Constipation in a Toddler

I've tried everything that normally works. She's had prunes, and pears. That's what will normally unclog her. It's not working this time and we are going on day two. She is able to get a little out, but has been crying when she tries. Any suggestions on what else I should try? Constipation is not new to her, but normally it doesn't last this long, and she isn't as uncomfortable. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! After a terrible night of her pooping pea size pellets and crying about it, she finally went at around 11pm. Combo of pear juice, prunes, and Cracklin Oat Bran seemed to finally do the trick.

Try some white grape or, better yet, pear juice!
Peas, peaches, prunes, pears, pear juice and white grape juice and WATER!
Those always worked for us. Prune juice 50/50 with pear juice or white grape.
Good luck getting things moving.

No chemical laxatives or stool softeners! You have to work with the body and trust that it knows what to do. Buy some probiotics in the little capsules and sprinkle about 1/4- 1/3 of it in her juice 2 times a day for 1-2 days. In the future, keep some on hand and give it to her before she eats something you know that is constipating like for my son, it's bananas. Probiotics are good anytime you are sick, have constipation, diarrhea, on antibiotics, anything.

Call your pediatrician on this one! I'm sure it is not an uncommon problem.

Plenty of water. Kids Culturelle probiotics ( powered that can be mixed in any liquid) or Fleets pedi lax chewables. Be cautious with Miralax as it is a man made chemical and part of it's make up is used in things like anti freeze. I would start with extra water and daily dose of probiotics till she gets moving properly and then down to every other day of probiotics and see how that works for her. You can always stop the probiotics and start them back up as needed.

Sweet potatoes work too! Also try the activia yogurt, that is what my daughter eats and she loves it! If that doesn't help, you might have to resort to some miralax or a suppository! Don't let it go to much longer because it might scare her and she will be afraid to go #2 in the future. That will open up a whole new can of worms! Good luck!

Lots of water! But anything high in fiber. OJ and apples always help.

Miralax is great -- no color, taste, texture. We used it with our daughter when she was almost 3-yrs old. Mix it in her favorite drink. Ask your doctor how much (obviously less than the adult dose on the label). Our doc said it's OK to use for extended periods.

We struggled with constipation with one of our kids. She was breast fed and nursed so we never knew what was "normal" for her. As she got older and started eating food it still happened. We tried changing her diet and it didn't help. We finally took her to a pediatric gastroenterologist who said "it should never hurt to poop". He said not to change what she was eating because it's too hard to get toddlers to eat anyway. He said "there are people in other countries who survive on just rice and beans and they grow up just fine". He prescribed miralax. We would put it in a little bit of apple juice each morning. She is now 9 and I consider putting her back on it. The gastroenterologist said it is non-habit forming and is not absorbed by the body, it just passed through her system. The appointment with him was a monumental breakthrough for us.

we also had to do the Miralax. Now she is 5y and more regular, but when she gets to day 5, she'll ask for the 'go' juice (choc milk with miralax)
