Hello.

We're finally ready to finish out our basement, but haven't worked yet with a general contractor. If you've worked with one and like them also, let me know who you used. A referral is so good when it comes to contractors I've found in past places.

Also, if you have an electician and/or plumber you like, please share. Always good to have someone when the need arises.

Thank you for the help in advance!

What can I do next?

Hi, Michelle:

Do you have a plan on how you want you room to look?

Since it is a room, be your own contractor.

You and your husband, draw up a rough plan of where you want your
plumbing and electrical outlets.

Check with your better business bureau and obtain the lists for plumbers and electricians.

Compare prices with at least three.

Good luck.

Referrals referrals referrals. I have a heck of a time finding reliable workmen for our home projects. To the point I will never act as GC for any home project ever again. I have found that the only person the many, many tradesmen have will truely listen to/answer to is a GC. Little old me, the homeowner, is apparently too stupid to know what kind of ceiling I really want. IF I want a project done to my ideals, IF i actually want a tradesman to actually SHOW UP when they are supposed to, I have to get a GC involved. We just finished a very, very small bathroom project. Went through 3 plumbers, and the work was still jacked up. A 2 day weekend project ended up taking 3 months to complete. No exageration. And did I get the final product I wanted? NOPE. In the time it took to get the tradesmen to show up, a GC put a 5000 sq ft 2 story addition on the building I work in, from groundbreaking to occupancy. Talk about frustrating.

I will never, ever, ever act as GC again unless I plan to do the entire project myself. Including electrical and plumbing. Otherwise I will always hire a GC so I can hold his feet to the fire instead. I should not have to beg a plumber that I am paying a hell of a lot of money to show up and finish a job.

Sorry about the rant. Can you tell I'm frustrated? Anyway, my 2 cents is to spend the extra few bucks and hire a GC. He will be responsible to find the people, get them there, and make sure the work is up to snuff. Good luck.
