hi celines, i'm in the same boat! my 3 yr old daughter is always constipated and she eats her veggies and drinks lots of water. but finally ,her pediatrician reccomended that i give her a fiber supplement, they're called "fiber gummies" and i get mine in rite aid. i give her 3 per day one after each meal and she's been going great with them! i hope this helps you out! the gummies taste like candy so you won't get a complaint from him! good luck! -M.
Prunes work wonders - I give my daughter one prune a day - and it helps to keep her regular. You could give him 2 a day - the consistency helps.
prune juice should work just fine but if that doesn't work, talk to a pharmacist to get something for immediate relief but don't just take those answers from the doctor. Tell them you want him tested. Don't give up cuz you are the only one that can fight for that child.
Just for an example my grand-daughter was very sick as a baby and she was being told that the baby was fine and she was just over reacting (vomiting, always sick and crying), after she told me that they seem to be treating her like shes stupid, I took over and went in and let them know that I was the one taking care of this child 99% of the time and demanded that they do something or i was reporting them. They did start ordering some test but before things really got started she ended up in the childrens intensive care unit and almost died. I immediately switched her doctor also. I know I have probably just scared you and I am sorry but want you to know how important it is to not take the answers you are getting. If you feel the need to switch doctors then do it.......Good luck to you and your son
Give him a fresh orange every day. And MORE water!
welch's grape juice works fast........or add some benefiber in whatever he drinks......maybe you should monitor what he is eating to see if he is eating to much bread, etc.
When my son is constipated I always make sure that not onl do I give lots of fruit< I stay away from bananas and rice as that will tend to bind.
Hi R.,
My daughter was constipated constantly too. I tried adding extra fiber to our diet. Yet she was still blocked up and could go a week without "production". I took her to a specialist who prescribed Metamucil. (Fiber that can be mixed easily into liquids). Even with a tablespoon a day, it was still once a week between eliminations.
Then one day we were jumping around to a dance video when she stopped suddenly and ran to the bathroom. Ta Da! I realized that vigorous exercise was the missing ingredient. I had been making her walk around the neighborhood but that wasn't vigorous enough. Now, when she's blocked up I make her exercise. It's been tough this winter with all the snow. She loves to wrestle and a good pillow fight on the bed sometimes works. Now that the weather is nice, we will be doing lots of family bike rides - whether my husband and I feel like it or not!
My kids have always had constipation problems. The only thing I have found that helps is yogurt, but not any yogurt. Activia never worked for them. The only brand that works miracles for them & me is Stonyfield Farm. Get a small container to see if it works. If so, it's worth it to spring for the big container & always have one on stock if your son has ongoing constipation issues. One thing I never realized is that juice can lead to constipation. They say to limit a child to 6oz or so a day. Good luck to you & your son.
All very good advise. I have been battling this with my daughter (2) for almost a year. She is a very good eater, lots of fruits and veggies, plenty of juice and never anything binding, so we were perlexed by this issue. We are finally using miralax everyday (half a dose) and it has done wonders. I think when we started giving her the miralax everyday (before that it was only when she was struggling) she was really backed up and went 3-4 times a day until it looked like what was going in was coming out within 24hrs (blueberries were my test). We are also giving her activia, prunes everyday, no applesause, bananas or rice except on rare occasions. These have proven to bind her even with the miralax if given too much.
Remember, you should always check with your ped before giving the miralax. And know that this is not like other laxatives, it doesn't make you go it only helps pull water into the colon to keep the stool soft. The other ideas will help with keeping him regular so you may need to try a few things to see what works. I have also recently added the wheat germ to her yogurt (only once so far).
Good luck
My child had issues for a really long time. One day we ended up seeing a new MD in the office and this is what she suggested. Apricot nectar and Popcorn. My son has no food allergies so we could proceed. I has surprised that it actually worked. A few months later a friend of mine was having the same issue with her elderly mother who had surgery. This also worked for her. Good Luck.
he needs to drink more water eat fiber and prune juice if you want to mix it with apple juice is good
Arizona Green Tea. Works like a charm.
Hi R., you asked for a NATURAL "medicine" and I have been blessed to find a natural tablet made up of 8 herbs that does WONDERS for constipation without the harmful side effects of laxatives. I use it my self and I know many people who swear by it. It is called Herb Lax and is made by the #1 Natural Supplement company in the U.S., and it is a company that can be trusted. See it here: http://superiorhealth.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sk...
This company also includes prebiotics in their baby supplements to keep their immune system strong, as I read you also had a question about that on a different post. See it here: http://superiorhealth.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sk...
I also have a CD about why children get sick often and what we can do to keep them healthier, which I would be happy to share with you. Feel free to contact me.
Hi R.. If you go to a natural food store or health store I'm sure you can find a variety of options. My store of choice is Whole Foods. My daughter was constipated last week and she's a little under 2 yrs. An employee at WF helped me find something called Buddy Bear Gentle Lax. My daughter loved the taste (like chocolate) and after 2 doses (and some prunes which she loves), she was back to normal. Lots of water too! Good luck!
Miralax powder at CVS has no taste so mix in a drink. Safe to use everyday for a few months until regular + doesn't need it.poor baby. Its sad to see your baby in pain. This really helps!!!
is he holding it in? becasue my 4 1/2 year old daughter used to hold it in all since till about 3 months ago. We had a major break through. We also tried the diet change ..no bread etc...
here is 3 things that changed our lives:
1) we found a homopathic practitioner- remedies work, they take a long time but they really work!
2) Emily Bowe (AMAZING) http://indigohealinginstitute.org/- helped emotionally with the constipation . She does sessions on the phone ..so worth it . Our daughter was suffering from this for so long, our whole life was around the poop issue.
3) mild laxative called Miralax- that helped with just keeping them soft until we got through the emotional scare of going to the bathroom.
Hope this helps!

I would push the dr to do some testing for digestive causes. I think Celiac Disease can cause constipation too.
Don't give him any laxatives. His body will go when it's ready. It could be his over all diet, which may not be balanced to the needs of his individual body. In order for the "flow" to be correct you need both soluable and insoluable fiber and fat. Yes I know it sound crazy, that is what my sister learned from LA weight loss. She got bound up on their diet and they said it's because there's not enough fat. They had her eat cooked apples, which can be prepared in a sauce pan or micowave. (Little bit of sugar, cinnamon, and wheat germ added makes them test good and adds soluable fiber to the insoluable fiber.) Don't forget to have him exercise as well. Exercising helps to move that gunk through you system quicker. (Marching is excellent exercise to get the stomach muscles working.) I know your doc. said fruits and vegies, but here's a list of well known poop helpers:
1. pistachios - make sure your child has no nut allergies before using them.
2. prunes
3. raisins
4. apple cider - careful, just a few cups a day can cause diahrea
5. apples
6. romaine lettuce - yes, vegie salads are great.
I give my four year old miralax. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I think a lot of it is psychological. I think he doesn't want to go to the bathroom at school and then he holds it in, which is what is causing the constipation. I have been meaning to take him to a gastroenteroligst to rule out any major problem, but usually the miralax works...
natural calm for kids it is a magnesium powder that you can get at your health food store. you put it in a glass of water or tea like camomile.
Have you tried prune juice? That usually works well.
Some of the fruits that help in constipation are Prunes , dates with warm milk. I normally give my son a dry prune in the evening.
One of my friend gives her daughter a 1/2 Tbsp castor oil and she says it works within 10 secs. If you want you can try that.
Did you try apple juice, I remember my mother giving us kids apple juice when we were little to help us go. 100% juice! not the cocktail stuff.
try miralax. you can buy it in any drug store. give him half a teaspoon.
