I'm pretty sure this is a bad idea, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Anyone here ever used command strips to mount baby gate brackets to a wall (can't use pressure gates because the opening is too wide)? The gate we have (North States, 3-in-1) comes with brackets that get mounted to the wall, and the gate attaches to the brackets. I hate the idea of making holes in the wall and am hoping there might be an alternative way to mount the brackets. Even typing this, I"m pretty sure the answer is "no," especially when it comes to safety. Even so - hope springs eternal. If you have ideas for ways to mount the gate without holes in the wall, please let me know. This is to block off our kitchen, not stairs.
PS - please don't use this as an opportunity to lecture me about safety. I really just want to hear whether folks have tried alternatives or know others who have, either successfully or unsuccessfully.

Very bad idea.
They make wider gates that attach to the wall, some have a swinging door so that you can get through without taking down the gate.
No, no, no. They aren't strong enough, and a baby pulling on the gate will pull it down forcefully onto themselves. Go with your first impression... Bad idea.
If you do a search for example, on Amazon, for "pressure mounted baby gates for wide openings" there are many options.
I would get another baby gate instead, that CAN be pressure mounted on your wide opening.
We had the Evenflo Soft N Wide Gate. For example. It was good.
And we had other pressure mounted baby gates at our stairs.
It was good too.
We never had to drill into our walls. And it was safe. Solid.
I think you're right. The only way to really secure a gate is to install per the manufacturer's instructions. That's how they test the weight/pressure that the gate can withstand. Relying on adhesive just wouldn't have the same effect. I know it's a pain, but patching up those holes is worth it in the end to make sure that your toddler doesn't end up dislodging the gate and toppling over backwards from the force when the adhesive lets go.
Actually, I think you could, as long as you realize that the baby will figure out how to knock the gate down when he/she's older. If it were at the top of steps, I'd say no way. But between 2 rooms - my kids figured out how to knock down pressure gates on normal size openings and while the gate falling scared them a little because of the noise, I've never heard of a kid getting hurt from this.
It will make the gate stand but any pressure and it will fall.
I have an open stairwell in the family room. The hardest thing was drilling those damn holes into the oak!! Wood putty and you can't even see them now. No one fell down the steps.
Step are far more important than kitchens. I had to put a gate up to keep muddy goldens out of the rest of the house. I drilled the holes too because it is so easy to Spackle the holes and I get bored with paint color easily.
My point, drill the holes, otherwise you are going to be picking up the gate constantly.
Oh, I don't think they make pressure mount beyond six feet. If your opening is six feet or less, they are out there. My kitchen was ten feet, had to drill the holes

Good thing about command strips - you can take them off!
So I would try two of the heavy duty ones and then lean on it the next day to see how it holds.
