I did well on the pill for a few months, but it would seem like once I was on something for a year or so, I would get breakthrough bleeding. I have now been on the ring for almost a year and I LOVE it. Haven't had any breakthrough, and I only have to think about it twice a month- to put it in and take it out. I would recommend it to anyone!!

You might want to consider the Mirena IUC. I have had one now for a year and love it. I really don't get my period any more, only a pink coloring about every 6 weeks or so and I only notice it when I go to the bathroom. Not enough to even need a panty liner. It is good for 5 years and is easily removed if you should decide on another child.

I just started on a new form of birth control as well called Seasonale because I was beginning to hate my Mirena. So far so good, and the best part is that you only get your period 4 times a year! The Mirena may be a good option for you, but know that there are some serious side-effects that your doc won't tell you about (but talk to the nurses and they will probably sing a different tune). I know lots of women that have put on large amounts of weight, have had acne similar to that of a teenager, and got horrible cramping. Yay for me, I had all of these. My doctor told me that the only one that could possibly be from the Mirena was the cramping, but the nurse said that they frequently see women with these same gripes coming in. The Mirena website actually says that it causes acne (Lord only knows why this doc thought differently!). Some women love it, but I have to say that I would try something else first. Good luck!

I had the Mirena IUD put in about 7 months ago and I really like it. It was a bit uncomfortable at first, but now I don't even know it's there. I was on different pills for many years and it's nice to not have to remember to do that every day and worry if I forgot. I'm 39 and mom to 3, so we're probably done. The Mirena is good for 5 years but removeable if we change our minds. Some I know have had breakthrough bleeding with it, but for me, after the first month, my cycles have almost stopped entirely.

Talk with your GYN about what the options are. Best of luck with your decision!

I was unable to take the pill after my 1st pregnancy because of phlebitis. I tried everything available. I loved the IUD. They are safe and wonderful. The part with the IUD long before my time was the fact that the string on the device was braided (exactly like the string on the Pearl tampons) everytime I see them I wonder how they got on the market! Anyway, with the strings straight and not braided it is safe. There my be other factors that may not allow you to have one but look into it. I loved it. If you do decide to have another baby after using the IUD, be sure to follow this advice. The IUD makes it a "hostile" environment to get pregnant. Your uterine lining is sloughy, after it is removed, use something temporarily, until you have 2 good periods ( 2 months) that way you don't have to go through the heartbreak of a miscarriage. I used it 2X I learned the hard way the 1st time, and was much smarter the 2nd.

Little about me married 23+ years with 6 children. 4 big kids 2 little ones. All mine though. I used the IUD in between #4 and 5 (8 years) and # 5 and 6 (almost 3 years)

If you do not want #4 call the doctor. this may be a sign your pills are not strong enough or you are not taking them right. if you take them the same time every day then the break through bleeding my be a sign of the pills not being strong enough. the other option is the IUD. there are tons of them out there like mirena. see if you insurance covers it not. i heard it is like $700 if you do not have insurance.

I do not know where Claire was going with the dog groomer thing...LOL....Maybe you do....LOL....anyways...call your OB, and talk about options. You know your body better than anyone.

I had the same issue after I gave birth and then went back on the pill. The doctor said the pill was not strong enough and gave me one that was a bit stronger and the break through bleeding stopped. Good luck.

Hello Tammi! I also used to take the orthotricylen. I used to use the NuvaRing previous to my pregnancy and since having my daughter, I have been on the Mirena IUC. It's wonderful! The first few months are frustrating because your period is kinda screwed up but once the first 3 months are over, it's great! I haven't had a period since and it's hormone free and good for 5 years! After 5 years, if you want, you can have the Mirena re-administered as opposed to having a hysterectomy. Check with your OBGYN to be sure what will work best for you!

I was on Noredette 28 for years (high estrogen) and I never had a problem, and in addition to that, my chest doubled in size (in a good way!).
Last night I happened upon "17 kids and counting" and I heard the Mother Michelle witness that they had lost a baby while on the pill. Not to scare you and maybe I shouldn't bring this up (I just found this out myself after years and years of being on the pill) but it is considered an "abortifacient". Just fyi...so depending what your beliefs are that may or may not bother you...no judgement...I had just always wished that someone had let me know...maybe something to talk to your doc about.

I got the Mirena IUC when my son was about six weeks old. He's now 2.5 and I've never regretted the decision. It was a painful insertion and I was crampy for a few weeks following, but my last period was January 2007 and that's the wonderful bonus that comes along with this birth control. Its good for five years and you can have it removed at any time if you decide to have more children. Mu insurance only covered part of it and my out-of-pocket cost was almost $200, but compared with what I was spending monthly on the pill and sanitary products, I definitely got a bargain. Hope this was helpful :)

My gyno said that breakthrough bleeding can happen once you've been on the same pill for a long time-- I guess your body kinda gets used to it, or something.

I use the Mirena and I love it... except for the breakthrough bleeding. It isn't enough for me to discontinue it, but it is a problem. I haven't had a real period though since I had it put in 15 months ago. It isn't totally hormone free (Paraguard, the copper IUD is, but many people have VERY heavy bleeding with it) but it is a very low dose of hormones that is thought to act locally, rather than systemically.

Having it placed was painful for me (for about 30 seconds, but WOW!), but I had never dilated (planned C- with my son). I suspect that if you had any of your kids vaginally, you would have less pain. Anyway, for 5 years, you won't have to think about birth control, which is the biggest plus!

I had a Mirena IUD placed May 2008 when my fertility returned after nursing my second child. I also did not like the permanent solution. I LOVE the IUD and have had zero problems with it. I don't have a period every month and if I do I spot for about 3 days and that's it. I had trouble with breakthrough bleeding on the pill to the point I would get anemic. Placement of the IUD was a breeze. My OB/GYN gave me vallium 1 hour prior to the "procedure". The placement feels like a pap smear and is just as quick and painless. I did not experience any bleeding after placement either. The only maintenance I do is check for the strings once a month to be sure the IUD hasn't slipped. The strings are soft and my husband doesn't feel them at all during intercourse (sorry to get graphic but that is the first question women ask me about the IUD!).
