My son will be 4 in August and my daughter will be turning 1. We're having one party for the both of them, but my son insists on having a Spiderman birthday. What do you think goes with Spiderman that's kind of girly for my daughter?

When my son was 4 and my daughter was 1, I did the same thing. We had a pink 1st bday cake for my daughter and an ice cream sundae party for my son (they each had their own sweet treat and we sang happy birthday twice). We did the sundae's in the garage and the cake in the house. In a way, it was like 2 separate little parties. The sundae party was a hit and he wants to do it again this year. I even bought root beer and many of the adults made root beer floats. You can absolutely do a Spiderman party. Just buy Spiderman invitations, napkins and balloons. :) The baby will never know the difference. All you need for her is a cake and some pink plates. :)
you could do spiderman for him and then like, Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends or even just ladybugs and butterflies for the "girl" side. Your daughter really wont care so I'd defer to the older one for spiderman.

I would seriously not worry about what you do for your girl-she will have no idea anyhow. If you want though you could keep with the insect theme and do ladybugs for her. Or Spiderwoman.
And I realize it is more fun to plan a 'girl' party but please try to get excited about your son's theme idea. Spiderman will make a cool party for him.
Most girls LIKE spiderman. But a 1yo isn't even going to have a clue. She's going to like the bright contrasting colors. If you HAVE to have something girly/cutesy... toss in some Mary Jane action :) A little baby fedora and a 'press badge' to get clipped to her.
For the cake you can do a double profile; spiderman looking one way, and Mary Jane looking the other.

Same token, if you can get a bunch of cheap disposable cameras for the party (since PP does photography), and some little flip notebooks (since MJ is the writer) you tie them both in again. A mini-scavenger hunt (kids taking pictures of the clues) that leads eventually to the cake would be perfect for the 4yo crowd.
But seriously, you 1yo is going to be absolutely clueless, and probably need a nap from overstimulation. Later on you can be more careful about making it "both" but at this point, it's your son's party. He's going to remember it forever. So if you're "splitting" make it 90/10 or 80/20 at this point.

If you're looking for something girly for the photos/scrapbook, just get her a separate small cake (or some cupcakes) with pink icing and sprinkles. And maybe a sweet little birthday crown and/or tutu :)
What about calling it a super hero party? Your son could still dress as spiderman but you could put on the invitations for the kids to come dressed as their favorite super hero or villain. Then your daughter could be wonder woman, cat woman etc. You could do face painting or get little rub on tattoos of super heros for the kids. Both boys and girls would like that.
She is 1. I wouldn't worry about it at all. We didn't even do a birthday party until DS was 4.
Your daughter, at 1, will not care one bit what type of party it is. If there's one year not to worry about it's this one. Let your son have his theme and don't stress about a "girly" element.

At 1 it doesn't matter, truthfully, she won't remember or even know what's happening. And at 4, how can your son "insist" when you're the one who'll purchase everything? If you give in that's one thing and your choice, but he has no control of the party.
My friend recently gave her 16 year old daughter the party of her dreams, a Spiderman party, complete with all the decorations, pinata, bounce house, cake and party favors. It was her softball playing daughter's idea, all the pictures are posted on Facebook, and the guest of honor and her friends loved it : )
I like the SUPERHERO theme idea. You could even make cheap capes for guests if they don't come in costume. Also, the craft store has plain masks. You could have glue and sequeins and felt circles and stickers for them to decorate. Adults might even like decorating a mask.
We have a boy three years older than our daughter as well (birthdays are 8 days apart). We did combine their birthday parties one year and we just decorated different areas for each of them...that way they didn't have to match. Our son had a small table with motorcycle stuff (and a motorcycle cake) and our daughter had a princess cake with Princess stuff at another table.
Our friends just did this as well. They had the boys in the backyard for a military obstacle course and the girls in the house for a dress-up tea party. They combined the food all on one table...the princess cake and the military cake on different sides of the same table.
And as others have said...she is 1 so she won't remember but it may be the last time you have a one year old and those baby themes are SO CUTE you might not want to miss out on it!
LOVE Sara B's suggestion for combined Spiderman/Miss Spider's Sunny Patch - perfect and completely age appropriate for them. Plus -she's turning 1, she doesn't care and she won't remember it. It's really important to him though.
My 3 almost 4 year old daughter who is a beautiful and "feminine" little girl is a superhero FANATIC. Her 3rd birthday party was Ironman, he is one of her top faves. Let it be Spiderman. No need for anything else, your son will love it. Little girls can love superheroes and still be feminine! Both of my daughters also love power rangers. As well as Cinderella, Snow White etc. :-)

I would go with Super Hero themed party. There is plenty of space for spiderman but the entire room wont be all about him! I would go with Wonder woman or another Super Hero Female. I would use as much Red and Bright Blue or aqua blue (almost the color of the mamapedia banner) as you can.

It doesn't matter if the go together. You can get a few packs of plates/ napkins, etc. that have Spiderman and a few for her, whatever you like, since she won't know. Just do a little of both. My sister has twins, and she just takes them to the "birthday store" and lets them pick out what they want of what is needed. They usually have 4 different kinds of things!
don't even worry about your daughter. she won't care at the time, she will have no memories of it later. 4 is a great age and he deserves to have his spiderman party. this might be the last time you'll be able to get away with it :)

You can mix anything you want with Spiderman. Your 1 year old won't care.
as the others suggest, "super heroes" would be appealling to both genders. How cute is a 1yr old wonderwoman? there is even a version of the super heroes as toddlers or babies, we can't think of what they are called?
You could also do BUGS for her (totally cute) and spiderman for him? give out antennae headbands, or wings? There is plenty of bug stuff out there, cute for her and gross for him? spiderman and his friends can do a bug search in the yard or house? big kids can have sillystring "webs"; serve ants on a log (celerty & peanut butter w/ raisins) and bug juice (koolaid). keep the colorscheme solid (red/blue) and she gets a ladybug cake or cupcake (red frosting w/ black piping gel & choco chips for dots).
most important is to have fun. you don't want son disliking sharing his bday or resenting sister ( i didn't get spiderman b/c of sister or mom said no).
enjoy your kids! they are most important!
