Hello ladies,

I have a strange question. My 5-month-old turns red and seems to struggle when he poops. However, the poop is never hard or even firm. Since he does struggle, would he still be considered as constipated? I'm just trying to figure out if I need to do anything to help him out.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms,

Thank you very much for your insight. It's just that we were at a party this weekend and some ladies witnessed his struggle. They started saying that he needs to drink more water, that I need to change his formula, poor baby, etc. So they got me feeling guilty that I may be causing his struggle. Thank you for the peace of mind :)

Doesn't sound like he's constipated at all. Most babies make a major production number out of pooping.

Nope-constipation is classified as hard dry poop. All babies grunt and strain when they poop. It's quite comical sometimes. My hubby and I used to crack up when our children would do this. Of course, if you're concerned you should run this by your pediatrician, but sounds normal to me. Good luck.

Oh, aren't the facial cues great? Our son (almost 4) still holds his breath when he's pooping and makes grunting noises. He's always been that way.

We have a friend whose daughter always squats and has since she was around 9-10 months old. That's how they know she's pooping - quite brilliant actually, and comical at the same time.

I think he's fine - he may just need to exert a little more pressure to pass his stools, but Kristi is correct, constipation is the inability to pass a hard stool for an extended period of time and is so excrutiating to watch your child go through.

I agree that he doesn't seem constipated. My friends son would do the same thing. Her doc told her that he needed learn how to poop. He was actually contracting his but and trying to push at the same time. Strange huh? So the doc told her different things to do to help him relax his butt muscles so he could get it out. He finally got it and has not had any issues.

Okay, many babies grunt and push when pooping. It does not mean they are "constipated."
My son was a BIG grunter whenever he pooped or had a lot coming out... he made all kinds of noises when pooping and his face would turn red.
But he was not actually constipated.

The consistency of the poop, as you said, for him, is not hard or even firm. So he is not constipated.

nope, not an issue at all if the texture is ok. Perfectly normal for them to strain and in fact it was/is that communicating that made parents potty train such young kids forty years ago.

Hello, is your baby breastfed or formula fed? My 3 month old is breastfed and she does the same thing. The doctor says it's normal, so I wouldn't worry. Especially if the stool is not hard. Hope that helps.
