how to help quiet a cough in a 2 year old

Delsym or Musinex (powder or liquid). I've never found the others to be useful.
Our doctor actually suggested a spoonful of honey. My daughter hated the taste at first. It helped to have a chaser, like a glass of water. This worked to quiet her cough quickly during the night, but it was sticky and sometimes it seemed to make her sick to her stomach. She is still coughing and we are taking her back to the doctor tomorrow. Let me know if you find something that is safe and works for your little one.
I'm a fan of natural remedies. I use honey for my 2 year old, and have for the last year when she needed it. The darker the honey the better. The one that works best for coughs is Raw Buckwheat Honey. You can find it at Chamberlin's Health Food Store, that's where I buy it. It's very dark, almost like molasses and has a bit of a bite, but still sweet like regular honey. My daughter loves it, we eat it on peanut butter sandwiches too. Try a big teaspoon of that, it will sooth and quiet the cough. It works well for 2-3 hours and is all natural. If you need more of an expectorant, you can make a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of the buckwheat honey and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, warm in the microwave for 10secs or so to blend it nicely, it's also very soothing going down! Good luck and hope your little one feels better soon!
Do you have a nebulizer? Our children had enough run-ins with coughing that we just bought a nebulizer machine...the insurance company covered most of it. Call your pediatrician, see her and have her prescribe the treatment and saline to you. Ask how you can just buy the machine...trust me it is worth it! Also, a humidifier is good, there are a range of natural/herbal meds out there too. Delsym is great, but you can only use it with older kids. My doc has said not to use children's Vicks Rub on my 2 YO, but I have done it with all 3 of my kids and they are ok. In fact, my mom used to use it on me! Good luck! :)
A cough, in a basic sense, occurs for the body to expel mucous.
Or it is a reflex, to an irritation... ie: in post-nasal drip, a person often coughs because it drips down the throat and irritates it. And then mucous will come out of the throat.
For constant or laborious/deep/wheezy coughing, or coughing with other symptoms or fever, these are symptoms of something more.
There are cough "suppressants" and cough "expectorants" (which helps the mucous to come out).
take your child to the Doctor.
It depends on the age of your child, and IF they can take over the counter cough/cold syrups.
Take care,
Susan
you should not give cough syrup to any kid under 6! go natural. go in the bathroom, let the steam build up and have fun in there. humidifiers are great. honey works. go to the natural food store and purchase some elderberry syrup. anything to help boost your little kid's immune system. and remember, as horrible to us at it sounds, coughing is good. it means they are getting all the nasty stuff out of their system.
Vicks on the chest and heels of feet, a steam vaporizer with vicks liquid inside, popsicles will help with swelling in the throat.
This is a very old remedy, but I swear it works better than any meds. Vicks on the childs chest and feet with socks on.
Walmart carries Hyland's cough syrup. It is safe for kids 2+ and is 100% natural. The main ingredient is honey and works wonderfully.
Hi J.. I recommend Boiron Children's Homeopathic Cough Syrup with Honey. You can find this product at CVS or CVS.com. One of my friends went all homeopathic a couple of years ago and I scoffed. BUT then all the cold meds for little ones were taken off the shelves and I had to find something else to help my little girl feel better and so I too started trying homeopathic products. I won't tell you that all of them work - they don't. BUT this one does. It does have to be given every 2 hours, but it does work. There are other options as well, just have a look around because CVS offers other homeopathic products as well. :) Hope your little one feels better soon.
Good morning - i had this same ? Only w/my 3yr old who has a major gag issue, but... I tried this & it worked!!! You take a plastic spoon 1/2 lime juice, 1/2 honey, freeze it & let your 2 yr old have at it!!!! My son still thinks they are a treat & loves it!!! I hope this helps. It's soothing to the throat or so it seems.
Good luck!!!!****
Lots of honey baby!!! Store bought, not the unpasteurized stuff on the street that can harm them.....according to my ped. dr.
Also, there is a natural Asian cough syrup I use that works wonders for cough, throat issues and other respiratory problems. It's a herbal honey syrup and tastes ok to me.
It's called "Nim Jiom Pei Pa Koa" Tough, I know. But it works! You can find it at any Asian grocery store and possibly in some natural health food grocery stores. The direction are a bit extreme but we take 2-3 tsps throughout the day and drink a bit of warm water dirrectly afterwards. Good luck!
The FDA held a special panel in 2007 to discuss the use of Over the Counter cough and cold medications. Most products are not recommended in children under the age of 6 because of possible over-medication.
I would certainly recommend calling your pediatrician's office and asking a pharmacist for their advice because of the safety concerns - especially in a child the age of yours.
