HI ladies--Please help! My daughter has two friends who will be celebrating their first communion this spring and I would like to get a gift for each of them. For those of you who are catholic--what is an appropriate gift for this occasion? Thanks but the presbyterians don't practice this so I'm clueless!

Generally a rosary or small cross are good gifts for 1st Communion. The kids will get several rosaries; but, they generally lose them or break them. So, more than one is a good idea. I have three children. I made a wall hanging of all the wall crosses we received for both 1st Communion and Confirmation. It's amazing -- no two crosses over six celebrations are alike! Also, depending on where you live, Sacred Heart at Coit & Campbell is a good resource to find these items. They will have a nice selection of other gifts, as well.
I'd go to a Catholic store (in Carrolton off of Valwood near Mary Immacualate Church or in Coppell off of Sandy Lake near St. Ann)and look around. Books about Saints are always nice, or a book of prayers. They will get plenty of rosaries and Bibles from family members so I'd go another route. Maybe a cute bracelet or necklace.
My son received first communion and I think he appreciated cash more than anything! If you want to be traditional, a bible or rosary is nice. Also a crucifix engraved with his or her name and date of communion on it is nice.
Rosaries are nice gifts to give. Maybe even a nice kid looking crufcifx for their room. They come in so many different sizes and colors. I know there is a catholic store over in Carrollton somewhere.
Also a nice cross necklace would be good. I was trying to remember what I got for my first communion, but it was so long ago. You can never have too many rosaries, they are kind of like collectors items...especially since they come in different colors and such.
Good Luck!
My son received an adorable silver James Avery bookmark with a cross on it for his baptism. We use it to mark our place in his children's bible.

What I really liked most about my first Communion celebration was the money! :) From my God Mother I received a very special rosary, and that was nice. But from most others, I received a nice card and some cash. If you are uncomfortable giving money, go to one of the many Catholic stores in the area where you can find gifts appropriate for the celebration of this sacrament.

I am not Catholic but we had friends who were and we gave very nice special silver coins. There is a store in Plano off 15th/75 (toward downtown Plano) called Lone Star Mint. I buy Morgans, proof sets and things like that for gifts.
Just a thought.
