Mr daughter is 3 and recently had the stomach flu which lsted 3 days. Since then she has been afarid to poop. The last time she had abowel movement was Wed, 4/25. So it's been 4 days now and she is in pain. I tried a glycerin suppository on Saturday, but that didn't work. She keps complaining that her tummy and her butt hurts...which I'm sure it does!! She has been eating very normal since Wed, lots of fruits and vegetables (she really likes them) I've tried getting her to drink prune juice....no go..she says "now ay Mom, that's yucky!!" Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

They have pitted dried prunes that come in a bag just like craisins. On the back of the bag there is a recipe for chocolate chip cookies. She won't even know that the prunes are in there and what kid doesn't like chocolate chip cookies?! Or you could try Little Tummys Laxative Drops.

Good Luck,
J.

Try Karo Syrup in her juice, or Marlax (SP?) is now available over the counter. It works good, just takes a few days. Karo Syrup usually works within 24 hours.

lots of fluids! try some apple juice that's what I used for my daughter when she had a problem going, but if it lasts much longer I would definetly make a doctor's appt. that way it dosen't become too big of a problem, good luck, hope she feels better!

You know I feel the same way you do. I have 2 1/2 year old daughter who often has those problems..pear yougurt (those Yo-Yo Baby or sometimes fresh pears can help...also apples or apple juice...you can even try white grape juice or fresh grapes.) Make sure that you get her to drinks lots of water.

I wish I didn't have to work, (I work FT). My daughter didn't go for the prune juice. If she is however complain of tummy ache I'd seek her pediatrician's advice and check up, fiber is also something she may be lacking.

Avoid cheese, bananas or any other foods that you think may make her more constipated.

Best wishes,
B.

They have pureed prunes in the baby food isle. Try mixing it with some yogurt and/or other fruit to cut down the taste. And drink lots of water. My son was constipated too, and that's what worked for me.
Good luck!

Try to stay away from foods on the B.R.A.T (Bananas, Rice, Apples,Toast.. It's used for kids with the opposite problem) diet, as those will make the constipation worse. Add in extra blueberries or peaches if you can.. or see if she'll eat a salad with you. If she's holding it in because she's afraid to go, then that's probably more of a problem than the foods she's eating. You may need to go in, and sit on the floor next to the toilet and read her a book or something to relax her.

I have used the suppositories and don't think they are as effective as the kid's enema. The enema works within an hour. Good luck and hope you daughter feels better soon.

My daughter has had issues with this and the doctor had me use Milk of Magnesia (which most kids don't like and mine gagged on it) so the next one was Mineral Oil & it works good and is cheap, just mixed it in Kool-aid. If you are using a sippy cup make sure it doesn't have the no-spill valve as it will clog because when you mix it, it will look like oil floating on the top BUT it is totally tasteless!

Hope this helps! Any others question's let me know, there is a prescription remedy as well that my daughter still uses if need be..

Dear A.

Try massaging the belly and then put warm watter in her belly . Massage inside to outside. This will relax the muscle and help her to do potty. It helped my 2 month baby.

Best of luck.

Your poor little one! My daughter now 7, has had this problem as well. She does not drink enough liquids, especially being in school now. The doctor also recommended putting a Tablespoon of mineral oil in her drink. Just mix with her favorite drink. Also when my daughter has this problem, I still give her Gerber Oatmeal from the jar. It is a real treat for her and it helps get and keep her regular. Hope your daughter feels better soon.

P.S. Have her take a favorite book with her when she goes to the bathroom, it will keep her mind off her pain.

My daughter won't drink prune juice either, but she loves to eat prunes. She calls them big raisins!

My girlfriend had this problem with her 2 year old son and the doctor told her to put benefiber in his food it is tasteless and it helps to keep him regular. If she stays constipated for to long it will hurt worst and make her strain more and probably really make her never want to go again. If worst comes to worse she may need a enema, I hope not!!! Good luck!
