Completely Panicked - Water up the Nose :(

My kids were watering the garden with a spray nozzle hose that was placed in the "constantly on" position and full blast. My son tried to grab the hose away from my 7 y/o daughter and the water shot in her face and straight up her nose. I am in a complete panic over that brain eating amoeba that people got from using a neti pot - I can't stop googling and my whole body feels numb. :(( Yes I am always a panicker (and I just started lexapro 7 days ago but it is clearly not working yet) but this time it is really bad. It says it can take up to 2 weeks to see symptoms too. Ugh I just can't stop crying. :( Has anyone else's kid ever squirted the hose water up their nose with that much force?

What can I do next?

Relax!!!!!

Since it was city water from the hose there wouldn't be any amoeba's in it.

The amoeba’s you are scared of are found in lakes and ponds where the water has become very hot and stagnant. There have been cases in different areas of the US, but they are pretty rare.

Oh Good Lord..... Go get a glass of wine and a chill pill. Well not alcohol if you're on meds.

I sure hope you're not freaking your children out right now. That's just wrong.

What TV are you watching? Do you realize how RARE this is?

I just pray for your children if you're this paranoid on a daily basis. If so, you are creating paranoia in your children and that's just wrong.

Your daughter will most likely be fine. I am, along with the rest of those responding, quite concerned about you. You need someone you can call in these times of extreme panic that can help you rationalize, whether it be a therapist or close friend or family member. They can also help you keep you accountable to stay off the internet. No more Google!!!

Are you seeing a therapist? If not, you should be on the phone to your doctor to get a referral, asap. I hope you can get the help you need. I have two friends who deal with extreme panic and anxiety and it breaks my heart to see them so consumed by fear. I hope you find freedom and peace!

It's incredibly rare to get brain eating amoeba. Really, it is. If you have well water, it's a good idea to have your well tested. If you have city or county water, you are most likely (and almost definitely) in the clear, as that water is tested regularly.

If you are a panicker, I don't know that what I'm going to say will help, but I hope it will. Worrying about it will have zero effect. There is almost no chance that anything will happen to your daughter, and then you've driven yourself crazy and probably upset her a great deal all because you thought that maybe, possibly, but most likely not, something horrible was going to happen to her. Why do that to yourself or her.

Try to pretend that nothing is going to happen (which is by far the most likely scenario), and live your life.

Seriously?
Have a glass of wine.
Not trying to dismiss your fears but IMO, they are irrational.
If she is hurt, uncomfortable or acting odd? Get it checked out.
Otherwise? Stand down. It's fine.

dear gods above and below, my dear, you MUST get a grip. you are not only making yourself crazy, you are doing real and measurable damage to your children by this sort of hysteria.
bad things happen. bad things have always happened. and however sanitized and restricted you keep your children's world, bad things will still happen to them- but chances that something THIS bad will happen are almost non-existent.
brain eating bacteria are rare. damage from water up the nose from any reason is practically non-existent. you MUST stop crying, stop googling and stop this terrible over-reaction to .... to nothing. if you google every bad thing that could happen from every ordinary action in the life of a child, and then assuming worst-case scenario against all common sense, you're going to spend your life in a sodden heap of wreckage and teach your children to be terrified to make a single move.
i'm very worried about you, and very worried about your kids. my dear, you may need to check into a psychiatric hospital so that you can get the maximum help you need right now, today. this isn't something you can put off. if you are unable to make good decisions for yourself, have your husband take over. but for your sake and your kids' sakes, don't adopt a wait-and-see attitude. this is the sort of red flag that cannot be ignored.
please, please get help for yourself.

I suppose some people do but for me to go into a complete panic just seems like a way to make your child feel worse.
Kids need to see a parental figure at least LOOK like they are in some sort of control.

Yes, we've all heard
"When in trouble, when in doubt
Run in circles, scream and shout"
but no one should really act that way!

If you are that upset then go to an Urgent Care but people don't drop dead of brain eating amoebas every day and I've swam in streams and lakes and never had any issues.
Please calm down for your child's sake.

I would hope you don't have brain eating amoeba in your drinking water.... If that is the case you have bigger problems that should be addressed.

First of all, call your pediatrician's 24 hour nurse line and tell them what happened. They will talk you down and (hopefully) make you feel better.
Secondly, tomorrow morning call YOUR doctor's office and let them know what's going on. I don't know how long Lexapro takes to start working but if you are exposing your daughter to such frightening and irrational behavior (my mommy can't stop crying because she is afraid there are brain eating amoeba in my head!) you need to tell your doctor.
And I hope you are seeing a therapist for this extreme anxiety as well. Medication may help but in your case that might not be enough.

are you freaking out in front of your children? If so - please stop!! breathe...

You're using tap water. You DRINK the tap water. Are you sick? is anyone in your family sick? No. So please breathe.

Call your doctor and tell him/her that the Lexapro is not working and you need to figure out what will work.

It's OKAY.

Stop googling and go to Urgent Care if you are so upset you can't stop crying. Google is always worst case scenario. Maybe the visit to Urgent Care will calm your fears. I think she will be fine.

Unless this hose thing happened in Louisiana in 2011, I would let it go. I am guessing that there are still thousands of people that use tap water for neti pots. I am usually pretty on top of this stuff and I had to Google it to know what you were talking about. I will now start using bottled water when rinsing my sinuses.

On a side note, I had a nurse at a respected university hospital, that developed a nose spray device for infants, tell us it was okay to use tap water for this device. She gave one to us for my husband who had a brain hemorrhage. Trust me, if anyone is high risk, it's him, and he is just fine.

Please keep your worries to yourself, for your kids' sake!

Oh my gosh...you are so over worrying about this. It sounds like you must suffer from anxiety to a point that it is becoming debilitating. If you are panicking and can't stop crying this is really bad...and not a good thing to show your children. Your behavior is helping to shape the kind of adults they will one day be. Try not to show your extreme worries to them. Yes, my kids have sprayed the hose water up their nose, sucked in water in the pool, and while swimming in the ocean/lake. I never worried about it and they were always fine. That brain eating amoeba is super super rare...you have a much larger chance of your kids dying from riding in the car which we all do daily. Please talk to your doctor about your anxiety because it sounds like it is interfering with your life. My mom suffers from anxiety and now that she is getting older it seems to be getting much worse. She refuses to deal with it and it is putting quite a strain on our relationship. Not many family members want to deal with her anymore. I hope you can help yourself so that you do not stress yourself out so badly. Behavioral therapy can really help you.

In Murrieta you are on city water, right? You can rest easy that your city water is tested weekly, if not daily.

If there was any water sitting in your hose prior to this that MAY have had any mold or things growing, it was sprayed out long before your son go any up his nose.

My 4 boys are notorious for spraying each other in the face and even, I cringe, at the rear end (through bathing suits, not pulled down). You're fine. Your son is fine.

Like WW, I hope you are not freaking out in front of your kids.
I like that idea of a chill pill too, maybe take another Lexapro? Go take a walk around the block. You are stressing over a non-issue.

Please stop all this crying. You will teach your children to be hypochondriacs. No matter how worried you are, DON'T show it in front of your children. They are children and they deserve to have a few carefree years to not be afraid of the world.

Take him to the doctor, talk to the doctor OUT OF HIS EARSHOT and let the doc look at his nasal passages to see if they are okay. What you should be worried about is the force of how the water went into his nostrils. Unless your water supply is totally polluted, you shouldn't have to worry about water-borne amoeba.

Honestly, you can google yourself into a total frenzy. And if you are crying and crying over this, you should consider whether or not YOU have a problem, mama. I'm glad you are getting some help with Lexapro, but you still HAVE to hide this from your children. Obsessing over the health of your kids is NOT the same as normal concern. You sound like you've gone way overboard, and it will hurt your home life and your marriage, as well as your children's normal development if you don't get a handle on it. Making a child fearful of the world is a real mistake, and you need to address this in yourself.

Your kids would never be able to go swimming in swimming pools, rivers and oceans if this happened. When you swim, all kinds of water gets up your nose. I assume your kids have been swimming before?

Just don't use a neti pot.

Are you on town/city water? Then relax because it is tested and treated regularly. You can call your town's Department of Public Works or the Health Department to get a copy of the water report - it's probably on line. That would be much more productive and accurate than scaring yourself to death with endless Google searches.

Are you on well water? Have you had it tested?

What symptoms does your child display? None? That's what I would expect. The chances of there being a problem are less than being struck by lightning. Do you keep your kids inside so that doesn't happen? Or do you trust that it's so unlikely that it's not worth worrying about?

You are in California, according to your profile. The very few cases that occurred were in Louisiana, and while the causes are unclear, there is some speculation that damage to the water supply still left over from Hurricane Katrina was a factor. (If that concerns you, then write to federal officials and demand that they go in and finish the clean-up from Katrina now that 10 years have elapsed). There was also concern about insufficient chlorination in Louisiana, but again, the water report will calm your fears on that. Given California's water situation, I'm pretty sure that official agencies are on top of safeguarding the water supply.

There are bacteria and germs all around us. We all have to let our kids swim, play, go to school, eat, and be normal. In fact, the more you let your kids be exposed to things in small doses, the more they are going to develop strong immune systems.

I think the best thing to treat is not your child, but your panic issues. And I know that nothing we can say here will calm your fears even if they are irrational and baseless because they feel totally real to you.

All our kids have played with sprinklers and hoses, my little dog used to "attack" sprinkler systems and get water up her nose and down her throat, we've all gone swimming in lakes where these amoebas occur in minute quantities, we've all had our kids playing in dirt and sandboxes, and all our kids are fine.

I hope you get good results from your meds. In the meantime, call your child's pediatrician and ask for a list of symptoms and any info on amoebas in your part of the country and what symptoms to watch for. But right now I think the greatest risk to your children is a mom who is numb and crying all the time - you are so focused on this minute possibility that you are a much greater danger to them if you are driving them in a car while distracted or using a stove while unfocused. And no kid benefits from having a panicked mom all that time - so please focus on yourself and get the help that you need to be able to function in a balanced and calmer way. As they say on the airplanes, put the oxygen mask on yourself first, and then attend to your child.

Never happened to me but if I was as worried as you are, I would certainly pursue this. How is she behaving? Is she acting any different i.e. dizzy, disoriented etc? It's only 4:15 in CA right now so call your doctor, I'm sure a nurse would be available to help you. I feel sure she'll be okay, please just call your doctor.

Aw I'm sorry you're so worried but it's a 99.###-###-####% chance that your kid is perfectly fine. I'm a worrier too and I freak out when my husband washes my son's face in the shower and just squirts his whole face with the strong showerhead instead of having the water fall down so it doesn't go up his nose =P It's possible to get the amoeba through tap water but it's super rare. The odds are definitely for you in this case. Try not to freak out about it. Your daughter will be fine *hugs*
