My youngest has astigmatism also, and has to wear glasses all the time. We first bought her an expensive pair (Disney princess), which she scratched horribly and then "lost." So then I went to Walmart and bought her 2 pairs there (the combined price was less than the price of the expensive first pair). I think the key is how the glasses are fitted. The lady at the Walmart optical center took her time and made sure the glasses had the proper angle over my daughter's ears, and apparently they are super comfortable, because my little one even wants to wear them to bed! My recommendation is not to get anything expensive, because kids being kids, will scratch them, drop them, throw them out the car window, etc. For the same reason, I wouldn't bother with the expensive treatments (anti-scratch, anti-glare, etc). Just plan on getting them to last for 6 months, and if they last longer, great. Definitely let him choose which glasses he wants, and do get 2 pairs (maybe one for his room, one for his backpack, so you are never without them). They do have some really cute styles for kids these days. Better than when we were kids!
