My one year is has been mildly constipated for a few days now, she is pooping, just not well, and its tough for her to get anything out. Calling my doc is not an option at this point they dont consider her constipated till she doesnt poop at all for three days and id like to avoid medicine if possible. I gave her prunes yesterday morning, when she was on baby food prunes used to help out really well if she got "stopped up" from too many bananas, but this time they seem to have done nothing. she is kind of a picky eater she eats a few fruits but it weird about texture. Does anyone have any other suggestions of food i can give her to get her to poop well again?? Thanks

What can I do next?

BABY CALM has worked miracles for my kids (even me and my hubby sometimes!) It's amazing! All it is is Magnesium powder, but it works so incredibly - because it treats the cause, not the symptom!

Good Luck!

My daughter had major constipation issues as a baby. i had to take her to childs hospital it was so bad. They had to give her an enema because she was impacted. They put her on miralax. It just helps to keep the stool soft and is a very MILD laxative. It is not habit forming either. you can get it over the counter now. just add some to her juice or water. it has no taste. i tried it the first time i mixed it in water and i didn't taste it.

Constipation is nothing to mess with. just fruits and veggies alone are not enough. Also fruits contain sugar which adds to the problem.

Good luck

I would try some dried apricots, just a few or she will get diarreha. If she has some teeth give her some apples with some skin on it. the skin will help her poop. also do some bicyle exercises with her legs and rub her tummy in a counterclockwise position to see if that helps the colon. If she likes the tub sit her in the warm water. I know with my son it helps him poop when he is having issues. Try some apple juice also.

Hi there, I am a mom to an 8 year old that has suffered chronic constipation in the past, although she goes, she was so "backed up"...

Anyway, the best natural help would be any fruit that starts with "p" pears, peaches...etc. Also make sure she is drinking plenty of water as this also aids in digestion, and elimination.

Another suggestion would be baby yoga, works great...find a local center that offers mommy and me yoga! You will even benefit from it..great stress reliever!

And if you believe in chiropractors (I do with no doubt) they can help also...Yes, I have been taking my daughter to a chiropractor since she was 2 yrs. old and after her appt, within a few hours...whalllahhhh!!

If all else fails, I recommend Miralax (not sure if she could use yet, so check with the pharmasist or your pediatrician) the only draw back is you need to titrate according to your daughter. Start with a very small dose for a week, if no luck then bump it up and give for a week....do this until you find what works for her.

Hope this helps, have a great day!

Yes the DR. says 3 days. This what I did advice from Grandmom:

Give lots of water to drink. For snack give frosted mini-wheats, raisins and fresh fruit. Your daugther needs more fiber in her diet. My son developed this at and early age. The DR. should be the last resource unless chronic. The ordeal is awful for them to go thru. encopresis (not sure of spelling) The DR. will recommend miralax and direutics to use to get our babies to go poop. Raisin bread toast was a favorite as well as the other items mentioned above. I found that fresh friuts and vegetables and breads (not white or potato) that contain high fibers work really well and are natural. I know you are thinking why didn't I think that. Try salads. It is tedious but stick with it until you find something she likes and works. That worst that could happen is your daughter will eat healthy and there will be no limits on what she can eat, plus the whole family can enjoy as well.

Going the DR route will drive and baby crazy GOOD LUCK if need more info please contact me

Try increasing her fiber with bran flakes and dried apricots too. If this doesn't work you could try kondremul. You can also try stimualtion to the area - which is really not much fun either. good luck.

Some of family members and friends to me when my son was contispated to try putting a little bit of karo syrup or juicy juice harvest which has vegetable in it that might work mixed with water. It works wonders just a little put in bottle and sippy cup.
Good luck.

I've heard that kiwi fruit is really good for helping with constipation. Also pumpkin works really well too! I'm not sure that you would want to try this with a 1 year old (depending on whether or not you give her chocolate) but you can bake brownies using canned pumpkin instead of the eggs oil and water. You just use one family size box mix and 2 cups pumpkin. Follow the box directions for baking and you have naturally high fiber brownies. You can't taste the difference so this works great for picky eaters. Almost all kids love brownies.

As much fiber and water as you can get into her...I try to add ground flaxseed into foods as often as I can (when she won't notice) because that's a good source of fiber. I just put some in the pancakes we made this morning.
We use Miralax when it gets a little more serious. A little bit of that usually does the trick. I think it's now over the counter but I am not sure.

T.,

My niece has been going through this for the past 3 weeks now. She is 2 yrs old. She ended up getting dehydrated and had to go into the hospital for 2 days. It really can get bad quickly.
So First of all, try hard to get your daughter to drink fluids, water, pedialyte, gatorade, broth, etc... I have even heard of giving 1 spoonful of flat cola every hour if they don't keep down anything else, (don't know if that works personally). Make sure that your daughter is urinating normally..that is whatever she normally does for you, (ex: 3-4 wet diapers a day). Is the poop regular or is it hard or liquidy? These are things to keep an eye on, things that you can let your doctor know if anything changes.
Giving her a warm bath will help with the stomach aches if she is getting constipation aches.
I would continue to give her the prunes and veggies and oatmeal if she likes it and give little or no bananas or milk until she gets regular.

Good luck and i hope she feels better soon. L.

Buy All Bran and make bran muffins; eat whole grains, add apple juice to her diet, and lots of liquids. Dehydration can cause constipation, too.

My doc recommended giving my daughter, who is about the same age.. will be 1 next month,... applesauce or any other form of fruit because the natural sugars can help push the poo through her system. We always used prunes before too and it worked wonders but each kid is different so, maybe try some different fruits or even juices. I know that lately, since the summer melons are out and delicious, my daughter has fallen in love with honeydew and cantaloupe and when she eats these, she's good for a few good BM's that day or the following day. The water and the fiber will help push everything through. Hope this helps! Hope she can get a good one going so she'll be feeling better :)

Water and fiber are what speed things through the alimentary canal (intestines). Lots of liquids and fiber. Oats/oatmeal/Cheerios and lots of fruit juice. My daughter used to do the same thing--she wouldn't poop for about 2 days then produce something the size of a blimp (as in, "OMG, something THAT BIG was inside that little girl?!").

(Any time I feel that I'm having trouble myself, the first thing I do, rather than resort to buying lots of OTC stuff, is to just drink several large glasses of water several times throughout the day.)

If it's been several days for your daughter, she's probably feeling uncomfortable and fears how a big poop will feel, so sit with her when she's on the potty, help her to relax with slow exhalations (bring in bubble solution and have her blow bubbles), etc. Best of luck!

Hi T.! I would first of all make sure your little one is fully hydrated. Sometimes if a child/toddler is not getting enough fluids, that can cause constipation. If your child is urinating at least once every 3 hours then she probably is getting enough fluids. If not, you should giver her water or juice. You can also try foods high in fiber such as prunes (which you have already tried,)raisins are particularly high in fiber. In addition, fiber breakfast bars and high fiber cereals, bananas, apples, peas, and grainy breads are also a good choice. Hopefully this helps.

Sorry for reading this late both my kids have "poop" problems so we do yogurt with flax seed meal in. I did this on Thursday with my dd for lunch (cup of yogurt with about 1/2 -1 cup of flaxseed meal) and about 2 hours later she pooped. Apple juice never worked for my ds.

Apple Juice & raisins have always worked for my boys. Plus, if they get stopped up I cut back on dairy. Not too much milk, cheese, ice cream, etc. I think they're are also some gentle stool softeners for kids you can find at the grocery store if you want to try those. They do have Benefiber for Kids now...lots of fiber is good!

Good luck!

I recently tried Miralax for my 26 month old son and it worked wonders! Obviously you will need to use a smaller amount for her age. I would call your pediatrician and see what dose they suggest.

The concern going forward would be her fearing pain when making a BM and holding it. The Miralax should keep things soft.

Good luck.

If she liked the baby food prunes, maybe try that again instead of the actual fruit. I kept some on hand for a year or two after my kids started eating table food to feed to them a few times a week to combat constipation (my son used to get constipated often). I remember giving my kids fruit juice when they were constipated. I would also do exercises with them to get things moving - lay her on her back, bend her legs at the knees, push her knees up toward her body. We turned it into a game that ended in me tickling them. Warm baths helped from time to time as well. Good luck!

Take a day and try to avoid giving her constipating things like bananas, milk, apples and applesauce, but let her drink apple juice. Even though apples constipate them, the juice does the exact opposite. If she is really having problems pooping I'd let her have a glass or two of it undiluted for a day. I've done this with my son before. One day won't get her addicted to the sweetness of undiluted juice, but she likely will gulp it down and by the next day she'll be pooping like a champ (believe me, she will). If this is a regular problem, you might want to consider offering her diluted apple juice more often as a regular part of her diet.
