Is she bottle fed or breastfed. Is she only going small amounts of hard poops? If she just isn't going daily it doesn't mean she's constipated as long as her poop isn't hard. If she is breastfed its normal for to go sometimes a week or more w/o having a bm. If she is formula fed it maybe the brand you are using. Some are very high in iron and can lead to constipation.
Edit: I wouldn't give any type of medication or home treatment w/o first consulting with my pediatrician.

What makes you think it is constipation? Is she on formula or breast fed? You should probably see your pediatrician.
Breast fed babies sometimes don't poop for days. If she is on formula then you should talk to your doctor about maybe finding one with less iron. Or she may be sensitive to dairy but you have to try eliminating things one at a time.

!!!You should not give your 4 week old any type of treatment or medicine or juice or karo syrup without talking with a doctor!!!

Talk to your ped first before you do anything. She might be fine. My ped recommended either Karo syrup or a very small amount of prune juice.

If she's breastfed, I ditto the girls, breastfed babies can go up to 6-7 days without having a b/m!

If the baby is formula-fed, then most likely you may be overfeeding her.

It's best to discuss with your peditrician to narrow down what the reason is! Not sure how young is too young to try things like juice or a suppository.

I would check with the pediatrician first before doing anything with such a young baby. My daughter had constipation around 4 months, and the pediatrician had me put a teaspoon of cranberry juice into a 4 oz. bottle of water, but that was at 4 months. Definitely talk to the dr. first!

I agree, it's very scary, but infants can go for a few days without BMs. Talk to the doctor before giving her anything. Also, if you are BF, maybe the La Leche League can give you some pointers for what to add into your diet that would benefit your little one.

Agreement with changing diet if breastfeeding (try drinking at least a gallon or more of water a day to "lighten" up milk for easier passing -- put a 10 oz glass next to your nursing area and guzzle as she does each time) or changing formula if that's the case -- when I supplemented, I used powders that were less "chalky" and more "powder/sand". Yes for doctor's call:)

Beyond that, maybe do the "bicycle" with her legs every hour a few minutes to get torso and bowels "in action" and also lie on her belly, supported across your belly and "swim" her legs that way as well for pressure on her abdomen. Works great for gassy times as well:)

Dear A.:

If you are breastfeeding it might be time to change your diet. If not it is time to change the formula.

This works most of the time.

If there is an extreme amount of tension in the family and the baby is around it this also can be the cause.
