be honest it was a NIGHTMARE till I stopped breastfeeding and switched him to soy formula...sadly it took me about 4 months to figure this out...poor buddy! :(

I do not believe in colic, they cry because something is wrong. My daughter was happy as a newborn and then oneday, she just started crying, alot. The doctor kept saying maybe it is colic. She fnally gave my daughter regland and then prevacid after it quite working. She was a different child. Around 7 months, we were able to get her off it!

My son screamed for hours for the first four weeks of life. The doctor put him on Zantac for reflux at four weeks and within hours he stopped crying. He must have been in a lot of pain. He was still a fussy baby, but no more screaming for hours at a time. We were able to stop the medicine once he was eating solid foods.

If you are breastfeeding... keep up the gas drops and stagger with gripe water. I took my newborn that was colicky to the chiropractor at 5 weeks and after 3 visits it was AMAZING. You may want to almost eliminate any commercialized dairy products and if you MUST have dairy opt for the organic kind.

Spitting up is NORMAL for up to 8 months... the sphincter that stops the stomach contents from coming back up the esophagus is immature and isn't developed enough yet to keep the food down.

If you are formula feeding... I would recommend trying to get back to nursing. If not a chosen option, then seriously look into an easier digested artificial breastmilk alternative. Cow milk proteins are hard to digest for adults, can you imagine how hard it is for an immature and open GI system?

There is a DVD called The Happiest Baby on the Block. You can get the gist of it if you look it up on youtube. It has 5 soothing techniques for infants. They really worked well with our daughter.

My twins were both gassy and very stuffy and cranky. Exclusively breastfed. My twin daughter also would vomit a lot. Soaking her cloths and mine. We found colic calm which worked well and I cut dairy. After reading up on it it is pretty common for babies to have a sensitivity to a protein in cows milk. Cutting Dairy also helped my twin son with gassiness and stuffiness as well. Which is also found in goats milk, soy and some other things. This helped me alot.

Hope this helps. Also take note that most babies with this issue rarely have an actual allergy and after their digestive systems mature you can start eating dairy again. My daughter is 4 months and can tolerate me eating it now. They are still exclusively breastfed. Most formulas have milk or soy so switching will not help if this is the case. Even the lactose free ones still have the protein so not even those will work.

I second the recommendation for the happiest baby on the block but also wanted to encourage you to ask your dr. about probiotics. see

These studies came out after my daughter had passed the colicky stage but I would have tried it in a heartbeat! She had such terrible gas. It can't hurt. If it doesn't work then you can move on to the next thing.

If your breast feeding make sure that you are nursing long enough on each side to give him the hindmilk. I can't remember all the details on the digestion of breastmilk but the hindmilk is essential for the proper digestion, minimizing the gas.

I know its tough. My daughter cried (read screamed) an entire day when she was 3 weeks old. Thankfully my mom was there to help. It does end though hang in there!

Journal everything you eat and how your baby responds. On those days with NO dairy does your baby seem to be doing better? If that's the case you can be pretty sure that milk is the culprit. Otherwise I'd try everything that's been recommended and work from there. This will probably be a process of trial and error. Good luck!

I had twins and one was colicky so bad we tried everything for months!! Dont be afraid to try what people recommend. We were too nervous and it put us and our child through hell until we found out she needed a change form breast feeding to Nutramigen and Prevacid for her reflux and she was new child. GL!!
