My son is 5 1/2 months old. He has been badly congestion since he was born. He gets choked up and gags a good bit when he drinks his bottle. He is always either with a runny nose or stopped up nose. He is currently sleeping in a swing to keep him elevated at night. He is on Soy Milk. Also, he has had a cough for a good while now. We have been to an Allergist, and they have him on a Saline Rinse, Decongestant drops, Nasonex, Arithamycin, and Robitussin. I had him at 39 weeks with a scheduled C-section. And he was in the NICU for the first day with fluid in his lungs.

Has any one else experienced any of the problems with their baby, and if so, any suggestions or ideas to what it could be? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi A., My first baby was born naturally and still got fluid in his lungs. I tried the same drugs you are using and he just never felt better. If you suction it too much, you can aggrivate the sinus cavity and make it worse. I use a homeopathic treatment I get from the health food store here in Macon. But you can go online and find it too. You will not only save money, but there are not harmful side effects. The spray is natural and has no smell or taste. I have used it on my second child since he was 5 months when the pollen started aggrivating him. I hope this helps. the website I found is http://kingbio.stores.yahoo.net/ Sinus Relief is the name of the treatment I use for sinus congestion. You baby will feel a world better and so will you.

I would defienitly recommend to take him to a pulmonolagist... My son was born premature and had have cpr at birth. Since he has had constent problems with coughing and congestion. Finally after many doctors visits i decided to take him to a polminologist were he was dignosed with ashma and acid reflux and ever since he has been great he is now 22 mths and i havent had to take him to the doctor except for his well check. If you need a number for a great pediactric polminolgist please let me know.

Hi! I have a 5 month old son with similar problems. He is always congested, but with no cough. The doctor says that their passage ways in their nose are still so small that anything canmake them stuffy and not to worry unless he starts coughing a lot. I try to suction his nose before bed and before nap with saline. That usually helps him get to sleep. Sometimes for nap I will put him on his belly--I know bad idea but it does help him breathe better.

Hi A.!
I am sorry to hear the problems with your little guy...
has he been seen by a Pulmonologys? You may want to take him to be evaluated, a practice like this will cover any possible allergy or any weakeness in his system that is causing all this congestion. I say this because you said he was in NICU due to fluids in his lungs. I would cover all the bases since looks that this congestion is constant, you don't want to have him on this medicines for a long time either, he is really little still. You have nothing to loose.I can refer you to Ga Pediatric Pulmonology, they are in Atlanta, their phone is ###-###-####. I take one of my twins there, he has asthma. Anyway I hope this helps,I'll be praying for him...

Best wishes!

Poor child and mom! There has to be a decent solution.
I would start by seeing another pediatrician to get different refferals. See some specialist and try to find what is right.
I know that is a lot to go through but it doesn't sound like what you are doing now is working. I know you both must be miserable. When you find the right answer all those doctors visits will be worth it. How long has he been on all the meds.?
Did the same doctor prescribe all of them? Is he in daycare?
Does anyone else in your home have any problems like these?
I would try Mylanta and a different bottle with a smaller hole in the nipple. Did the doctor suggest that he sleep in a swing?
That might help temporarily but you can't do that long. What kind of rest is he getting? Try to find a friend who is a pediatric nurse that might offer suggestions to ask the doctor. I suggest this because a lot of doctors, like other professionals, don't like to say the other one is wrong. Sometimes it is the way we communicate sort of like if you go to get your hair done and tell the stylist exactly what you want and when they complete the job you asked for it is not what you expected at all. They ask what you wanted different, you communicate further and realize they did what you said.
So the key is finding a good doctor and communicating so that he understands clearly. Do you think your baby has had fluid problems for 6 months? best wishes

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. A congested baby is a very scary thing to deal with.
I have 2 boys, now ages 11 and 6. Both boys had issues similar to what you've described. My oldest was already diagnosed with GERD (Gastric Esophageal Reflux) because he was a preemie and followed so closely. We had the barium swallow test to confirm this diagnosis with him. He had to stay at a 45* angle at all times, when he sucked from a bottle I had to prop him in my lap on a pillow to get the angle right. He slept on a crib mattress that was rigged to keep him at a proper angle too (this was before they sold those awesome crib wedges you can get in the baby stores now). As long as he was at an angle the symptoms were minimized. It get even better as I added rice cereal to his bottle and made it thicker for him (I had to cut an X into the nipple to allow for a non-exhaustive feeding.) When my youngest was born he started to show symptoms of GERD and I began adding rice cereal and implementing the angle routines. We never had a confirmed diagnosis with him but I'm sure that my feelings were right on GERD being the cause.
I'd bring it up with the doc, it wouldn't hurt to implement the angled feedings with rice cereal and angled sleep.
HTH!
