Put vicks vapor rub on their feet and cover with socks. Helps keep the cough at bay and better than any cough medicine I have found. I have a child that frequently gets coughs and I do this at night and again in the morning before starting his day.

check the label on the box to make sure it can be used on a 2 yr old (I don't have any handy) but Delsym used to be a prescription cough medicine and is now over the counter. Also, a little vicks on the feet covered by socks at night can help sleep through the night.

My Peds advice me not to give cough syrups to kids under the age of 5,it will effect their livers.I used to give my little one ,home remedies ,which is most effective every time for her.
In a bowl ,have 2 teaspoons of honey ,warm it little bit (Not too hot for her, be care ful) take half teaspoon from it & sprinkle little, very little pinch of salt & pepper,I mean very very little pinch of them & give her 3 or 4 times a day specially in the morning & before going to bed.My daughter's cough goes away with this method every time I remember.
Also at night apply little bit amount of vicks on her neck & try to keep that area warm .You can use vaporizer too.

Good Luck

Enter Ask Dr. Sears on google and it will give you the link to his website. If you click on the medicine cabinet, it will tell you correct dosages for almost any pediatric med. Just be sure not to overmedicate by looking at the ingredients so you can be sure that your child is not get twice the dose of the same medication.

Plenty of water, juice and lots of sleep, I've notice in the doctor's office they aren't prescribing medication syrups like they use too. If you can find a generic Tussin with guaifenesin in it, guaifenesin thins phlegm ( mucus), you want them to cough and get the mucos out instead of staying and going to the chest. For the night to help them sleep, I use Triaminic long acting cough syrup, it is a suppressant so they don't cough as much and allows them to sleep. And use a humidifier in the room, put a bit of neosporin around their nostrils and keep hands clean! Good luck!

honey helps (about 1/2 tsp) and so does sitting in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower

First of all, eliminate the foods that are causing mucus. That would be: All dairy products, and sugar. Then warm water with lemon. You can find wonderful homeopathic cough syrups at a health food store that have no side effects and that are effective.

You don't say here, but what kind of cough? Dry and unproductive or wet and productive? Cold or allergy?

If asthma/allergy I highly recommend seeing a specialist -- my daughter wasn't really helped when we allowed her pediatrician to prescribe and educate us RE asthma medications for her RAD and seasonal rhinitus (many ER visits later...):( We do many things differently for her when she coughs than for my son with his cold coughs...

If wet and productive, you can give decongestants or benedryl-style medications to dry the post-nasal, cold-cough combinations, prop-up when asleep so chest is raised. If dry and unproductive, you can give expectorants and use humidifiers or heat from shower or warm towels on chest and sinuses (dryer or wet) until productive, then above. Stand-bys for me are honey or lollypop to suck when awake, cold pops are good too, vicks always works for my son with some on chest and smidge under nose. If blowing nose a lot, then petroleum jelly on nose and lips for chapping. Wipe all your common-touch surfaces, like lightswitches and doorknobs, with Clorex in one swoop to stop reinfection:)

When medications are only 4yrs and up, I "cheat" and give based on weight or age percentage (give 1/2 dose or if in 80% weight give 2/3 dose) and I give as little as possible based on symptoms and reaction to medication. Then, I wait and see...

Good luck and if you want, you can email me too -- much experience with uncontrolled coughing:)

I've had great success with homeopathic cough syrups made for children (Boiron, Hylands). I also give tiny spoonfuls of honey periodically, which has also seemed to help. Good luck - I know how horrible it is to hear them coughing day and night.

I mix olive oil (about 2 T.) with a couple drops of eucalyptus oil and rub it on my kids feet, then put cotton socks on them. I swear it helps. You can also put the eucalyptus oil in the humidifier, or a couple drops in a warm bath for them, etc. It's great stuff.
Also, honey is great for a cough and sore throat. Just a little bit right of the spoon.

Call the Dr.-some of my kids were able to take Robitussin-and some were not-it made them hallucinate. It should probably have an expectorant.
