Constipation, Diet and Potty Training

My son is 2 1/2yrs old and is quite fair skinned and has very, very, very did I mention very sensitive skin. He has had several illnesses since birth that have required antibiotics. These illnesses as well as yeast infections and diarrhea have caused severe diaper rash almost constantly. We have tried a variety of creams and pretty much constantly use cream with zinc oxide on the advice of his doctor.

This continuous diaper rash has caused a greater problem. Because of his diaper rash, he doesn't like to poop. This causes him to hold back from having a full ‘movement’ and he ends up having very small BMs. Even when we change him within minutes, these multiple tiny BMs end up causing even worse diaper rash. I have had to give him MiraLax at times because the rash gets so bad that he refuses to poop at all.

When we change diapers it is a battle. He screams and shouts “Don't touch me!” and kicks and tries to scoot away (unsafe for both us). He screams and carries on when putting him on the potty saying he wants to use a diaper instead. All the books say not to discipline or be negative about BMs. I don't. I don't blame him for not wanting to be wiped when he has a rash. When he does use the potty he is always quite proud and prances about and says he is a big boy. We cheer for him and praise him for using the potty, but he still prefers a diaper (and thus the diaper rash) that causes him so much pain.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The Domeboro Solution has been wonderful! I did create a mixer of creams with Lotrimin, Desitin, miconozole and Aquaphor for a few days. And have been using Aquaphor after that. He has been off dairy and lactose (as much as I can police). My husband is changing job and therefore is changing insurances. After talking to the his doctor we are going to do an allergy test and probably see a GI speciallist.

Hey - my son is only 18 mos old, but he was having really acidic poop and yeast infections. We took him off of dairy and they cleared up almost immediately. One of the doctors in my practice said that a lot of diaper wipes can really pull the oils away and that the best thing is to use Domeboro solution (sold in packets at CVS) with super-soft paper towels. Good luck!

My daughter had sort of the same problem. When it came time to pottytrain she was scared and didn't want to go and only wanted to use a diaper. She started holding in her poop for days at a time until they got too big to come out and then it was just a never ending battle for months. But, for your peace of mind these times will pass. I would definitely keep the miralax in his juice everyday. I do not like giving my child medicine or anything that is not natural, but the miralax only adds water to their bowel movements and it helps everything come out "softer". Therefore, their mind starts forgetting to be scared of going to the bathroom. Also, I would cut down on dairy products and try prune juice if you can. That way the diaper rashes become less and if he still keeps having diaper rashes the only thing that ever worked for my daughter was called Triple Paste. It is a little bit more expensive, but it works so fast!! I hope this helps a little, and just trust me, that these bad times will pass and it will all get better!

H.,
My son too had very sensitive skin... I potty trained early. I basically just went "cold turkey" on the diaper issue except for night time and if Kyle had a poopy accident I didn't over react and helped him get cleaned up.

Have you tried to add prunes or apple prune juice to his diet? Adding fiber will help the constipation your darling son (DS) is experiencing.

I also used a warm washcloth to wipe when Kyle would have a rash. Ammends medicated powder helps too.

Not sure hoe else to help, but hope this does in a small way.

Hi-
This is an unfortuanate situation. It sounds like you are doing great, by not forcing the pooping or the potty issue. A couple of other things you could try are: if your child eats yogurt, encourage it! The good bacteria in yogurt help the diaper rashes and yeast infections. Also, this is a great diaper rash combo that a friend of mine swears by. Her son had horrible diaper rash and occasionally still does, and this is a good fall back.

Also, if you are up for it and don't mind pooper scooping... I have another friend and the only way they could potty train was to let their son poop outside. He thought it was cool, and when you squat the poop barely touches your "cheeks" so it doesn't cause irritation, and is easy to clean up.
One last suggestion, only use actually cloths with warm water. Baby wipes have alcohol in them and will just burn his bottom more and cause more inflammation.
Good Luck and I hope this helps!

have u tried using Aquaphor on his bottom ever? i would load it on very thick with every single diaper change. and, when you are at home and can keep an eye on him, let him wear no diaper at all for short periods. also, after a warm bath to soak his bottom, load the aquaphor again. all of these tactics - if u haven't tried them already - can help ease his diaper rash and pain...

I went through this with my 2 1/2 year old too. I use Aquaphor on his bottom every day, which has worked a lot better than zinc oxide creams. If it's really bad, I give him quick baths or rinses with warm water in the bathtub instead of wiping. Doing this for a while gives the skin a chance to heal. The yogurt is a good idea, too -- feeding him yogurt and putting plain yogurt directly on his bottom can really help with yeast infections. His reluctance to BM in the potty is a normal thing, though, even for boys with no rash. I wouldn't sweat that for now and just work on fixing the rash problems and getting him pooping normally period before tackling the potty training issues. With healing and time it might resolve itself to a great degree. I hope it gets better soon -- best wishes to you and your little guy!

Try using plain yogurt on his bottom. The cold will be soothing and yogurt has good live cultures to help heal him. I have used this and so have friends. It has to not have flavor in it.
Good luck,

Poor baby!!! Okay, the first goal is to get rid of the rash. You may want to go to the pediatrician just to make sure the rash is yeast and not bacterial. It could be either -- or it could have started out yeast and he could have gotten a secondary bacterial infection since the skin was open and diapers are pretty gross places. Plain old Desitin won't get rid of the rash if the rash is a yeast overgrowth. But I have a great solution I've used: Go to the feminine section of the HBC section at your local grocery store and pick up some miconozole (yeast infection medicine). Ask the pharmacy for a 20 dram vial and lid. At home, lay out a piece of wax paper and mix about half and half Desitin with miconozole. Now you have the yeast medicine mixed with the Desitin so it won't just soak into the diaper and go to waste. Put what you've mixed in the vial and use that every time you see his bottom. That should clear up the rash within about 3 days. If that doesn't work, he probably has a little staph infection -- ooooh, those hurt! You'll probably get a prescription for Bactroban for that. Just make sure they make it ointment form!

The Miralax is good. Ask the doctor about the amount to use. But you can use that everyday.

Poor kid. He's going to have to get the potty stuff worked out before he goes to preschool, though, so good luck! If you have any questions and want to private message me, feel free!

Good luck!

Hi H.,

I have a 2 1/2 yr old girl and she takes the vitamins that I sell and has great results with her poops. I sell natural baby products that may be able to help, I have a diaper rash cream and a vitamin that is full of vitamins/minerals but also a superfood component that has fruits and veggies that provide antioxidant support but also I really believe has made my daughter's poops so easy. I can give you a few days worth to try or you can order directly, if you are interested. One of my customer's son had a similar issue, but he was a bit older than 2 and was having compaction due to his fear of going to the bathroom at school. He started taking my vitamins and his compaction disappeared and no longer has issues! pretty amazing!
let me know if I can be of help.
Thanks,
K.

this is exactly what happened to my son!! he is very fair as well and platinum blonde. he is almost 20 months old and about 4 months ago, i stopped giving him milk products. i give him lactaid and his tummy is so much better. hes also allergic to chocolate which makes his tummy terrible, but my son would have a bloody bottom after pooping and when i would wipe him it was taking the skin off too. he would poop at least 6 times a day and it was terrible. he still isnt totally better, but his poops are down to about 2 a day and hes doing alot better. at least try the no lactose thing, it cant hurt and i bet it will help :) let me know if it works!
