Constipation in 4 Year Old

A couple weeks ago I took my daughter to the pediatrician because she was having really large, hard, painful stools. The doctor said we needed to get more fiber into her diet and really to push the water. Since then, I feel like I have been doing that, but it doesn't seem to be working. Now, she doesn't even go to the bathroom (except to pee). I don't think she's had a real bowel movement in almost a week. Her stomach doesn't hurt and she doesn't appear to be in pain. She just says she doesn't need to go. Some of it may be in her head. I know she was really scared about going to the bathroom and having it hurt. I just don't know what to do and I'm starting to get worried. The doctor said we could use Miralax but I went to the pharmacy and got Pedialax per the recommendation of the pharmacist. It's evil tasting and hard for her to get down. Since she's started taking it, she had one very small stool, but that was it. I don't know if I'm overreacting or what but a week seems like a really long time to go without having a bm, but wouldn't she be in pain if it were a problem? Any insight into what I should do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

She is probably not in pain or feeling like she needs to go because by this time, she has stretched out her bowel. You need to clean her out with an enema and then continue to use a stool softener. If the Pedialax doesn't taste good, you could use mineral oil. Just put it in some juice - the oil will be at the top so if she just drinks the whole glass down quickly, she won't really notice.

Fiber and fluid need to go together.
Too much fiber and not enough fluid can make things worse.
Benefiber can be added to almost anything she drinks - she'll never know it's in there.
Prune juice is good too.
Have her eat more fruit in general - apples, prunes, raisins, etc.
Go easy on anything that's part of BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) - it's great for recovering from diarrhea but you want to stay away from it for constipation.
Also make sure she's getting plenty of exercise - running and jumping help to keep things moving along.
Have her eat high fiber cereals - steel cut oats, Fiber One, etc.
Yogurt and/or probiotics might help her but if dairy binds her up then go easy on it.
Get the Miralax and follow your doctors instructions.

I"m sorry the pharmacist told you pedialax. You need Miralax. She should be taking an adult size does twice a day until she is cleaned out. Then she needs to go on time a day until she is no longer afraid of going by herself, and then you can see what happens. This is the recipe our Pediatrician gave us for our daughter at 3.5 or 4....and it worked like a charm! Miralax will not hurt the kids, I looked into it a lot! it binds to the water that it is mixed with, it does not taste like anything, and you DON'T have to TELL she is taking it! She will not be able to hold it in, so it has to come out, and she won't be able to stop it. This is what you need. If you need help or more details, please PM me, I know exactly what you are going though! Poor girl.

I wouldn't fool around with this. If she gets impacted, you're going to have a massive and painful problem on your hands. Don't wait for the pain. A week is unacceptable - so no you're not overreacting. She needs a fiber product and she needs it on an ongoing basis until this is resolved, and she probably could use a good stool softener now. Go back and follow the pediatrician's advice and be honest about using a different product. I think pharmacists know a lot but since this didn't work at all, you have to do more.

Also start baking more, like muffins with oatmeal and cut up prunes and flax seed meal in them. Put in zucchini too - that gives fiber and a lot of water. Try watery fruits like watermelon. Hide the fiber if you have to. Take her completely off bananas, cheese, rice.

Powdered miralaz or the generic. My son dealt with encoperisis when he was 5-6. I mixed 4 teaspoons into apple juice, more fruit and veggies in his diet, less carbs. It helped. Also, the doc said to get a bathroom routine going. For us it was after dinner - he'd have his dinner, juice, and then after about 30 minutes, into the bathroom with the ipad to sit on the toilet for 10 minutes. It's all about relaxing and rebooting. He'd be focused on playing and not pooping. It got his body into a nighttime pooping routine. We still occasionally (maybe 2x/week) add miralax to his juice, but things have been going fine.

Too much fiber blocks me up to the point I have to take laxatives and I have IBS with chronic diarrhea.

It's too bad you didn't listen to the doc...Miralax is wonderful and it's not anything like what you're describing here. Go back to the doc and get another prescription and get the other kind. Use it like YOUR DOC says.

Most of the time I listen to the pharmacist in all things but this one? He might have been trying to help but he gave you a different med/changed the prescription than the doc said and that's crossing a line in my opinion.

Put the Miralax in a small size pitcher of Koolaid, half the amount Koolaid makes, then keep it in the fridge out of her reach. Label it on top so no one else mistakes it for general drinking. The kids come in and grab the Koolaid after school and chug a glass down. It's cold, it tastes good, and they want more but I give it to them out of the pitcher of regular Koolaid.

Use Miralax. It is tasteless so your daughter will be able to get it down. My daughter's friend is taking it now. She was impacted last week so she has to use Miralax for a couple of weeks. This morning on the bus stop she told me she felt so much better. Good luck!!!

Mirapex has no flavor and can be mixed in juice. It may not take affect for immediately. And it has to be taken every day. If you're not consistent in having her drink it every day it will take longer.

My grandson had difficulty with constipation as a preschooler. His mom removed dairy products from his diet because they can cause constipation. The whole family drinks almond milk now. He'said 11 now and has not had difficulty for several years.

You could also try providing entertainment in the bathroom so she sits for 5-10 minutes and is distracted from the job at hand. Do this at the same time every day. Be patient and don'T expect results right away.

A week is a long time. I would call the pediatrician, fess up and do exactly what the doctor says. He or she may have a different suggestion now. And poor sweet baby, of course she is scared. It hurts!

When all this is back to "normal", try to limit the amount of chocolate, as well as the bananas and rice. Imagine how badly I felt when (in the way old days) my children ate a breakfast cereal made of chocolate flavored rice puffs. (Of course, that should make me feel badly on so many levels!)

My daughter suffered from severe constipation as a toddler and young child. . My daughter didn't go for 22 days and didn't seem to be in pain. (YES I did call the doctor after 5 days). We were told to change her diet, that she was just being stuburn, etc.

Diet will help, but it's not the answer. Here's what worked, Miralax and mineral oil. The Miralax doesn't taste bad and it can be mixed in with any liquid, my daughter used water. Then we also gave her a few teaspoons of mineral oil, which is nasty. These take time to work, so don't expect results for a few days. You could also try a stool softener, but I would check with her doctor first.

Sounds like something that happened to me as a child. My father would take me to the pharmacist for a special drink which they mixed up and I would drink it. It had an odd taste but it not to the point where you could not drink it. In a day or so I would go.

Drinking lots of water is the main thing. It takes a while for all that liquid to go into the dried out feces to soften it to get it to move. Also you have to figure out what she is eating and not to help her go on a regular basis. Do you have nuts in the diet? They provide fiber to help and to lubricate. The type of nuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans and some peanuts. Also exercise helps to move things around and get things going.

Good luck with your child.
