Confused on Where to Start for Organic Milk??

the only thing about organic is that you pay more. It doesnt mean it's better for you. If you want to buy from a small farm near you. that's awesome, but otherwise, it's just suckering you into paying more and feeling superior.

You might want to check the most recent issue of Eating Well - they did a lengthy article about organic milk, small farms, etc. From the big producers, it said that Organic Valley (I think) was the best.

Also, have you looked at www.localharvest.org? You can type in your city (or one nearby) and search for local organic dairies. Just beware that some of them will sell "raw" milk (unpasteurized). We're lucky enough to get our organic milk locally for almost the same price as megamart organic, and we feel great about supporting the local economy and feeding our family organic milk that tastes better than anything the larger producers put out.

Organic milk means several things:
1) cows have not been treated with bovine growth hormone (BGH) to increase milk production.
2) cows are not treated with antibiotics
3) cows must have “access to pasture.”

Try this website. I recommend raw milk. It hasn't had all the nutrients killed out of it by the pasturization process. Study and read all you can. Then, choose a farm with clean milking practices. We have had dairy goats for about 4 years so that we can have good milk for our children.

I buy organic milk for my son and myself. My hubby says it tastes different and I agree, it does slightly. I am willing to compromise taste for benefits (it's not that much different in taste, he's just particular). I don't really like the organic milk that they add DHA to, I think it tastes much different. I just buy whichever brand is on sale. Usually I buy from Archer Farms (Target brand). I think as long as it is certified organic, any brand you get should be fine.
I don't agree that buying organic products is a sham. I try to buy as much dairy, meat, and fruits/veggies organic as possible. I don't live in an area where those items are super popular though, so I don't get as much as I would like.

I don't know if Shatto milk is organic, but it is local and very good. It is sold at Price Chopper and HyVee. We've been to the farm and got to see how they bottle and everything. It is very cool. You can even purchase some of the milk there. Good luck and God Bless.

365 Organic gallon of milk from Whole Foods is the cheapest that I have found here in KC. It is rated a 4 on the website suggested below.

Have you ever tried soy milk it's organic very yummy I use the brand "silk" in vanilla. Lasts for a while unopened and can be bought in bulk.

We drink Oberwiess milk and really enjoy it. We switched to it because we thought it tasted better than regular milk and they deliver it directly to our front porch. It is an extra benefit that it is also organic!

Good for you! Don't believe that "organic" is a sham. The only sham is companies like "Horizon" that don't actually practice organic dairy farming! I'd stay away from Horizon. Use the link rating the organic milks and see what you have available in your grocery stores, or local farms....
There are HUGE amounts of hormones in non-organic milk. My son developed body odor at around age 5, when I switched to organic milk--poof--no more B.O. That's enough proof for me. He'll love it.

We have used Horizon for my daughter, but recently Walmart started selling organic whole milk in cartons with their store brand. It's about 50 cents less than Horizon, so we've been using that for the past 4 months.

Horizon has coupons on their website that I got every once in awhile if you want to save a few cents off.

I'm not sure how to gauge which is "best" since to be certified organic is a pretty stringent process to begin with.
